The one regular aka XL(2 handles) and the one handle is now the "corner feeder"

Thank you very much for a very thorough review. You answered a bunch of my questions regarding which model to purchase. I know the company is looking for video links if you have an interest in sending it to them.

I just found your video & it's great. I have a few questions...1. As the pan gets closer to the bottom do you notice they have any problems reaching the hay? The tub looks tall. 2. Do you use the grazer in addition to pasture in the summer?
    Thanks for any info!

Thanks for watching and I'm glad it was helpful! The tub on the XL is fairly tall, however none of my horses have a problem reaching the bottom. I've actually caught the mini eating from it occasionally. He likes to tilt it sideways and practically climb in 🤣 It's quite impressive.
Usually as they eat down the hay there's no issues, but every once in a while it does compact, so I just fluff up the bottom and that takes care of that.
As far as pasture in my area of the West, it's more for entertainment value than horse food, so I do use the Porta Grazers year round to feed hay.

I had trouble figuring mine out.the directions said to "hump" the flakes over , I realized if it wasn't loaded correctly, the hay would get smashed down and she couldn't get any hay out. It would get packed down. Now that I have it figured out ,it's amazing! Do yours not get smashed loading flat flakes like that?

I'm glad you figured out how to set it up well for you! I've noticed there's a lot of variability in whether I can curve the hay over and whether it gets smooshed or not. For example when I use grass hay it's a lot easier to fluff and curve over. But with alfalfa it's usually so dense it won't curve. It just stays flat or the flake breaks in half. How tight the bales are also seems to impact how much I can bend the flakes. Also if I try to overfill the feeder they have a harder time getting hay out.
I know what you mean about how you are supposed to load it, but I truly don't have issues with hay getting smashed down and my horses getting hay out however I load it. Especially with alfalfa it just won't curve over for me like grass and they don't have any trouble so I stopped worrying about it.

I have a porta grazer and followed all the instructions for using it. But my horse seems to only eat out of the 2 center holes instead of spinning the tray around. So now there are teeth scrape marks and rough edges around those 2 holes. She doesn't have any cuts on her gums but I am concerned this may wear her teeth down. Have you had any issues like that?

Hey there! Thanks for watching! It sounds like she hasn't quite fully go the hang of it yet. I had a bit of that when I had an impatient horse. I would suggest a few things. One, have an adjustment period where you offer hay both in and out of the feeder. So if they're really hungry there's some loose hay available, and then they can come to the feeder more calmly. Also make sure they have lots of hay available so they aren't stressed about how are they going to get to the hay?!?! I would also check the feeder and make sure you don't overfill it. It will spin best if the pan isn't pushed tight against the top lip.
I would also fluff your hay a bit. They may not recommend that on their website, but especially alfalfa can be super tightly compacted, and when a horse is trying to figure out the feeder, having the hay be more loosely connected helps them to be able to more easily grab a bite. You can also make sure you're using the pan (lid w/holes) with the largest hole size. (If you have the smaller hole size you can order a pan individually). Hope that makes sense, and helped! Good luck!

Hi, you don’t layer the flakes like the instructions show? I’m still trying to figure out mine. Also, when there’s a little hay left when you re-fill..do you just fluff it up, or remove it and put the old stuff on top? Thx!!

Do you mean putting them in curved like a rainbow? If so, in the XL feeder, the diameter is wide enough the hay just lays flat. In the regular, sometimes I do... And sometimes I don't. It depends on how I'm feeling. Sometimes I'll just throw the flakes in a little to one side then the other so the pile curves on top. It seems to all work out. I'd just keep an eye on your horse and see if it makes a difference for them.
When there's a little hay left when I refill, I do make an effort to fluff it a bit. If it gets too compacted down at the bottom, the pan will spin on top and the horses have a hard time getting the last bit of hay. Fluffing seems to fix that.
And sometimes I'll pull hay from the bottom to reload on the top. It depends how long it's been down there. 😊
Thanks for watching and hope this helps!

I am concerned about the "split" or "crack" by the hole. Did that happen just from the horses eating from it??

    • @resilientreiner
      @resilientreiner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Gosh I wish I remembered exactly how that got there. I think it was when I had the pan out of the feeder and the split was human caused. I did get a replacement pan, but the cracked one is smooth to the touch and neither I nor the horses were ever scratched.
