I rechecked all the shafts, props and gears last night just to double check. All completely str8. I never thought to check the bottom cam. I'll check when I get home. I pray that's all it is cuz changing motors is not something I'm looking forward too. If it still does it, I'll start changing out the motors. Thanks for your time Kyle!!! Keep thoughs videos coming!!! They are my AR. Drone bible.
Daren - episode 28 uses balanced and straightened props along with a few other mods with before and after. It mostly focuses on the extended flight time aspect, but you can also see how much easier it stays centered, with less wobbling and wandering.
The "carbon vinyl" props sold by AR Drone Shop USA are nothing more than stock Parrot props covered with black vinyl tape which has a carbon-looking graphic on top. Nothing more nothing less. The tape adds weight but absolutely no stiffness. I tried them, a piece of the tape broke off, and I just stripped the rest off all four, and was left with an expensive set of Parrots. Thank you for the tip on what is in development.
Thanks!! I will make sure to use as little tape as possible. I crashed my AR.Drone and broke the first part today...was trying to fly solely via FPV, and the quad went into angle emergency and crashed. It bent a prop shaft. I ordered new shafts and gears, and got some new props while I was at it. I figure the new props will get straightened (from your video) and then balanced so that I can have them working at their best.
check your settings on your phone and make sure the hull setting (indoor or outdoor) is matching whats fitted on the drone. This lets it know what weight and therefore power to lift the drone
Well taking material OFF is better for responsiveness and battery savings (no matter how little it probably is) and not to mention less string on the motor. I use an exacto knife and sandpaper to ballance my blades.
Have you ever thought about making an outdoor hull that resembles the indoor hull but real thin and light? Ive thought about maybe putting zip ties together to create a thin barrier for the propellers...but I haven't gotten around to it:/
sounds like , if you just touch the tape too an area where the balance might be , you can leave a little bit up too pull off , if you need too go out , or in with the piece of tape , not use 2 or so too get balance ... need more tape , put the little piece further out , need less balance move the little piece back too the center ... { just a thought ... thanks for the video }
Gimpdiggity - it's best to use the least amount of tape as possible for the lightest possible prop. It's better to remove tape from the now-heavier side. And also the farthest to the tip as possible, like a see-saw. So in the end you should have one small piece of tape on the tip of one side of each prop. Btw I caught your video on removing hull stickers, that was good work.
Yeah if someone out there knows of any third-party upgrades props in the works let us know. I spent 2009-11 in China and still have contacts over there, I'm tempted to send then some stock props for a mold and have them use a stronger plastic. Any out there have suggestions for what a good recipe for a strong prop recipe could include?
So swap motors straight across (the ones in the front by the camera... Swap them together, then the ones in the back swap them together) from right to left and left to right? Won't the propellers spin the wrong way?
1st of all. i love this yt channel. music and presentation also. my question is what would make a drone drift to the right? clean it underneath? inbalance props?
Thanks RLS :) Well it could be a number of things. Try wiping off the bottom cam in case it's smudged. Balance the props. Rotate each prop with your finger, see if one gives more resistance than the others -- if one does take that foot apart and check for damaged parts. Maybe use some bearing oil
Cheers mate :) I'll look into yur episodes to see I can stop it drifting. I want it to act like yur drone in this video. U have that bearing episode, I'll look at that one. And I'll get a couple of wood rulers and a blow dryer
***** make sure your bottom camera is working properly and has a clear image. the bottom camera is used much like an optical mouse to sense movement and help stabilize the drone. You'll get a low vision alert and your drone will drift if you flight it in low light conditions.
Kyle. Are you finding the replacement props being sold need to be curved and straightened still? Or has that packaging issue been solved? Just balanced my stock props thanks to this video.
Ok, I swapped the motors across left to right and right to left. Still checked the ultra flight gears, stock props, ultraflight pinion and stock shafts, all brand new and perfect. I also checked the bottom camera and cleaned it again. (During this test i placed a launch pad symbol on the ground so the drone can focus on it and stay in one spot instead of drifting left.) I did the front motor swap first and it still went slowly to the left (camera facing me) so then I switched the back motors and when I tested it, it still went slowly to the left. It tried harder to stay in that spot because of the launch symbol on the ground but eventually it went to the left. So I guess it is the navi. What do u suggest? New navi?
Kyle, I just ordered the tape and glue from you on Ebay. I've never balanced a prop before. If you get it to the point where you've put too much weight on the side that was lighter, is it best to add another piece to the other side, or take a piece off of the side you were putting it on and go with a smaller piece?
Kyle: The Parrot stock propellers are too soft & flimsy, so I bought those “high performance” ones on EBay from AR Drone Shop USA. Marginally stiffer and flight was crisp, but they shatter on the slightest impact. Should have asked you first. Despite their disclaimers on EBay, this shop is absolutely responsible for the quality of product they market, but we still have no choices here. Somebody needs to come up with good hard plastic or carbon propellers. Any thoughts?
i have an ar.drone and it loses balance and then it flips upside down and crashes. i tried replacing all the propellers, shafts and cog wheel's, but nothing helped. do you think this solution will help?
So i tried this, but for some reason, I don't get the prop to spin on the pin very well, not as smooth as the way your showing. Assistance please!?

Hey Kyle, great show. I have a problem, I have straiten and balanced the propellers, however now when the drone take off it goes to the right, The order of the propellers is correct (I have double check that). What else can I check? Thanks
Well if you're flying an ARD2 you definitely want 2.0 motors, but if you're flying a 1.0 drone you can use either. The 2.0 motors are slightly better and the nylon pinion that comes on them is better than the heavier metal pinion on the 1.0 motor. Also because they stopped making them 1.0 motors are kind of expensive now, so if you need more than one new motor for an ARD1 you might as well get 4 2.0 motors for $109, since that's about what two 1.0 motors cost nowadays.
Hi Kyle, what tape do you use to balance the propellers and where do you get it? I used regular electrical tape but I am not sure how long that will last.
No it is brand new just opened on Wednesday I flew it again today and it was okay except at one point it started going in random directions but everything else may have been because my phone was controlling it It works way better with our iPad would that have been the problem?
Hmm could be an issue with wifi interference. You might try downloading another AR Drone app and control it with that one, see if it's doing the same thing. If it is that rules out firmware issues, and means it's maybe mechanical.
@ tcooper505. The "high performance" VGE props aren't used by many. You have experienced why. The stock Parrot props are perfectly fine but there's been one attempt at real carbon fibre props. Not successful, yet. Also there should be a high quality clear prop coming soon. Search "Carbon Fibre Prop Testing" at AR.Drone-flyers for more info
Aside from losing a c-clip that flew off never to be found again when I started to balance props... I find that the prop does not move as freely on the shaft as in this demo. It doesn't really move freely enough to balance by this method... there is some discernible friction on the shaft. Ideas?
AR Drone Show w/ Kyle Tarpley Actually, I just found something that works perfectly. I have a 1/16th inch pin punch that I got to do some other work with. It is hexagonal like a pencil. It is an almost PERFECT fit for the prop, very little wobble from being too small. And the prop moves quite freely on it, so it can be balanced just fine. This is easier to hold horizontal than a paper clip, since it has flat sides. I'll send you a pic if I figure out a way to get it to you.
Hello Kyle. I hope you can help me. My Drone is not able to go up it remains in the same position after take off. It can rotate, go forward and backwards and from one side to the other, no problem. But, if by any reason it goes up, suddenly it starts going down slowly even if I am pushing up. Thanks for any answer that can help me!
Can anyone help me with my Ar drone 2.0? My drone had a hard crash. nothing really serious. But now my drone on take off and in hover it has a slow spin. I have tryed new shafts, re-balance the props, put new gears, reset and flat trim each time and it still does the slow spin on hover. Anyone have any suggestions? It would be a big help.
My drone is constantly confusing the front from back and when I'm outside it will randomly go up fast so I have press the emergency cut off and it will from like 40 ft or more. Is there anything I can do?
No chance this is because it's accidentally in Absolute Control or tilt modes is it? Something's not right there. Was there a recent crash or anything that sticks out?
hey kyle i dig your videos brother, ive had my ar drone for a year but only got to fly it once , christmas night i flew it into a building and one motor broke and a landing leg. My question is do i have to replace the whole central cross or can i modify the landing leg after i replace the motor? looking forward to your reply thanks a million
Thanks Savon. Episodes 1 and 2 show cross replacement, actually you're better off watching the higher quality episode 36 on upgrading the cross. It's the same surgery, just with a different cross, but that'll be the best how-to to follow along with to replace a stock cross. That episode also shows motor replacement. If you only broke a foot on the cross (and didn't crack the cross down the center) you may be able to fly on it still, after replacing the motor
Thanks for taking the time out to reply, your videos are super helpful, and if its just that simple then I will be purchasing a motor plus the tool kit from your site soon, amongst other cool items thanks bro
Ever since I had to replace my props my drone has been either unable to take off (due to the known blade flattening shipping issue) and then too unbalanced to fly properly (due to unbalanced pros). Drives me absolutely nuts - considering i've paid $400 is spares and even another drone as backup.
Hey Kyle, I have a little problem with my drone. It keeps going the right. When I first got it it did that out of the box. I adjusted the navi board and then it flew fine. I've made some mods now and it's back to going right. I've done every thing possible. I balanced and straightened the propellers (followed your episodes) I've checked the cross frame (fine) I checked the upgraded ultraflight gears (fine) I checked the upgraded bocabearings (fine) I checked all the shafts (fine) the only thing that seems to work when I adjust it is the navigation board. Do you think I should replace it? Do navi boards go bad and do that? I even went as far as making my drone completely stock again to check and it did it worst. Please help. Thank u for your time.
Hmm try checking your bottom cam for smudges or anything that might make it difficult to see the ground. I hate to give you such an annoying homework assignment but to keep from having to buy a nav board you don't need, try swapping the motors, props, etc, that are on the left side onto the right, and from the right to the left. If it's still leaning right it's not mechanical, and more likely to be a nav board (I've actually got them on sale for $35 right now), if it then starts leaning left you know it's got to be a bent motor shaft or something like that, something on one of the feet you swapped.
what if you have custom props like blue props then tape would be ruining the point of having a colored prop because it would cover the color is there any way to buy balanced blue props?
I don't know anyone who sells pre-balanced props, I do have colored -- including blue -- prop tape in my store, centralusdronesales.ecrater.com. Regardless of color it'll look best if you put the tape on the underside of the prop.
Probably something else. Try rotating each prop with your finger, see if one gives more resistance than the others. If one does, take that foot apart and inspect each part. Probably a bent shaft, motor shaft, damaged gear -- something like that.
Yeah I know that guy, he gets his hulls off me. Yeah for people like you and me that want to upgrade every single part of our drones, the lack of a good upgrade prop is a real buzz kill. I don't know why parrot isn't offering a slew of upgrades for those who are willing to shell out the money and time.
I bougt mine used as well. Whe guy that sold it marked it as "does not work". the only problem was that the rotors were on backwards. look up online for how they're supposed to be- It should be easy to spot a backwards one
Yeah you can balance, you can also straighten them by softening them up with a blow dryer or steam... But yeah the "high performance" props are crap, worse than stock. I was talking to another subscriber the other day, he uses orange tape on the tips of his props so that when they're in rotation it looks like large orange circles. As far as performance there's nothing on the market and I haven't heard either parrot or any third parties with plans to produce any

check your settings on your phone and make sure the hull setting (indoor or outdoor) is matching whats fitted on the drone. This lets it know what weight and therefore power to lift the drone
It's a good method for balancing a rotating element. It's similar to the way how they balance tyres in a car.
Bending in transit doesn't seem to be an issue. Just a simple balance does the trick
Well taking material OFF is better for responsiveness and battery savings (no matter how little it probably is) and not to mention less string on the motor. I use an exacto knife and sandpaper to ballance my blades.
Ah, much better now, thanks Kyle

To get a GOOD balance on the propeller, the shaft must be smooth as in polished.
Use 1500 grit sandpaper to polish the shaft.
Next video, how to focus your camera...
How about a before and after video to compare a balanced and unbalanced prop job.
In the Drone control app there's a slider for maximum vertical. maybe you have set it really low?
Yeah if someone out there knows of any third-party upgrades props in the works let us know. I spent 2009-11 in China and still have contacts over there, I'm tempted to send then some stock props for a mold and have them use a stronger plastic. Have you had a recent crash and had to replace some parts and after that it was acting funny, or is it brand new?
So swap motors straight across (the ones in the front by the camera... Swap them together, then the ones in the back swap them together) from right to left and left to right? Won't the propellers spin the wrong way?
Did you check the altitude max setting?? It might be set at 3 meter max.
titanium will definitely work. especially if you 'crash' into someone you dont like
1st of all. i love this yt channel. music and presentation also. my question is what would make a drone drift to the right? clean it underneath? inbalance props?

I have no idea how I was able to balance with a shaft in this video, because I've never been able to do it since. A paperclip will work fine.

Towerdog 727 was about to say
Paperclip..... GOT IT!, Thanks everyone!
What are the symptoms of an unbalanced propeller ? I have my drone doing 360° when going in a straight line.
That's more than unbalanced props. Sounds like probably a bent shaft.

ARDroneShow.com are you sure you reconnected them correctly? there are props marked A and C... you have to place them on the correct sides.
great video!!
why did my drone flip over on take off after replacing all my propeller's ?
+Hudson Valley Wedding Photographers you put the props back in the wrong places...
Can I use electrical tape or duct tape for this mod?
Electrical will work
mine just flies off to the right the second I take off

UCA?
Cant u just get some sanding paper and sand down the heavy side of the prop?
WOW , probably not a good idea ... { old saying " you can take it off ,but you can not put it back on " the tape idea seems well worth the effort ...
No!
That would compromise the aerodynamics of it
I thought the ar 2.0 were brushless motors
it is the ar 2.0 elite parrot
Kurt Lauer, the elite edition yes
Yeah you can balance, you can also straighten them by softening them up with a blow dryer or steam... But yeah the "high performance" props are crap, worse than stock.
