    Just found this project.
Little tip for removing bearing cups.
But a bead of weld around the inside of the cup, build it up so you can use the bead as a lip to drift/hammer it out. The heat build up will loosen the cup as well.
This method works a treat on lorry/bus axle wheel bearing packs (can take up to 40t pressure on a hydraulic press to remove) so motorbike headstock bearings should fly out!
Also to remove bearings on a shaft, take your dremmel/angle grinder with a cutting disc and slice the race, not completely through, in 2 places opposed to each other. The cuts release the tension in the metal. Then you can do the following:
    1. Take a cold chisel and sharply hit the cuts, the bearing will either split or move.
    2. Use the cold chisel like a drift in the cuts to walk the bearing off the shaft.

      @@obs301 Been in Engineering/Mechanics since I was a teenager.
Spent 20 +years as a Mechanic working on everything from cars, Construction, agricultural, recycling equipment. However my time in the British Army as Tank Mechanic is the highlight.
With regards to Handtools, buy the best you can afford.
Doesn't have to be snap-on, I've had good experience with Teng tools.
Do invest in a good ball Pein engineers hammer, claw hammers are for carpenters and roofers!

Hey, I’m thinking of jumping into an xj600 project as well, but I’m just wondering where did you find the replacement bearing kit as well as the fork rebuild kit(seals etc)? Is it a specific website or just off of the diameter of parts? I’m having trouble finding parts for the pre-diversion bikes. Thanks again, this series is a huge help and inspiration and I’ve been watching them multiple times :-)

Hey i search ebay for the specifics, but yea you are right its not so easy to find all the time. This website also has some parts but these are very expensive. www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-xj600-1986-51j-europe-2651j-300e2_model38085/partslist/

Nice content man! I'm doing a project from XJ600 '86 as well. At this point is all taken apart, frame and shocks painted and ready for assembly. What about back suspension? Are you planning to leave it stock and just rebuild or change it all with something new?

Coming up in next episode, i was hoping to get a new mono shock, but its abit expensive and the old is not broken. So i might just keep the old.
