I remember loving this as a little girl. It was weird and visually interesting and I loved rollerskating, post-apocalyptic dystopian stuff and magic. The tape got 'lost' one day and I forgot about it until now.

Me too! I loved it so much, but I'm not sure if it was my Jason Patric/Jami Gertz obsession or my love of roller skating, but I remember wanting to write the novelization when I was about 12 because no one else had. Also, I knew the kid from his role in Witness because of my Harrison Ford obsession.

This is one of those movies that spent decades being one of those vaguely remembered things in my head, where I wasn't sure if it was a movie that I saw as a kid, or a distorted memory of a dream that I had at some point. I had pretty much accepted the latter until I accidentally came across a screenshot of the movie today, and the realization hit me like a lightning bolt. Such an amazing cathartic feeling.

Mel Brooks was on a podcast called "how did this get made" where he talked about the details surrounding this film. It's interesting how the thing snowballed and he (Mel Brooks) wound up putting in his own money to try to finish it and came close to losing his house. Brooks claims eventually this film was popular on cable and home video and eventually wound up making money for his company. Mel Brooks was hilarious, he was eager to tell this story and didn't seem to understand what a "podcast" was and kept calling referring to it as "your broadcast". Live forever, Mel

Solarbabies? No wonder I found this one again. I was 5 when it came out and saw it sometime when I was young. I kind of liked it from what I can remember, but this is super young me. For some reason I thought this movie was rollerball, only that turned out to have a completely different plot. Sometimes I think I've dreamed up some scenes, but slowly they are all turning out to be real things. And I can understand why I never came across this again when I was older.

    • @lucidexistance1

Oh my god!! The tire scene!! That's not something I recommend doing in real life. I found a tire I could fit into and tried doing that because of this movie! I don't think it worked. There weren't any hills where I grew up, but lots of old machinary and a junk pile that everyone close by used. That's where I discovered my first nudie magazines as a kid. It since has been cleaned up and turned into someone's trailer house now. But there was junk dating back to the 50's or further there. It kept growing when I was a younger and I wanted to see how big it would get in the future, but I'm okay with him being forced to remove the junk pile. It really wasn't that great and probably why there were so many bears around.

I wouldn't say "Love" but I do like this movie. And I know a good bit of that is nostalgia as I saw it as a kid. Rewatched it last night and man there's a lot of plot holes in the middle, or rather like kissing text from a book. Darstar steals bodhi, we never see the kids discover the missing orb, oh now Daniel's gone after bodhi. Et AL subsequent scenes for the next bit. Shit happens without any explanation.

Technically wrong. The BEST kind of wrong! And Allison's so damn funny it doesn't matter that she doesn't know the difference between roller blades and roller skates (or windsurfers and sailboats on Baywatching:-) I had no idea that Mel Brooks was involved in this movie but Allison did - and that's way more important and interesting! One might think that a film combining the post-apocalyptic water short world of Fury Road with the dystopian, ultra-violent sport centered world of Rollerball couldn't help but be fascinating... and one would apparently be wrong as Solarbabies shows.

I don’t know why but the 80’s had a fascination with the combination of post apocalyptic dystopian sci fi movies that incorporated roller blading. Prayer of the Rollerboys was another fantastic movie. I’m not sure how these two factors would occasionally find their way into movies but I was always excited for the genre and I feel it still has potential.
Maybe someone will create a new sci fi movie that takes place in a post apocalyptic setting but the world is like waterworld where all of the people wear some new kind of roller blades that work on water. This concept has potential. The characters could zoom around this waterworld as they attempt to salvage what’s left of this new world.
Growing up in the 80’s-90’s was such a unique time for movies and watching the evolution of technology.

Things that always bugged me about this movie even when I first saw it back in 1987-
    1. The desert wastelands have smooth enough surfaces to skate on.
    2. People aren't dropping dead of thirst left and right. The Solarbabies were out in the desert for a good two days without any water.
    3. A ragtag group of kids on rollerskates with wooden sticks can outrun, outsmart and beat an army of soldiers armed with laser rifles and armored vehicles.
    4. How the HELL did the Eco Protectorate take EVERY drop of water in the seas and oceans and fit them into those aqua bunkers?
    5. If they don't want anyone playing skateball in the outside arena, why keep it there?

Thank you!! I was positive that I saw this as a little kid but I could not remember it at all. Now I know why. THere's no real plot or story to remember. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

I think I was 1 of the people who actually saw this in the theatre. I thought it was awesome, granted, I was 6 or 7 years old at the time. That dull thudding sound you all heard that 1 time and never knew what it was, that was my jaw hitting the ground when I found out it cost $20 Million dollars to make. Still, I actually bought the movie on DVD after seeing your review, I managed to watch it. Yes, it's a silly movie that is so saccharine it makes my teeth hurt, but it somehow gives me some strange reassurance that the world we live in now has some hope. Maybe it's just the nostalgia of sitting next to my mom and dad in the theatre watching this as a kid, but still, it's better than having to watch Kanye West blab on about how great he is. I'd gladly live in the world of Solar babies if it meant I didn't have to suffer through the Cult of Kanye. So thanks for reminding me about this little crappy movie, it actually made me smile instead of praying for an asteroid strike to wipe us all out before we end up killing the planet.

All I remember is the ants eating the hand scene. As an 8 year old, it freaked me out and I could never finish watching it. Or maybe I was just bored out of my mind.

Oh, have you ever seen "Rollerball"? Made a decade earlier, I do wonder if it was a possible influence for Solarbabies, a name I keep mixing up with "Muppet Babies" as I grew up with that back then...

They cut a scene out at the end of the film when it rained and the gang goes swimming.
The uncut scene was everyone happily swimming and on the shore the kids clothes were piled up
hinting all are au natural. That cut scene was innocent enough but it was taken out - why? ones guess is as good
    as anyone.

And monster hair! Heck, the only thing the 1980s never did was inspire a horror flick called "Monster Hair versus The Colossal Shoulderpads of Dooooooom". The hair would win. Because... hairspray toxic stench.

Has anyone recommended “Blood of Heroes” for a Movie Nights review? It’s another entry in the “Post-apocalyptic society makes no goddamn sense, oh yeah, and sports!” Category.
