Nice idea for an inexpensive beauty dish substitute. I was impressed by the endless series of facial expressions from Melissa. Those plus her hair were great contributions to the final result.

great shoot. I have a couple of umbrellas but never thought of combining them the way you showed in this video. Great idea. Now I have to go and try it out.

Hi Daniel. Just wanted to let you know that I took a self-portrait of myself using your custom beauty dish setup that you posted the other day. Getting a lot of compliments on the quality of the light. Great idea.

when I was starting in photography i just had both kinds of umbrellas and did the same set up several years ago. Thanks for the fond memories Daniel.

Excellent creative ingenuity Professor Norton. Using mostly beauty dishes, and softboxes in my studio and location work, I would never have thought of doing this with umbrellas. Thanks for this video!

I was playing around last summer with this concept but I used the White Lightings that have two umbrella shafts built into the light itself. It was fun but my one goal was to try a 60inch silver into my 72inch white shoot thru. But my room was too small and it was too windy out. I did just come up with an easy way to mount 4 Profoto B10's on one light stand for overpowering the sun outdoors on larger group pictures. Thanks for all your hard work on these fine videos.

Thanks Daniel and Marissa. It's nice to see a demo using equipment that those getting started in photography can afford own. Not everyone has the pro equipment like we have, but doing the same with a speedlite instead of a B1 would have been closer to what they would likely have when starting out. A shame that you didn't do the same shoot taking it one step further by using a speedlite with the umbrellas instead of the B1.

The Paul Buff White Lightning strobes come with two umbrella rod holes, and when I was shooting with them, I'd regularly do exactly what you did here. It was great. The only reason why I moved away from them was because I wanted lights that had LED modeling lights and built in radio triggers, otherwise, they were awesome lights for the money.

This is awesome and it complements Gavin Hoey's video on umbrellas. I will try this. I have the umbrellas. Here are the $64 questions: How did you fasten the second umbrella onto the first? What kind of fastener did you use to make it as secure as possible? Thanks for another awesome video!!!

Daniel (and Marissa) - late to this party, but as a new photographer (and just starting with strobes), I have a basic short, but multipart question. First, can you briefly explain why in this shot, for example, you started with "butterfly" lighting (looks like a bat to me) and then quickly migrated to "clam shell" with passive fill? Is this personal preference or is there an actual purpose or best use case scenario (and why?). Photography friends of mine (we are all amateurs) all tell me they are "waiting for the shadows" to be incorporated into my portrait shots, but as you demonstrate, they aren't always needed. Second, what technically makes a type of lighting "Beauty" vs. "Glamor" (i.e. How would you technically define them and best use case). Thanks in advance! Love the muppet!

Like that idea. Beat my homemade beauty dish made out of a large metal salad bowl and a 7” personal pizza pan attached together and a bowens mount it works but it’s heavy
