@Lance Clemings i get your point, but there are still bad spells. True Strike, Witch Bolt, and Crown of Madness are all on the wizard spell list. the wizard just has... better versions of those with other spells
@Lance Clemings concentration is a bad mechanic??? I don't get this, it allows for are of effect continuous spells without breaking things. I can agree on no concentration witch bolt, but if you remove concentration from things like... Summon elemental... Oh n o
@Lance Clemings this makes no sense at all. Congratulations, now every single combat from level 5 requires a spell caster who can cast dispell magic 7 times a fight to be meaningfully challenging. Meanwhile the wizard who gets stuck in meele? Randomly has to make a "concentration" check for a spell that doesn't have anything to do with concentration. What is your issue? Is it so hard to beleive that a caster would have to continue to maintain certain spells?
@Lance Clemings I agree that concentration can be altered and made better, but let's be realistic here within the rules of the game as they are, spell casters are already MUCH stronger than other classes and enemy types... Now I don't know about you but a blade singer with a standard AC of 21, if allowed to with its own kit use both haste and blur at the same time, would have an AC of 23, disadvantage on all attacks against it, much higher damage than others and all with access to the sheild spell. DND 5e is balanced around concentration. Yes it is a new mechanic, but getting rid of it breaks the current iteration of the game as one can stack effects into oblivion and become all but litterally unkillable. Now before you shout dispel magic... Counterspell. Action for reaction. Counterspell. Suddenly you now need TWO enemies in EVERY combat to hate on spellcasters... Concentration is baked into 5e, makes an ammount of sense. Now some spells you can take off concentration and it works great! Summon spells for example... Shouldn't be concentration, it invalidates a whole style of play and is kind of lame. Now I can agree with your idea of it being harder to cast in meele, though that would not be a "concentration" check, and would more likely be a dex check then con as it has nothing to do with constitution
Darkness + Devil Sight is like an ungodly amount of utility, it's Area Denial in large battlefields, in small confined spaces like hallways it can absolutely hamper any ranged enemies while giving melee enemies pause before rushing out of the darkness and into your own line of attack. You can cast it on something that you're holding and become a pretty good off tank. Caught in a situation where you're alone and defenseless and need to make an escape? Darkness. Need to get to a teammate to shove a potion down their throat but there's a group of enemies in the way that could potentially chop you into pieces with opportunity attacks? Darkness. Yes it does have drawbacks to it that make it somewhat dangerous, you need to be conscious of your parties needs and desires during the fight. But when it get it's chance to shine... Or not shine... It works absolute wonders.
Fun Fact: You can get almost all the benefits of the Foresight spell by taking Devil's Sight and casting Darkness on something you're carrying. As such I'd personally give Darkness 2 Davvys since it's a 2nd level spell that can give you the effects of a 9th level spell. Especially good if you're multiclassing into Sorcerer, Bard or Paladin and have some 2nd level slots after level 5.
Frankly, it's even better if you multiclass into a Shadow Sorcerer which allows you to cast Darkness using sorcery points. This, plus the Spell Sniper feat and the Eldritch Spear invocation, and you can cast magical darkness on an enemy, then snipe them from 600 feet away.
Unless your fighting something that also has devil's sight, truesight, or blindsight like devils, celestials, dragons, high-level demons, yugoloths, oozes, some undead, a couple of mostrosities, plants, an array of aberrations, most constructs, over a dozen elementals, a handful of fey, fifteen humanoids, and even two giants. Also, foresight always gives you advantage on everything including saves and ability checks while the devil's sight/darkness gimmick is only for attacks... sometimes.
Darkness is good if u take into account the devils sight invocation. My favorite warlock combo is putting down darkness, then immediately casting a fireball into it
amazing even. Remember that it does not hurt your allies, because they are unseen attackers, as well as blind, which cancels each other out (so it only hurts if they would have had adv otherwise)
Shadow of Moil is amazing for a melee build... others have disadvantage to hit you, if they do land a hit they take damage, and you have advantage on your attacks! It's gold.

Shadow of moil is one of the best warlock spells. Not only does it give you resistance to radient and the revenge attack, but it is also its own little darkness devils sight combo. So you also gain advantage on your eldritch blast, which is huge
Not sure why darkness was so low, when combined with devilsight (Which is awesome on its own) you can pretty much make an area where only you can see (Unless they have truesight or one of the other very powerful sights, but at this level, they probably don't) My favorite build with it was making a longbow wielding hexblade pact of the blade warlock, casting darkness on a small stone, and then just moving near that so I can snipe while effectively invisible.
Started my first session as a warlock the other week. So far I've only really done anything with Chill Touch, haven't even gone into melee range to use my cool hexblade bladepact stuff yet.
Shadow of Moil getting a 1 just seems baffling to me. The point of the spell is that you're heavily obscured to the enemies, so the means free advantage for you and free disadvantage for others. While it's hard for me to say it's useful for any Warlock, it's has plenty of merit for various builds.

Darkness is great with Devil's Sight, and it doesn't screw up your party like people thinks it does if you stand away from the fight and cast it on yourself.
Also, Shadow of Moil makes you heavily obscured, which is basically invisibilty, AKA incoming attacks have disadvantage, outgoing attacks have advantage.
Davvy, Synaptic Static's Debuff is amazing in general. Given the spell isn't concentration and each creature needs to make a save individually it allows you to make riskier plays while its up as a "minus 1d6" to an attack roll can also alternatively be thought of as 1d6 AC. Worst case scenario it gives all your allies a +1 AC for a couple of turns, at best they get a +6 AC bonus for the duration. Thank you for making the vid! I didn't want to come off as rude or anything, I just thought you should know! :)
I would love to see you cover different spell effects, like area denial or buff spells and why they are good to use. For a lot of players there is the mind set "if it dose not do a lot of dammage what is the point" and I think they would get something out of "why it is tactical to not just attack"
A note on any spell that has the "ritual" tag in Warlock. They are good if and ONLY if you have Pact of the Tome and Book of Ancient Secrets. With the book, you get a better version of the Wizard's ritual casting ability, allowing you to eventually cast literally every ritual spell in the game if you find the spellbook/spellscroll containing the spell. However, in that case the spell would not be taking up one of your precious spells known, so nothing I said invalidates Davy's opinion in this situation.
Shadow of Moil: you're heavily obscured, so it's like the Darkness spell but it moves with you, giving adv/dis, and anything that hits you within 10 feet gets 2d8 necrotic, the radiant resistance is more of a situational bonus, and pairing it with armor of agathys deals out tons of damage. Hexblades love this.
The funny part is I've watched all of these videos for fun but I don't normally like magic characters but warlock is as close as i will get and catch me over here watching this four times taking better notes than I did in Calc
My warlock used Mental Prison for the first time last night and it was AWESOME. We had just finished Descent Into Avernus and were doing oneshots with the same characters. I was in the somewhat unfortunate position of having lost my character in the middle of the campaign and being forced to make a new one that was already in Avernus (cue tiefling fiend pact warlock with an imp familiar). During last night's session, she successfully removed one enemy from the fight entirely by making him think he was *banished to Avernus and on a tiny island in the middle of the River Styx.*
I once played a rogue with the magic initiate feat and I took blade ward, and let me tell you resistance+uncanny dodge is one hell of a combo. I cast it before I entered any room.
I think people sleep on the Foresight spell. 8 hours, no concentration, advantage on everything (attack, ability checks, saves), disadvantage on all attack rolls to hit you, and you can cast it on someone else. It's literally made to cast on the level 20 warrior with the magic great axe so he can destroy a dungeon by himself. Or the monk with 4 attacks, stealth, evasion, reroll failed saves, and proficiencies in all saving throws. Cast on your your party's killing machine and it lasts most of the day. Even better with Elven Accuracy.
True Polymorph... man, that spell can be so good for roleplay. I had a chaotic neutral celestial warlock (Sylvia) who's mother was the BBEG once. Sylvia ended up siding with her mother over the party for a little while, before she decided that what her mother was doing had to stop. Syvlie didn't have the heart to attack her though... so she turned her mother (who was a witch) into a doll. Because she knew that if she killed her mother she'd go to one of the nastier afterlives. Sylvie held concentration for the duration, and it was permanent. Poor girl was inconsolable.
Well looks like you gotta come at me Davvy, I use darkness on my warlock. I'm sorry I like to create a cloud of darkness to fight in that other enemies can't see through but I can. Also used maddening darkness and single-handedly wrecked the barbarian by keeping them in maddening darkness when we playfully made an alternate timeline where my warlock went bad and the barbarian tried to stop her.
I did that with blink so my allies would just see me vanish and then a black shadow would appear, move around, and vanish, leaving corpses where there were enemies prior
Psychic scream is an amazing spell for getting rid of minion monsters or hoards. The spell selects up to 10 creatures all within 90 feet. So while the individual max damage is 84, the maximum it’ll deal overall is about 840 and it can stun if it doesn’t kill
Wizard video is gonna be 20 minutes long and Davvy is gonna have a skit with him surrounded by papers and either passed out from exhaustion or slipping into madness from sheer size of the wizard spell list. I'm calling it now.
Don't forget, Mind spike ALSO has only Semantic component. This basically makes it a silenced spell, if they can't see you cast it, they won't know you did. I like to imagine it's the forhead tap meme of "can't blank if you don't blank."
Quick note that Chill Touch is phenomenal in a game like Curse of Strahd or something with a lot of vampires/undead. They are often immune/resistant to necrotic damage, but if you're imposing disadvantage AND denying them 15-20 regeneration per round that's huge.
From a Warlock player, to a dm... is a jump. From what I've seen the Warlock player is the best to dm. I feel the Warlock covers everything without words.... Felix Kain.... Hell Cat
Davvy, bro, friend, Chad, please. Darkness is one of the best spells on warlock if they take Devil's Sight, which works through magical darkness, which means you're basically invisible on command
Eh the combo's overrated. You'll probably obscure your enemies to your friends as well, unless they have enough space to change positions or are melee. And you can still just aoe the obscured area. Might as well use a smokebomb and save your spell slot/concentration for something else.
Honestly, my favorite spell in the entire game is True Polymorph. Becoming an Adult Brass Dragon permanently at the cost of literally nothing but 1 action, who can then then turn back into your character at will is by far the coolest thing to occur at any of my dnd tables
Shadow Of Moil does provide Advantage on all your Eldritch Blasts and Disadvantage to anyone attacking you. I think it’s underrated how good that is in any encounter.
Darkness should be much higher for the sheer power of combining it with the devils sight invocation, forcing disadvantage for everyone and giving advantage to you
I've loaded up my Warlock with spells that require Int saving throws, including Enemies Abound. Because nothing like making the enemy cave troll go on a rampage inside the ranks of the hobgoblin shield wall, then drop Darkness on top of it to cause everything to turn into mass panic, and just start firing Eldritch Blast beams into whatever leaves the Gobbo Blender.
Lol. As soon Davvy said Wizard in the end a "Rated M for Mature" game ad start playing and i was expecting a shit ton of curses from him. But it only was a Desperados 3 ad. XD
Contact other plane 1 rating why? Cast it at the end of a day. You have a ~25% chance to get your questions answered, otherwise just go to bed. Better on a wizard where you can ritual it and you have a better saving throw, but still works here.
Enemies abound wrecks bosses with minions. Used this in the Stormkings Thunder Campaign on the Flame Giant boss. Let the party skip the encounter since we left as he wrecked his own forces. We were already badly hurt and couldnt do another back to back fight.
Create Bonfire is both area denial and a save as opposed to attack roll, opponent in Hvy Arm, Create Bonfire, immobile foe, create bonfire, need to block a door, create bonfire.
Summon Greater Demon is actually really good, I would skip the lesser one though as that one is too uncontrollable (plus those demons aren't even that effective)
I wouldnt say that you should always switch charm person out for charm monster. Sure, charm monster can charm anything, but a 4th level charm person can charm 4 people. Both are a good addition to your toolkit.
I don't count Cursed Child as a Harry Potter story. Real Harry Potter books are mystery stories disguised as fantasy stories. The Cursed Child is a bad time travel story disguised as a Harry Potter story.
Toll the Dead: A really good spell, almost on par with eldritch blast because typically, you’ll be doing that d12 because chances are, your enemy will be missing at least one hp when you cast this. True strike: Nothing is worth having true strike. Even be one chap is too much.
I feel the need to point out w/ witch bolt that so long as you hold concentration it deals (at maximum) 5D12 LIGHTNING DAMAGE, FOR UP TO (in a 1v1 situation) 5 Times! that at least deserves 2 Davvys
I have a 20 strength fiendish bladepact warlock, melee boi. Athlete feat + jump invocation was pretty nice for casually high jumping over 20-25 feet high walls and long jumping ~60 feet every turn in battle.

Truesight is 6th level.
Cast it on your pact weapon
Be a drow you coward
Unless your fighting something that also has devil's sight, truesight, or blindsight like devils, celestials, dragons, high-level demons, yugoloths, oozes, some undead, a couple of mostrosities, plants, an array of aberrations, most constructs, over a dozen elementals, a handful of fey, fifteen humanoids, and even two giants.
Also, foresight always gives you advantage on everything including saves and ability checks while the devil's sight/darkness gimmick is only for attacks... sometimes.
I didn't realize how starved I was for "ESPECIALLY THE WIZARD" until it appeared again...
...Hello, Darkness, my old friend...
'uploaded 10 seconds ago' *launches himself at the video* My favourite class let's goooooooooo
Darkness is good if u take into account the devils sight invocation. My favorite warlock combo is putting down darkness, then immediately casting a fireball into it
amazing even. Remember that it does not hurt your allies, because they are unseen attackers, as well as blind, which cancels each other out
(so it only hurts if they would have had adv otherwise)
Shadow of Moil is amazing for a melee build... others have disadvantage to hit you, if they do land a hit they take damage, and you have advantage on your attacks! It's gold.
"Behold as I cast True Polymorph!"
And what are you going to turn the boss into?
"I target myself"
Uhhh what?
"To turn into a dragon"
Even if your patron abandons you?
"I won't need a patron when I'm a dragon!"
Darkness + Devil's sight. hardcore good.
Just convince your ally to cast darkness so you don't need to use a precious spell slot on a spell with no scaling.
Take Shadow of Moil and you get the same thing and more, and you don't need Devil's Sight, so you free up an invocation.
@@TheHornedKing but why would you not take Devil's Sight? You see it all light, magical or otherwise, in full color out to 120 ft. You don't have to worry about the spotting penalties for detail like the grayscale darkvisions do.
@@braith117 But what if you want something else?
@@TheHornedKing you have more evocation slots than spell slots.
Hell yeah, the second best roleplaying class
1st?
I imagine Bard
I once played a fith level monk and a 1st level warlock who would cast hex and deal 8d6 with his bare hands
monk ranger (gloomstalker in particular) is a very potent combination for that reason.
Gloomstalker 4 shadow monk x (wood elf) is one of my favourite multiclasses ever
Hex bitch slap!
Your timing is impeccable Davvy I have a buddy that I am going to tell him about the warlock class and I needed a funny and informational video to let him know about all the bad ass spells it possesses so thank you from the bottom of my dming heart I appreciate the video you’ve made and yeah this will help my buddy has been wanting to get him to spell casters if he goes with warlock a lot so thank you it’s appreciated
Power word kill is pretty good when you take it with polymorph.
I know of a powerful spell Caster that can help you he once helped me
Shadow of moil is one of the best warlock spells.
Exactly, it is essentially a single-person darkness spell that also bites back. Plus it stacks so well with Armor of Agathys.
Plus, it's almost impossible to just bypass by RAW.
@@maxx8362 Stack in Mirror Image as well for extra avoidance, and then if somehow you do get hit, add on Hellish Rebuke so that they're getting hurt three ways.
....Sure, that's literally all your spell slots, but it's cool
I hear a John Mulaney reference, I like.
I hear Davvy make a John Mulaney reference, I like MORE!
I've never climbed a fence that high before
In a campaign with a demon summoning cult, banishment is bonkers. Especially if you're a flying warlock. "Oh. You summoned a big scary demon? Let me just make it go away and fly out of range for a minute"
Especially the wizard. Good luck sir chap.
Given that he rated Shadow of Moil and Darkness at 1 I'm guessing he doesnt actually play Warlock.
darkness is not good without devils sight. With devils sight though, it is a must have
(and another reason for why drow-half elf warlocks are op)
@@aldoushuxley5953 why would it make them Op, they don't have any ability to see through magical darkness beyond what anyone else does
@@Neutral_Tired Op for Warlocks and Sorlocks I mean.
(Half Elfs are very good in general with their stats, they get elven accuracy, and that combos very nicely with the spells they get)
I think ya forgot ta add the ranger druid and cleric vids ta your big book of spells playlist. I found them in your video list but not in this playlist just thought I'd let you know in case you forgot. Love you vids keep up the awesome work!😘👍
Darkness is great with Devil's Sight, and it doesn't screw up your party like people thinks it does if you stand away from the fight and cast it on yourself.
Sickening Radiance "decent zoner" I mean, it's got massive range and inflicts exhaustion. It is a pretty brutal spell
Inb4 Chappy realises what Shadow of Moil actually does.
I would love to see you cover different spell effects, like area denial or buff spells and why they are good to use. For a lot of players there is the mind set "if it dose not do a lot of dammage what is the point" and I think they would get something out of "why it is tactical to not just attack"
I actually chose warlock changeling, its pretty fun
I was taken off guard by the re: your brains
Very good video and also informative, thanks, I'll take this into account on the warlock I'm making
Sword Burst as a spin attack has completely sold me on the cantrip
My party loves Polymorph shenanigans:
- Turn the NPC into a sloth, then shove him into a bag of holding. Wait for him to suffocate.
Love you Davie chappie thanks for keeping me interested in Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition in the way you present it to all of us fan nerds out there
Shadow of Moil: you're heavily obscured, so it's like the Darkness spell but it moves with you, giving adv/dis, and anything that hits you within 10 feet gets 2d8 necrotic, the radiant resistance is more of a situational bonus, and pairing it with armor of agathys deals out tons of damage. Hexblades love this.
Awesome, been waiting for this video! Thanks Davvy, made my Saturday
Love the random left 4 dead 2 jukebox song reference tucked into the middle of this.
4:19 Until the day you're fighting a Mind Flayer. Then it's invaluable.
The funny part is I've watched all of these videos for fun but I don't normally like magic characters but warlock is as close as i will get and catch me over here watching this four times taking better notes than I did in Calc
''We're almost done!" ''Oh wait next's the wizard.''
I can't wait for the Wizard Spell List XD!
I know of a powerful spell Caster that can help you he once helped me
My warlock used Mental Prison for the first time last night and it was AWESOME.
3:35Surprisingly when some magic shenanigans are afoot, this has always helped me discern if that sword was cursed by a feye.
I used darkness....hexblade with warlock dark vision. Only I could fight. No survivors
I did that with blink so my allies would just see me vanish and then a black shadow would appear, move around, and vanish, leaving corpses where there were enemies prior
@@torunsmok5890 Oh that's a cool way to use it.
Thank you Davvy for making this.
Unfortunately, I spent so long waiting for it that I made a deal with a devil and now...
Don't forget, Mind spike ALSO has only Semantic component. This basically makes it a silenced spell, if they can't see you cast it, they won't know you did. I like to imagine it's the forhead tap meme of "can't blank if you don't blank."
0:02 that matt mercer impression is spot on & terrifying.
Quick note that Chill Touch is phenomenal in a game like Curse of Strahd or something with a lot of vampires/undead. They are often immune/resistant to necrotic damage, but if you're imposing disadvantage AND denying them 15-20 regeneration per round that's huge.
I cant help myself but I love using dimension door 2 electric boogaloo
In defense of chill touch: the boss healing mid-fight is a regular pain in some groups.
From a Warlock player, to a dm... is a jump. From what I've seen the Warlock player is the best to dm. I feel the Warlock covers everything without words.... Felix Kain.... Hell Cat
Davvy, bro, friend, Chad, please. Darkness is one of the best spells on warlock if they take Devil's Sight, which works through magical darkness, which means you're basically invisible on command
yeah, but then everyone in the party absolutely hates you ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Eh the combo's overrated. You'll probably obscure your enemies to your friends as well, unless they have enough space to change positions or are melee. And you can still just aoe the obscured area. Might as well use a smokebomb and save your spell slot/concentration for something else.
time for those spooky eldritch bois!
I love Armor of Aghathys so much
Honestly, my favorite spell in the entire game is True Polymorph.
Darkness should be much higher for the sheer power of combining it with the devils sight invocation, forcing disadvantage for everyone and giving advantage to you
you want to get in the way of the entire party just to make yourself an effective combatant then be my guest
@@Neutral_Tired social distancing is always important as a defense against fireball
Your Hunger of Hadar Doge meme got a good laugh from me XD
I've loaded up my Warlock with spells that require Int saving throws, including Enemies Abound. Because nothing like making the enemy cave troll go on a rampage inside the ranks of the hobgoblin shield wall, then drop Darkness on top of it to cause everything to turn into mass panic, and just start firing Eldritch Blast beams into whatever leaves the Gobbo Blender.
davvy: except jump
my player: magic piledriver
I'm sorry, you have XP to Level 3, *as a patron?!* That's a flex of never-before-seen proportions.
Pact slots automatically scale level, but mystic arcanums CAN'T be cast at higher levels.
Alright.
That Jonathan Coulton reference was perfect.
Better on a wizard where you can ritual it and you have a better saving throw, but still works here.
tome warlocks (who get rituals) can use it well
Enemies abound wrecks bosses with minions. Used this in the Stormkings Thunder Campaign on the Flame Giant boss. Let the party skip the encounter since we left as he wrecked his own forces. We were already badly hurt and couldnt do another back to back fight.
Chill touch can stop healing and the person you use it on has disadvantage when attacking you, it’s a pretty good cantrip all things considered
Create Bonfire is both area denial and a save as opposed to attack roll, opponent in Hvy Arm, Create Bonfire, immobile foe, create bonfire, need to block a door, create bonfire.
So, no Maddening Darkness, Shadow Moil, or any Summoning of Demons...
Wow, why don't you just kill all my edgy fun while ur at it!
I came here to play warlock if i wanted to make smart decisions I would've played wizard like a huge nerd
Summon Greater Demon is actually really good, I would skip the lesser one though as that one is too uncontrollable (plus those demons aren't even that effective)
Shadow of Moil is super good on a Hexblade. Concealment to avoid getting hit and damage to everything that *does* hit you
I wouldnt say that you should always switch charm person out for charm monster. Sure, charm monster can charm anything, but a 4th level charm person can charm 4 people. Both are a good addition to your toolkit.
Use at will spells and 6/5 stars for double crit smite on hexadin effective use of slots
Hexadin is awesome!
My take on the Hexadin:

I've been looking forward to this~
I don't count Cursed Child as a Harry Potter story.
Darkness with Devil’s sight is awesome
I have a 20 strength fiendish bladepact warlock, melee boi. Athlete feat + jump invocation was pretty nice for casually high jumping over 20-25 feet high walls and long jumping ~60 feet every turn in battle.
Darkness can be REALLY good on Warlock IF you take the Devil's Sight Invocation. You can see them, they can't see you. Which means you get advantage to hit, they get disadvantage to hit you.
