    Interesting fact you missed - Ibanez did not design the Tube Screamer, they only came up with the name. Tube Screamer is a registered name owned by Hoshino Gakki Co. Ltd., the parent group of Ibanez The tube screamer circuit was designed by Mr. S Tamura an engineer employed by Nisshin Onpa. Nisshin Onpa is an engineering company that did work for various well known Japanese brands, including Ibanez. Nisshin Onpa now sells pedals,such as the OD808, including their original circuits for the Tube Screamer, under the Maxon brand.

    Hello Phillip !
    Fift (5th) fact : Maxon invented, developed the pedal for their client : Ibanez !
    That's the reason why I bought a Maxon thinking it was more "fairplay"... I bought the OD 808. But the most beautiful, I think, is the Maxon OD 820 (such a great tone but very expensive).

    Tube amps can create both asymmetrical or symmetrical distortion depending on the circuit and design. A bit off-topic but good to remember it's not an absolute definition for tube sound.

      1: play with the tone knobs all you want, it'll still sound like shit
      2: play with the volume all you want, it'll just be louder or softer shit
      3: play with the gain all you want, it'll still sound buzzier than a swarm of bees
      4: you fucked up when you bought one

    • @aryinc
      @aryinc 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      naaah it's just shit. people that use it, don't use the metal zone for it's distortion but for the eq part. many death metal bands use this pedal for it's eq sound. but they can sound decent tough, mostly when not connected ^^.

    If I could only own one pedal it would be a Tubescreamer. The ability to create an overloaded amp at a low volume was the reason I first bought one. I have a drive channel on my main amp, which is valve, but I actually use the tubescreamer for overdrive rather than the gain on the amp at times. . I like the much maligned TS7. Ibanez had the 'Tonelok' series of pedals with the push down controls and they had tubescreamer circuits designed to fit them. They are a Tubescreamer AND they have a boost switch that I think sounds great. That boost switch really makes a huge difference. No other model has that feature. I have been through a number over the years. They can be found quite cheap. I use a Tubescreamer as a clean boost too. You just turn the drive to zero and the volume up. The tone control is very nice to use too.

    I've had a ts10 on my board for over 10 years, it's a great pedal, special in its own right, has a little dirtier tone than the ts9 or 808, I love it and it's not going anywhere!

    My friend has THE VERY FIRST EVER prototype TS808 & TS9. It's sooooo bad ass. The 808 is natural aluminum cast color, has just 2 knobs, one on either side, it has a trimpot inside for I believe the tone? It has no logo or recessed space for the Ibanez plate on top, the circuit board is bread board and there's only one in the world. Very fuckin cool!

  • @Gloveberg1
    @Gloveberg1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    That's strange because I always read SRV used two 808's and in fact there was supposedly one of his original 808's for sale on Reverb last year.

    • @bbnatedogg
      @bbnatedogg 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      He used TS-808's, TS-9's and later on TS-10's. I believe that for the majority of the time he used 2, he was using TS-9's. He used one for more of a cleanish boost and one as a drive. Later on he added a Fuzz Face or clone as another distortion.

    • @reverendg5937
      @reverendg5937 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anders Frank you are correct. SRV was under the impression that the Newest offering from the Company, in this case Ibanez, was the Best Model available. This misconception is what is driving the used market for the TS-10. Not to say you can’t have the TS-10 modded into a good pedal, but why?!? The HW TS-808 or a rechipped newer TS-9 is the way to go.👍🏼

    If you can find one (very difficult), the Mojo Drive, by Lovepedal is a truly great overdrive
    box. Tons of head room, responsive tone control with a wide range, and a nice nastiness
    factor. I find Tube Screamers kind of compressed and mid rangey for my ears, even
    though they are iconic and great od's. For the price and what they do, outstanding. Plus,
    everyone knows what they are and how to use them. Goes a long way for a pedal you
    can count on almost anywhere to give you a good tube driven sound.

    Interesting + stimulating..... I don't buy hype pedals. I buy what sounds good to me. It's soooo stupid that people think you have to have a TS808 or TS10 to get a SRV tone. What you really need is some talent in those fingers. But, it's very unlikely anyone will achieve SRV talent.

    • @Guitarpiper

    What you said in #2 seems wrong, or at minimum confusingly worded. I am not fully sure how the words symmetrically and asymmetrically compare to hard and soft clipping or square wave distortion and round wave overdrive, but if my understanding is correct, tubes are pleasing to the ear because they are even order harmonics and square wave solid state distortion is brittle and piercing because they are odd order harmonics. So I would say an overdrive like the Ibanez ts808/9/10 or Maxon od808/9 is more like a soft clipping, even harmonic, round wave and symmetrical like a tube and a distortion pedal like the earlier Boss ds-1 is hard clipping, odd ordered, square wave and asymmetrical like a solid state chip. Right?

    Stevie Ray Vaughn used the TS-808 and TS9 pedals for many years before the TS10 was available, and it was with these two that his trademark tone was unleashed. If you’ll check photos of his pedals, it is always one of those. I’m guessing he started using a TS10 later in his career, and reportedly favored it, according to Rene. As the TS10 wasn’t available until some time in 1986, you can be assured a TS-808 or TS9 was what he was using on seminal albums Texas Flood and Couldn’t Stand The Weather, and all the related live shows for years following. This would prove that it was Stevie’s TS-808 and TS9 tones that blew the world away, not the TS10. I believe it is more likely SRV used the TS10 in the few years before his tragic passing, proving it is also a great OD pedal. Just setting the timeline and facts straight there!

    here's a little lesser known fact the first tube screamers were sold by and labeled ibanez but they were actually designed and built by maxon, thats right ladies and gents ibanez contracted out for their tube screamer initially.

    Phil, Great video as always! What is the relationship between Maxon & Ibanez as the pedals seem identical? Thanks!
