Fantastic Shaye and Stuart. Your videos are definitely worthy of greater things than TH-cam where sadly natural and esoteric and beautiful subjects are demonetized. TH-cam seems to favor and monetize the sick, dark and deviant side of the world.
Love this - we only have a 1/4 acre lot in the city but I am going to incorporate some of these ideas into our backyard!
I love BBC gardening shows, but they never seem to fully apply to the homestead environment. I must say, your new series of videos is nothing short of amazing. Beautifully shot, and thoroughly applicable. Thank you for producing content. I always leave your videos feeling inspired and moved. I grew the black watchman hollyhock-Renee's garden seeds. I wasn't crazy about the color, but I wanted to dye some wool from my sheep. It turned a beautiful magenta-purple color. Really fun! TASHA TUDOR'S GARDEN is a favorite of mine too. Thanks for the video.
We live up in Kelowna, and I love the way the valley turns so green this time of year as it warms up and the wet season begins, and also how unnatural it feels, when I'm used to the yellow dead grass. The garden is looking great :)

Many of my faves - hollyhocks, peonies, hydrandgeas -- your garden is amazing. Tasha Tudor was such an inspiring woman. I loved all her books and read them to my children - and now my grands. I even have a corgi dog because of her lol. Great videos!!

If you want really big rhubarb, give it organic lawn fertilizer. The nitrogen will make the stems grow a couple of feet high with big juicy thick stems that will keep you making things like rhubarb crumble, jam etc all the way into late August /September. We have around 7 crowns or more all mature and give them lawn fertiliser 2-3 times a year and they're huge. We're on chalk/alkaline soil though too so the drainage is excellent. 😊
Spring is such an amazing gift.
So beautiful. I can't wait for things to start growing here and trees to green up. Spring is really late this year for us. And I will have to hold off on to many flowers this year. I will put some flowers to attract pollinators.

Beautiful! Greetings from back in Alabama Shaye and Stuart, where it's unusually cool and WET! Just got tomatoes in and still holding off on many warm weather crops that are normally going full speed now. I look forward to following the progress of your farm through the seasons! Love your sense of style! I've almost finished "Welcome to the Farm" and then will be diving into your cookbooks. Get busy, I'll need more reading material soon! :)

In my yard there are tall, yellow flowers that have come up year after year since 1985.

Unfortunately, Tasha passed away years ago. She was an amazing artist whose illustrations won my heart when I was a toddler. I have a copy of her book, "And It Was So" given to me by my grandmother when I was an adult because I wore out her copy.

Deadhead the rhubarb flower. 2 yrs you can pick 10 %. 3rd year. Regular harvest.

Bakers creek sells some black hollyhock seeds. They are lovely.
You're very lucky to be able to grow dahlias in pots. Where i live they get stunted, dont bloom as much or as big, and end up with powdery mildew :(
Lamb’s ears is edible herb plus useful as original nature’s toilet tissue paper to wipe as well as period pads.
Rhubarb needs to have the flowers taken off if you're planning to pull the leaves for food. Letting it flower will only stunt the growth and make the other leaves fewer. It's like a lettuce plant bolting. I've grown lots of rhubarb and I always cut the flowers til I've used all the rhubarb I need..........dried, frozen, jams, sauce.......just to mention a few ways.
Rhubarb leaves should not be eaten, they can be poisonous. Unless you eat a lot you probably won't die but you might wish you would. Make sure to only eat the stalks and not the leaves.

How exciting! Lambs ear and hollyhock have medicinal uses as well! I have such huge plans for our gardens. Everything will have multitasking functions, beauty, pollinator and beneficial insect havens, and culinary or medicinal properties. A veritable cornucopia of wild yet beautiful function. ♥ I've been learning as much as I can about plant, soil, mineral, medicinal, and production through living web farms. Hours and hours of learning, while I am planting, housekeeping, cooking, and even feeding the livestock (Emma, one of my cows, loves to get fussy and loud though when I'm taking care of her if I'm distracted by listening to anyone else but her, haha).
Curious what the medicinal uses for Lambs ear is. I love that little plant - sooo soft!
Charlotte VB - It's edible fresh and steamed. It was commonly used for battlefield dressings to stop bleeding, and can be taken internally (in teas) or applied topically for insect stings (once bruised). It has antimicrobial properties that help for a variety of internal and external issues. Look it up, it's fascinating!
Silly question: where did you get your hat? I work outside and am always on the lookout for a sturdy sun hat.

If you want to know the master of getting rid of weeds and no till farming try Back to Eden with Paul Gautschi. I have been using his techniques for about 4 years and I don't really have to weed at all.

I also grow lambs ear but in our new home have found them to being attacked by “snails and slugs “I believe, anyone else have that issue? Leaves being eaten to bits have tried DE and egg shells but doesn’t seem to be working, any suggestions. BTW......Absolutely lovely garden

I grew hollyhocks for the first time this year and they looked great for about two weeks and then became covered in fungus and died. I am not growing again in the neat future but am going to try this different plant in the hibiscus family called lavender chiffon. looks great and is also a perennial. thought you might like to hear about this just in case you have the same problem I did.

Love your videos! Your peacefulness is a great start to my day. I found you through Justin Rhodes and have been watching ever since. I have been searching for a hat just like yours but have had no luck. would you mind sharing the source please?
For years, I have ordered from the same online nursery you got yours from and have had the best results by not planting the entire fiber pot, even though you are supposed to. If the roots havent enmeshed with it, i just remove completely. If they have, i at least cut off the top part and slit the sides. I am curious, too, about planting your perennials through the landscape fabric. Over the years i have done roses ans shrubs that way, but figured my perennials would not multiply by either seed or spreading because the landscape fabric would hinder that. Have you found that to be the case? I grew up on a large farm, but our Rhode Island Reds never produced those beautifully colored eggs, so lovely and picturesque.. Love all of it. Man, don't you guys get pests? Everything looks so open and free. I have to fence for the wiles of the desert: rabbits, javalinas, and deer and net for lizards, birds, and locust. Flowering vines are my friend otherwise my gsrden would look like a prison.
It’s ok to rough up roots of root bound plants. Let’s them spread out.
What is your biggest pest obstacle?? We have wild rabbits that have eaten every thing I plant in the ground, with special attention to anything labeled ‘rabbit/deer resistant’. How do you keep all the pests away?!?

Rhubarb loves a little stress. Let a goat eat half of it or dig it up, split it in two and replant. It will take off even more.

I was able to kill a whole huge lawn of tenacious Bermuda grass with cardboard and 8” of woodchips. It really works well.
Margaret Rosin it never came back? Because I have a front lawn full of it and I’m trying to kill it with roundup. I know it’s really bad to use it but I don’t know what else to do. How did you do it?
Sunshine Luke covered it with a lot of cardboard and 8” of woodchips. It comes up very little on the edges here and there but nothing bad. It’s gone 98%.
I did the same with my backyard food forest. South Texas grasses are so invasive that I use 10 layers of very thick cardboard and one wheel barrow of wood chips that I did not spread per cardboard area, overlapping each one. Then went back and gently spread the wood chips to connect the spaces. Yes! The wood chip piles were that thick. Nothing ever worked to kill the grasses, tried everything....but this method worked! Now seven years , and still grass free.
Where did you get your hat? Do they make them in really small sizes? I have a child size head and have been looking for a good quality sun or cowboy hat. Because my head is so small I’ve been having a hard time finding a good quality one!
