Finished this game last month, I was seriously blown away! Panic Button deserves some kind of award for what they've been able to do here. I played the whole thing in portable mode, and the only issue I had was a forest section that was incredibly blurry. The Nintendo Switch isn't perfect by any means, but it is a huge leap for portable gaming.
Seeing current gen games running on Switch, largely unchanged visually other than slight blurriness which is counteracted by the portable screen size, makes these advanced games seem somehow vastly more impressive when running on Switch. There's some sort of weird preference to play these games on a console like Switch whilst appreciating every pixel, rather than running the game on hardware with seemingly limitless performance.
"*slight* bluriness" Tbh from what I saw the game looks borderline unplayable, there is no way in hell I would play a game that runs at 640p most of the time.
Idtech5 can run much better, while looking good. Seriousle, 360p in portable mode and still dropping to 30fps? Unbelievable. 360p locked at 30 would be just ok. In Docked mode, it's unusual to go below 720p, since at that resolution. you have 1 imput pixel for every 9 pixels of a modern TV, and they didn't even stay above that minimum. Idtech5 and UE3 are the best for the Switch. This game is an interesting experiment to look at, nothing more.
SalveMonesvol If you've played Wolfenstein The New Order and Doom 2016 on the same PC you'd have noticed how much better Doom runs while looking much better. The extremely low resolution in that game isn't due to the engine, it's due to the choices the developers of the port made when converting the game to the Switch, whereby they decided to keep as much of the visuals as possible and compensate by lowering the rendering resolution.
Panic Button did a great job as always with Switch ports. Everytime i think how weaker a Switch is, it's harder to understand the magic behind these ports (especially how they can keep the overall visual style and geometry).
Agreed. On a pure graphical standpoint: besides the blurry visuals, what's underneath looks pretty damn fantastic. I'd even use the word 'gorgeous'. And I'm happy they kept all of the graphical design decisions in this port (per-object motion blur, volumetric lighting etc.).
They never did a great job on switch ports. All 3 of rocket league, doom and wolfenstein 2 aren't well optimized and even subutilized the docked power, proven by the performance increase from simple patches. Their ports are solid but that's it.
I still prefer the visual style in New order, even though technically this game is better. It just feels too high tech and dark. New order felt like a period piece.

Yeah, same here lol. All I’m seeing is “360P 30FPS SUCK IT NINTENDRONES” and I’m wondering if they even understood anything else in the video except those words. I come to DF’s analyses to have more insight on visual effects and how studios work with them on various consoles. It seems like 90% of everyone else just comes here to have flame wars. I just like broadening my knowledge of the technical aspects of graphics.
I'm just here for the port report, really, and Digital Foundry is the place to go for that kinda thing. While I find the FPS to be the most important part, it's also nice to know if and when there are alterations between the graphical fidelity of the consoles. That said, the classic Wolfenstein being slowed down is probably the worst part of this port. I'll wait for a fix before I even consider getting this game.
Yep, why can’t we just enjoy how this is running on a tablet, and hope that the future brings new great portable consoles with even better power? I hate how people have to protect and hate brands, I just want more places to play games, so that’s why I bought the Switch. I want the Switch to be a success so that more powerful handhelds follow.
The Average Ordinary Exactly. I think this stands more as a testament to how far portable hardware has come. People like to complain that the switch is closer to a 360 than a base Xbox ONE, disregarding how amazing it is to have a handheld that can out pace the last gen home consoles.
Well, technically it is. I don't understand why people are so salty about this game. If you don't like the low resolutions and framerates, then don't play it lol.
It wasnt too long ago that we used to be more then satisfied with 480i/p thru s video and 720p and 1080hp thru hdmi....now we want 4k on our damn portables? I think most people who dislike the switch version due to the graphics are kind of missing the point of bringing this game to the switch......to me the minor graphic differences dont matter and they dont make the game any less playable.....its a fair trade off, for having new or recently released AAA multiplatform titles on a portable device like the switch... Really it aint no different then pc gaming, where not every pc gamer can run games at max settings, therfore being able to run games at lower graphic settings has always been an important staple of pc gaming, since lower settings would account for the majority of customers.....also theres something special about playing such a hardware demanding game on a lower spec system and seeing that system hold its own against much more powerful systems.
Agreed, as a pc gamer who usually plays games in mid to low graphics, i really don't mind the reduction in quality here. In fact, I'm just quite impressed at this small device that can play AAA games. Not replacements of the game on an Android or iOS device, just the actual game itself on an actual powerful portable device. I can say just ignore the people who are hating on this, they clearly don't know the struggle of playing games on lower graphical settings.
Actually a decade ago when crisis is the top tier gaming experience most people dont even know about max settings in gaming as long as it looks decent enough thats acceptable. But now gamers are more A$$ about framerate and resolution.. There are no other console like switch today wherein you can play Triple A titles on the go and people keep shitting about it for no good reason.. If they dont want the reducwd resolution then just pass by and continue playing on your ps4.
People have to remember that this is essentially a portable console. Before this the most powerful portable console on the market was the vita. Now we have a portable capable of playing games like this. This is a fantastic port and switch is slowly becoming more of a must buy in the gaming industry.
@@SunnyShuklathedoctor That's a stupid argument. You could basically say that for every console "PS4 and Xbox run GTA V at 30 fps ew ew ew on what is essentially a glorified PC"
I think that's possible too. After they released Doom, panic button found a lot of ways the improve the frame rate and resolution with the main patch that bring gyro too. I think they will release some patch soon with improvements.
Wolfenstein 2 is a blast on Switch! I played in hand held the other night and sure it was muddy but what a load of fun!! Nothing that’s said in this video takes away from the fun and it’s Wolf 2 on the go 😁
Chiriac Puiu Only "true gamers" know this game. Please, Wolfenstein has been around for quite a while. Being a gamer really isnt that rare of a thing nowadays anyways, no need for unnecessary elitism.
Chiriac Puiu You can do that with almost any game bro. You're asking someone who doesn't keep up with video games about video games, what do you expect? I can name games you don't keep up with and you don't see me calling myself some hardcore gamer. If you think casuals only play the popular games then you clearly don't know many casuals. Even my uncle plays your so called "hardcore" games and he mainly plays COD, Fortnite, and sports games... Wolfenstein isn't some huge series known by even people who don't play video games but obscurity doesn't make a game some hardcore elitist game.
People shouldn't forget that the Switch is a 7W tablet. I think you can fit 6 switch into one PS4 slim with ease and even more in the original PS4 or Xbox one.
Very impressive, it reminded me of the Call of Duty ports for the Wii, even tho they suffered from really poor performance sometimes, the effort put in those ports were astonishing.
What is considered toxic waste? The fact this game looks really bad on the Switch? I'm a hardcore Nintendo fan but im not blind. This version looks a lot worse than the xbox1/ps4 versions.
issaciams what in the world did you expect?? Every hardcore nintendo fan would know that this game would not come close to looking as good as the way more powerful ps4 and Xbox one. I find it pretty ignorant to always compere the switch with the ps4, Xbox one, pc, as the switch main focus is ‘portabillity’ and not as a home console.
If you do not watch DF's video on all the differences between Switch version and the Other versions on more powerful hardware, going from xbox one x to Switch, what will stand out the most is the frame rate. I was blown away when I saw this running on a switch. Looked the same, played the same, I could not feel any of the shortcomings here stated. Kudos to Panic Button. Of course, the purpose of DF videos is not to put down the version of the less powerful hardware, but to point out what the developer did to "shrink" the game to Switch. This is marvelous. Playing this portably is outstanding. I hope that more recent high budget games are ported to Switch. The machine can handle it, but it takes creative coding from the developers to port it right.
Smartphones are getting really good with battery life thanks to power efficient yet still powerful chipsets (especially on mid-range phones) but Switch's 20nm Tegra X1 is not the best when it comes to power efficiency.
Consider the hardware that is at hand. Nobody is saying that this is the best version of the game. It's far from it. But if this proves to be your only option to play, this is in no way a slouch.
@@pegasusdrive12 Personally I'd rather play a razor-sharp port of Return to Castle Wolfenstein than a port of a game that is so blurry (even on a TV) that you can't make out most of the details anyway. They should have at least included the option to disable TXAA so you could have perceptible texture detail etc. at the cost of jaggies.
Wow, really impressive work both by Panic Button and John. It's great to see such effort and expertise put into a port, and it's great that we have such a deep analysis of this so we can appreciate the work. Thanks!
This is mighty impressive. The blurriness might put a bit of a damper on the experience, but these compromises don't seem that bad all things considered. It's amazing, hopefully this will result in more AAA releases on the Switch :)
I'm just gonna go out and say it: this is *very* impressive. This is a current gen game, on a current gen engine, ported to a mobile device (let's face it, the Switch *is* a mobile device) and its very playable and maintains its artstyle and atmosphere fairly well. The slomo version of Wolf 1 in-game is probably an oversight. That game works in the way of framerate = game speed. I'd not get a Switch for games like this... I've got an old gaming PC for that and it does a way better job, but it's still impressive none the less and I know people who now have access to titles like DOOM and Wolf II thanks to this little machine. It's quite impressive imho.
The amount of people commenting about the resolution .... Just be amazed at how well a tablet is running this game lol (emphasis on the word "well" not perfect)
ADITYA SRINIVASAN Look, I love the Switch as much as the next guy, but sometimes the achievement of getting a game to work on a device doesn't justify a pricy retail release. You could port Red Dead Redemption 2 to the switch at 144p 23fps and that would be an achievement, but not worth existing as a product.
jvalex18 they don't have controls since they are not built for gaming Nintendo took the huge risk / step and it paid off and now apple / google or any other company doing it won't make sense since they aren't built for gaming and Nintendo already created this wave / hype around . but what the point is , is that there could have been a better device if any other company thought of this but they didn't.
jvalex18 whether they could have or not we will never know since they won't do it at least not till the switch dies out. Nintendo is just redefining the portable gaming scene in today's world no one would have believed hell even a year ago that a handheld console could be running fortnite doom LA Noire and now wolfenstein 2 albeit not obviously outstandingly but still. They took a risk and its paying them dividends through the sales and through the devs whom believe in the console and that's all Nintendo wants. and for the millions of people out there who just want to play games on the go this is a perfect option
I remember when Razer came out with a windows tablet called Razer edge. It had an Nvidia 600 series mobile gpu and 4 or 8 gb of ram and it impressed me alot as you could play pc games on the go. It wasn't great and wouldn't have been able to play games like doom and wolfenstein and this is the reason the switch blows me away playing all these fullblown games. Credits to panic button.
Now I'm really curious what that big game announcement Panic Button was teasing about. They're masters at porting. Rocket League, Doom, Wolf 2 etc are all amazingly well done.
See when I was a young teen I had a PC that could just barely run half life and CS, I mean I'd have to run them on low settings and 640x480 on a CRT, before AA, but hey, it ran and I enjoyed the hell out of it, So when resolution comes into things I don't really care, especially when its while using it portable, I mean, the screen is small enough for it to not matter too much, the real thing that seems to make these feel so much more alive than older games seems to be animations and lighting, and for that honestly, I find stuff like this staggeringly good
People need to stop hearing "It once dropped to 360p when the action got really packed" and now think that's how the game works? It stays 720 and only drops when there's alot on screen moving.
Not on portable, it stays at 360p most of the time. I’m still very impressed by it though, but I do think they probably should’ve scaled back other features, reduced the TAA, or optimised the engine further to achieve a higher resolution. It’s just too blurry.
That's crazy-impressive for what it is. I mean, I've got a powerhouse PC and don't need to play this game on a Switch, but I'd be grateful to have the option, and I love what it says about the future of the Switch.
I gotta say I really appreciate your perfect comparisons between the consoles. The same exact moments in the game being shown on both consoles, with the same walking speed and direction. It was an awesome attention to detail that I really loved. 10/10 comparison. I love you. Marry me.
Holy crap! I knew that PanicButton! did a good job, but MAN! I am now hyped to get this for my Switch. I loved the first Wolfenstein, and now that I don't have my gaming PC anymore, I am very happy to hear that Wolf 2 on the Switch is still the full experience. Panic Button deserve high praise for their fantastic work in what was clearly a labor of love and a high standard of quality and professionalism. Digital Foundry, thank you for making this video, to put my worries to rest about purchasing this port; and PanicButton!, if you're reading this, you have my utmost respect for the hard work y'all poured into this game. Well done.
9:24 - Switch image looks like somebody with a bad prescription for their glasses/somebody who forgot their glasses and he says detracts "slightly" from the presentation, lol.
Portability is good, but for 2 hours batteries life and blurry mess and slow frame rates , will not even worth to play on the go, especially FPS games like this. Then you put on the dock mode that still sub-par to it's counter part PS4 and Xbox One with is great on the large screens. Switch are great on playing adventure, RPG or action adventure games like Zelda and Mario, for the rest genre play it on PC, PS4 or Xbox.
I started to prefer mobilty when psp came out in 2006 and enjoy playing shooters and hack n slash on portables. I still enjoy vita but I do plan on getting a ps4 soon since sony isn't making another portable anytime soon
Awesome game. Very impressive that it runs and looks as good as it does on the Switch. The price is still $60. That's far too expensive for a game that they are too cheap to fit onto a cartridge. The most I'll pay for it is $20. Then we have the Witcher 3 coming with the full game on the cartridge. That's a publisher that has always respected it's customers.
Gonna be honest here: Doom 2016 on Switch was an amazing tech feat. This is even more impressive as Id Tech 6 got slight tweaks since Doom. Now I wonder how Eternal will run on the switch
The GBA version of Doom II used that same trick, actually. The levels are mostly intact (With just two of them cut in half) but there are tweaks to them to reduce visibility. For instance, in the Crusher level, a big pillar is added to the large crusher room tor reduce visibility.
It looks as good as the hardware can allow but being 60$ at launch when you can currently get the other superior versions for a fraction of the price is going to hurt sales. Seriously why was this 60$?
Damn, this port is just a little too blurry to me. I don't know why they didn't reduce the geometry of the stages instead on a small screen it wouldn't look so bad.
I think the switch is marketed as a console you can take on the go mostly because they didn't want to scare third party support away if they said its a handheld you can connect to your tv. IMO its a handheld you can connect to your tv. Coming from the WiiU its not that big of a leap(unless you count third party support lol) but if you had a 3DS and now have a switch I would say its a pretty big leap in graphics. For a handheld I think this port is a good one
THIS is how you port a game to Switch! Panic Button deserves more recognition for their work. They crammed a super advanced current gen game onto a little tablet, and made it work! ...unlike some ports (cough WWE 2K18 cough)
Erebus Yeah, I'm hoping they can do at least something about it or when the inevitable switch revision comes out. Like the New 3DS runs 3DS games better it'll hopefully not only run them better but make them look better too but I'm probably asking for too much out of handheld gaming.
DarkShadix beautiful thing is, if Nintendo does a Switch Pro with a Tegra X2, this and Doom and Mario will all look better by default. Because their dynamic resolution scaler will be less active. We've seen this on the Xbox One X with games with dynamic res. Performance could stabalize as well.
Nuvendil The tegra X2 wouldn't make that big of a difference tbh, the best we'd get is a more consistent 30fps. It's not made for gaming anyway. They'd need a custom chip imo because the tegra X2 would bring up the price with practically no improvement.
DarkShadix after all the money Nvidia has been making partnering with Nintendo I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a custom chip being designed for an upgraded switch.
This reminds me of an idea I've had for a while; I want to see a dev do a game that looks sort of like a VHS tape, with really low resolution and terrible image quality, but where that leaves you TONS of room to just crank the lighting and detail up to eleven. You could, in theory, make a photo real game with that approach, it would just look like a VHS tape. Could be cool for an artsy walking simulator or something.
I noticed another big geometry change similar to the wall earlier in the video. In the background of the water segment, the brick building towards the rear has been given a second story.
Honestly everyone whos bitching about it being 360p at times, I really couldn't care less. I can play this version of the game whilst sitting in bed, and that makes it the best.
Perhaps I missed it, but what about the audio? I seem to recall that Doom suffered a loss in fidelity with the conversion, I am quite curious about Wolf 2 especially in terms of surround sound.
Nice video John. As always. I think you should compare kill zone mercenary on Vita, Doom on switch Vs Wolfenstein on switch. It'll be interesting to see how things progressed in the portable console space. I love hardware pushing software, just like you, and these 3 are definitely powerhouse titles on their respective hardware.
What'll be interesting to see is what will happen with these games 5 years from now when Nintendo's next console comes out. If it's a Switch successor and is backwards compatible then many games like this might scale up quite nicely since they're running a dynamic resolution.
It is absolutely phenomenal what they managed to get out of such a small and low power chip. Fundamentally the same game is running here on a 7 watt handheld as i run with my 300~ Watt Desktop
I'm "Nearsighted" person, I don't see well without glasses, this version of the game looks like my vision without glasses. Maybe Switch Nearsighted too? :)
What I have learned: Panic Button have apparently mastered porting to the switch and should received recognition for a seriously good jobs.
They are the masters of this work
I honestly hope they make their own game.

DaemonDD yup, comments are filled with a bunch of cancerous fucktards.
The Average Ordinary Exactly. I think this stands more as a testament to how far portable hardware has come. People like to complain that the switch is closer to a 360 than a base Xbox ONE, disregarding how amazing it is to have a handheld that can out pace the last gen home consoles.
Very impressed, Panic Button are truly miracle workers!
PikaPlayzHD Yay running at 360p is really a miracle
Sam T it rarely hits thou low more so upper 600s and 700s. You tried it
Arnez Juggins bc 600-700 is better lol
Well, technically it is. I don't understand why people are so salty about this game. If you don't like the low resolutions and framerates, then don't play it lol.
Francis B. Because if you accept low quality nothing will change
Tyranniod Nintendo switch is shit because it doesn't have black ops IIII
(Sarcasm)
Let me add to this.
the switch is shit because it can run wolfenstein II in 30FPS EW EW EW in what essentially is a glorified Android tablet LOL!
@@SunnyShuklathedoctor That's a stupid argument. You could basically say that for every console "PS4 and Xbox run GTA V at 30 fps ew ew ew on what is essentially a glorified PC"
@@maxijunger I think he was being sarcastic.

I bet there will eventually be a few patches just like Doom had which might make the frame rate and resolution higher.
Supermarioclayton EX doubt it
Great to buy a game at day one and wait for patches

I think that's possible too. After they released Doom, panic button found a lot of ways the improve the frame rate and resolution with the main patch that bring gyro too.
I think they will release some patch soon with improvements.
switch version looks like video under youtube processing hell
PsyGnosiS I had to double check what resolution the video plays at because it was soooo blurry. (It was 1080p60)
Wolfenstein 2 is a blast on Switch! I played in hand held the other night and sure it was muddy but what a load of fun!! Nothing that’s said in this video takes away from the fun and it’s Wolf 2 on the go 😁
Chiriac Puiu didn't know you spoke for me, thanks.
Chiriac Puiu well it might be true because the casual gamer wouldn't care about small shit like that and only plays the game for fun not graphics
Exactly!! well put 😎
Nintendo Switch is a powerhouse for its size!
Amazing. I will be buying this game soon, love games that push hardware to its limits.
stabinghobo57 360p is lower than Wii, this is kinda emberrasing.
People shouldn't forget that the Switch is a 7W tablet. I think you can fit 6 switch into one PS4 slim with ease and even more in the original PS4 or Xbox one.
The Rebel the handheld is 720p and tv is 1080p
The Rebel I really hope you're joking

Very impressive, it reminded me of the Call of Duty ports for the Wii, even tho they suffered from really poor performance sometimes, the effort put in those ports were astonishing.

DF knew I was up all night watching DF videos, so they gave me one more for the night. thanks guys! :D
Beware of a huge amount of toxic waste in the comments below. You have been warned
A warning is not needed, comments on any website is full of toxic waste
DF takes the cake though
You might as well just create a bot to post this comment on every DF video
Panic button have done a great job. This is the last game I would expect to run on Switch. Hopefully a Fallout 4 port is possible in the near future.
@UnjustifiedRecs i would have preferred a 3 or new Vegas port, I don't even enjoy FO4 at all and a blurry mess would have made me "enjoy" it less
I wish we manage to get a better battery technology, I want more and better portable device with good battery life >.
Smartphones are getting really good with battery life thanks to power efficient yet still powerful chipsets (especially on mid-range phones) but Switch's 20nm Tegra X1 is not the best when it comes to power efficiency.
にゃあエイリアンMeowAlien that's probably the only reason preventing companies from going full mobile
Just buy a small 5000MAH portable charger and a cable.
Smartphones ? Just play some damanding 3D game and the battery wil be eaten in an hour.
Just get a anker portable charger, it’ll make it last longer
Astounding work by the devs. Crazy to see this game running on the Switch.
Actually, I think Panic Button forgot to give BJ his glasses which explains why its blurry lol
You could say that Nazi-killing is a contact sport.
Thanks!
These comments make it easy to tell the difference in generations between gamers.. lol
Give me wizard of wor - the c64 version anyday on the switch. :P yes I am old
What if you're a kid, but you understand that's it's a freaking tablet, and simply being able to start the game is amazing?
@@snake4322 I second this
20s here and I think the Switch is crazy with what they've managed to do by bringing a modern console we can carry
I'll be 21 next month and I can appreciate how amazing these ports are, despite being a hardcore PC gamer. I love the Switch.
This is mighty impressive. The blurriness might put a bit of a damper on the experience, but these compromises don't seem that bad all things considered. It's amazing, hopefully this will result in more AAA releases on the Switch :)
Disable the motion blur, chromatic aberration, depth of field and I'm pretty sure the game will be at the very least a 480p game.
Along with that, I don't want any screenshots or 30sec video recordings. Disabling it altogether would free up the CPU greatly.
True, that should free up some of the processing to focus on resolution, I believe that was the case with Doom.
Idiot.
Doc4EVR doom always had the option, wolfenstein doesn't unfortunately.
Yeah i don't like motion blur at all, makes the game so dizzy feeling.
this is really insane that you can play game looking like that in a bus on your way home
people would probably think you’re a nerd if you play a switch in public though
Daniel McNeary why would you put stocks in some random stranger you won't ever see again and won't affect your life in any capacity think about you?
What an astounding technical accomplishment. Major props to the dev team.
Phillip Scott Oh, excuse me Mr expert. I was naive thinking the quality of a product was more important than it being a technical achievement.
Hansel Thepedo I know but companies won't try making a port for tablets but since its Nintendo they will
jvalex18 they don't have controls since they are not built for gaming Nintendo took the huge risk / step and it paid off and now apple / google or any other company doing it won't make sense since they aren't built for gaming and Nintendo already created this wave / hype around . but what the point is , is that there could have been a better device if any other company thought of this but they didn't.
jvalex18 whether they could have or not we will never know since they won't do it at least not till the switch dies out.
I think I'll end up buying a Switch sooner than I thought
Anon 4ever it says is very rare 360p, so don't spread disinformation
Anon 4ever why do you care about what he does?
If you live in Canada, the Switch just got a price cut.
being able to play online games in the car, restaurants, shitter is what makes it 2018 and beyond. Can you do that on a PC, X or PS4?
Get it. Mario Odyssey and Splatoon 2 alone are worth buying the system for.
They patched Wolfenstein 3d to run much better. So it's a fully playable portable version.
Please do a follow up video with the 1.2 Patch update!
DRAGON BALL FIGHTERZ HYPE! WOOT WOOT!
ImmaZarbon Yeah! This guy gets it! Positivity!
ImmaZarbon hopfully there's joy cons with a real dpad
My hope, wireless dpad joycons
DBF on switch is going to ruin my life.
Hori's actually making a dpad variant for the left joycon but idk how ideal it will be given the placement.
Now I'm really curious what that big game announcement Panic Button was teasing about. They're masters at porting. Rocket League, Doom, Wolf 2 etc are all amazingly well done.
See when I was a young teen I had a PC that could just barely run half life and CS, I mean I'd have to run them on low settings and 640x480 on a CRT, before AA, but hey, it ran and I enjoyed the hell out of it,
So when resolution comes into things I don't really care, especially when its while using it portable, I mean, the screen is small enough for it to not matter too much, the real thing that seems to make these feel so much more alive than older games seems to be animations and lighting, and for that honestly, I find stuff like this staggeringly good
Happy 2 year anniversary. Love the channel.

Milkshake Nazi:
Wow
I am genuinely impressed at how well it came i out to be
Update 1.2 actually looks as though it improves the game
Panic Button should have done the Outer Worlds port...
Great analysis. Don't have a Switch but it's still entertaining to see all the engine tricks that go into these versions.
What a great port, I don't own a switch but can appreciate a job well done! :)
Gonna buy it just to support the devs' incredible work.
I bought 8 copies
I named my first child "panic button"
@@decentlyaverage9483 I never bought this lol

That's crazy-impressive for what it is. I mean, I've got a powerhouse PC and don't need to play this game on a Switch, but I'd be grateful to have the option, and I love what it says about the future of the Switch.
I gotta say I really appreciate your perfect comparisons between the consoles. The same exact moments in the game being shown on both consoles, with the same walking speed and direction. It was an awesome attention to detail that I really loved. 10/10 comparison. I love you. Marry me.
Great work as always Jon, eagerly anticipating the return of glorious DF Retro.
The game looks like motion blur is on every frame lol
I'm willing to bet that they'll update it and hopefully the resolution increases. I mean Doom got a ton of those. Let's just hope
Please cover the new patch for Wolfenstein two!
What do you think now about eternal ?
@@tomianz-1242 Insane wizardry
The GBA version of Doom II used that same trick, actually. The levels are mostly intact (With just two of them cut in half) but there are tweaks to them to reduce visibility. For instance, in the Crusher level, a big pillar is added to the large crusher room tor reduce visibility.
A new patch came out not too long ago for Wolf 2. You guys should check it out.
Patch 1.2 Analysis pls! The game looks even more amazing with it!👍🏻
That's smart. Since the switch is a mainly a handheld console resolution doesn't matter on such a small screen. I might pick this game up.
I am not a FPS kinda guy, but this makes me want to support the devs and get the game because of the impressive work they did.
It looks as good as the hardware can allow but being 60$ at launch when you can currently get the other superior versions for a fraction of the price is going to hurt sales. Seriously why was this 60$?
Panic button have proved themselves, esspecially after doom eternal. I hope these guys stay porting all id's games, and machine games too obviously.
Damn, this port is just a little too blurry to me. I don't know why they didn't reduce the geometry of the stages instead on a small screen it wouldn't look so bad.
Please make an Update including the new Patch from 2 days ago!
Great, well-researched video for an incredible port. Thank you!
I’m all for more games like this on the switch and they’ve done an excellent job that’s for sure but it’s too blurry for me personally.
That is a fantastic point. I had not thought of that at all...
Could be cool for an artsy walking simulator or something.
make it a game ! COME ON!
Daniel King
Problem here is that even at these lower than SD (640x480) resolutions Switch is maxing out as far as graphics are concerned.
I'm talking more about PC's and the more capable consoles, though I see why it sounds like I'm talking about the Switch.
Once we get a Switch Pro with Tegra X2 or the newer Xavier chips, this thing will fly off shelves even faster.
I noticed another big geometry change similar to the wall earlier in the video. In the background of the water segment, the brick building towards the rear has been given a second story.
This is quite hilarious you are buying a game on a cardridge and have to download the rest of it.... 😁
yeah it's almost like it's a cost saving and space saving measure lol
Patch analysis would be amazing!
Honestly everyone whos bitching about it being 360p at times, I really couldn't care less. I can play this version of the game whilst sitting in bed, and that makes it the best.

Switch version has motion control by the way, the most important feature to note of, and should have proper HD Rumble support.
Great review!
I own the game and no lie, the game looks and plays incredibly well on the Switch in both modes.
I play on a 65' HDTV when docked btw.
I watched this on a phone screen and still found it too blurry to be playable in many scenes. Weird because I still play Wii and Dreamcast games...
Is the switch more powerful than the 360 and ps3?
Well duh......
Of course man
RockingOrange nope it's not, only Nintendo fans said that 😂
Deus Knight just curious
James Keith Tampus it's definitely more powerful. Faster processor, better gpu and more RAM.
>360p in 2018
Perhaps I missed it, but what about the audio? I seem to recall that Doom suffered a loss in fidelity with the conversion, I am quite curious about Wolf 2 especially in terms of surround sound.
Nice video John. As always. I think you should compare kill zone mercenary on Vita, Doom on switch Vs Wolfenstein on switch. It'll be interesting to see how things progressed in the portable console space. I love hardware pushing software, just like you, and these 3 are definitely powerhouse titles on their respective hardware.
I would have been glad to buy the game for Switch but not having the full game on the cart is a no buy for me, sorry Bethesda.
Yeah, deal breaker for me too, Switch is actually forcing everyone to go fully digital but I don't like it.
What'll be interesting to see is what will happen with these games 5 years from now when Nintendo's next console comes out. If it's a Switch successor and is backwards compatible then many games like this might scale up quite nicely since they're running a dynamic resolution.
Patch 1.2 makes things even better...
It is absolutely phenomenal what they managed to get out of such a small and low power chip. Fundamentally the same game is running here on a 7 watt handheld as i run with my 300~ Watt Desktop
I'm "Nearsighted" person, I don't see well without glasses,
this version of the game looks like my vision without glasses.
Maybe Switch Nearsighted too? :)
