My father described my grandfathers Scott as having access doors at either end of the crankcase which allowed access to the big ends. The cranks were pins coming out from one side. I'm know motorcycle engines but my father was less knowledgeable. Does this description of the Scott sound right I'd like to know?

Yes that is about right, look at some of our other videos on engine stripdown and crank rebuilds, you'll see what it looks like inside.
