Visiting The Most Remote Village In Mainland Britain

- I visited the most remote village in mainland Britain. Located on a peninsula in the Scottish Highlands, the village of Inverie on the Knoydart Peninsula is known for its isolation.
There are no roads connecting Inverie to the rest of Scotland. The only way to reach this village is by hiking approximately 15 miles through the last wilderness of Britain or by taking a boat across 7 miles of sea. In the last video, I shared my experience of hiking in Knoydart to reach Inverie, one of the UK's most remote villages.
In this video, I explore this remote Scottish village which is community-owned by the Knoydart Foundation. I end my time in Inverie by visiting the Old Forge Pub, the most remote pub in the UK!

WHO AM I?
If we haven't met before... Hi, I'm Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!
P.S. Some of the links in this description are affiliate links that I get a kickback from.
A bonus 24-minute video walk-through of Inverie is available to watch over on my Patreon page: www.patreon.com/ruthaisling
On Patreon, I tend to share early access to the videos before they are posted here on TH-cam. I also share longer and uncut versions of some of my videos and occasional bonus videos! I usually film videos 4-6 weeks in advance but on Patreon you'll know what projects I'm working on weeks before I share the videos here on TH-cam.
You'll also get access to my Scotland Google Map which has 200+ pins of places I've visited and recommend in Scotland.
However you’d like to support the channel, whether through Patreon or by watching and subscribing on TH-cam, I’d like to thank you for supporting my work! ❤
Always well done
Hi Ruth: I am designating you as Scotland's Tourism and History Ambassador. I have learned more about your amazing Scotland through your wonderful videos than by watching any documentaries or reading any books. You are my one stop shopping for this beautiful place you call home. Be safe.
You hiked in to the village, 15 miles over rough terrain. 😮 Wow. Respect to you, my dear.
Thank you so much!
As I’m physically disabled (can’t walk for too long due to my kneecap being off center) and live in Tasmania, I’m living vicariously through you atm
Thank you for taking us there!♥
Thank you for watching Marian!
What beautiful scenery. Place looks like the perfect antidote to the chaotic times we live in.
It really is!
Watching from the White Mountains Arizona, USA. Great video and Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there.
Thanks for watching from Arizona! ❤️
@@ruthaisling And I'm watching from Tucson in Arizona where it will be 106F (41.1C) tomorrow. I'd love to be in the coolness of the Knoydart Peninsula having a beer. Thanks for sharing the adventure.
In 2018, I flew to Inverness and stayed in the village of Beauly. It was part of my research for a children’s storybook I wrote, about an eight-year-old boy called Westie who takes the train from Beauly and has different adventures. Beauly is famous for having the shortest platform in the UK. In 2021, I self-published the book. 😊
Alba go brea, san Gaelige na h'Eireann. The best time I ever had in my life was touring the highlands all on my own, pitching a tent wherever I wanted, bothering nobody. I love those lands so much.
Thanks for showing us that amazing place. Views are outstanding. The dog "buckets" are dog _beds_ btw.
Ruth is such a lovely lady ❤
Haha thanks! 😂

Never commented before .. but I should more often .. love your content .. highlight of my week
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! ❤️
Yes do! It helps channels so much! Ruth is fab, isn't she?
I like the idea of the little retirement blockhouse -- I could retire there and handle hanging out at the pub most days!!!!
You take us to the neatest places!
I won t forget this trip either.Beautiful.thanks a lot for sharing.double thumb up for the quality of the video.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you 🙏
Great video. Been to Knoydart twice, both times stayed on the campsite at Inverie. First time was in a heatwave, the second time was last October, waking up to the sounds of stags bellowing, the waves and oystercatchers calling. And late enough in the year to avoid the midges! Magic place. Hiked up sgurr coire chonnichean, the corbett that you see behind the campsite as well. The old forge has had a major upgrade as well, sometime last year. They didn't serve food before that, lots of venison dishes as expected, all absolutely superb.
There are two things we will always fight for: our own people and our land. That brief story of Knoydart very well sums it up and it might look like a "small fight" in the grand scheme of things but it also sums up what being human is and our fighting spirit. I live in a very far away country but I hope someday I can visit this land.
I hope you manage to do that!
@@ruthaisling Thank you Ms. Aisling, your videos are soothing balm for the soul. I hope you continue doing what you love for a very long time. Greetings from La Molina in Lima, Perú.
The colors are absolutely popping in this one! What a fantastic scenic location.
It’s so beautiful there! 😍
Ruth, you did such a great job showcasing this beautiful, remote place.
Thank you for the effort you put into “bringing us along”
You are so welcome! I loved the trip 😍
Smashing adventure, Ruth. This is how you make memories.
I loved it!
Ruth, this is one of my favorite videos. Inverie and the Knoydart Peninsula are very special places. Thanks for showing it to us.
They are special places indeed. I’m glad you enjoyed watching!
Thank you so much for taking us to Knowdart. Watching you walk round is almost as good as being there oneself. Im going to have another dram to get over the exertion.
🤣enjoy your dram 🥃
Hi from California. Scotland is such a beautiful country.
Another fantastic video Ruth!
What a wonderful and beautiful adventure.
You make me want to visit Scotland and explore.
You should visit!
Such an amazing video, thank you for sharing your travels
Happy to share them! Thank you 🙏
Wonderful. So much natural beauty.
What a beautiful morning! There's a lot more to Inverie than I expected, too. Might have to jump on the boat, next time I'n in Mallaig! Thanks for taking us along, Ruth!
The new modern day Tom Weir?
You are a ture Scot opening up the beauty of our land, history, culture and people. ❤🏴
I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos!
Watching your videos and I love them. I’ve been to Scotland some years ago (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Highlands) and next time, I will visit these beautiful islands and do trekking. Greetings from Brazil
You need to plan a visit!!
Thank you once again from South Africa. I shared your videos with my daughter and brother who are now back in Scotland. They are all keen hikers. They are delighted with the content. Many early immigrants to South Africa were a result of the clearances.
Scotland is so lovely. I would love to visit there as my heritage is strong. In the meantime, thank you so much for taking us along. It means the world to me. I love your videos. ✌️🙂❤️
Thank you so much! I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos.
This is fantastic, I'm seeing parts of Scotland I otherwise wouldn't never see.
I’m so pleased 😀
Hi Ruth, I guessed correctly! Thanks for another great film. You captured the place so well and brought some great memories flooding back. I have both walked and travelled by sea camping at the fabulous camp site, on the beach looking along the loch and seeing the sun go down over the Rum Cuillins.i had my morning coffee in exactly the same seat as you with that view. At 75 I’m unlikely to return, so many, many thanks.
Love a scenic walk with you x
Hello from North Port Fl.
I Love your Travels. So interesting. Your so Blessed
Thanks for watching from Florida!
Hi Ruth, I grew up in central Scotland and laterally lived in Glasgow, moved across to Australia approx 10 years ago and now live in New South Wales, which is great, can’t complain at all. I find myself getting occasional homesickness and searching for videos on TH-cam of Scotland. I discovered your channel a couple of months ago and I’ve got to say, it is fantastic! (I really look forward to your videos as they come out). Your videos are engaging, entertaining and you have a natural affinity connecting with the viewer. You deserve every compliment you get on your videos, they are superb! All the best from Oz, and can’t wait for your next trip, cheers!
Wow im blown away. what a beautiful peaceful place.. i did a lot of camping in scotland many years ago but did not know about this place Thank you for showing this village and breathtaking views ruth..
Glad you enjoyed it. It’s a beautiful place 😍
Hi Ruth another great video, many thanks for sharing with us your lovely experience.
Dear Ruth, I’ve only recently discovered your channel, but I’m completely captivated. It brings back so many fantastic memories of my travels around Scotland when I was young. I love your presentation and the detailed descriptions of the accommodation and facilities. Makes me want to return in the near future x
You need to return soon! Thank you for watching 😊
Oh Jesus! This was the nicest place I have seen you travel to. Nice landscapes really. Greetings from Sweden.
Hi Ruth the Scenery is gorgeous Beautiful Awesome , that cabin you stayed is beautiful Awesome Amazing 😊
Such a gorgeous area! The campsite and the bunkhouse look like wonderful places to stay.
A beautiful video as always Ruth! You have such a great way of taking us viewers along for the experience. Love the history you include too. ☺
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching 🙏
Ruth, you are walking on a paradise! So many great experiences!
What a beautiful place. I sometimes forget that remote places like this exist still have spent all my life in towns and cities. It is really good to see local communities like this coming together for the benefit of each other. Two fantastic videos. Looking forward to next week.
I've subscribed to many a you tube channel over the years but since I stumbled across your channel a few months ago I have to say this has to be right up there amongst the best I've seen.
Fantastic videos, wonderful voice overs, magical scenery. How you do all that you do on your own is unbelievable, mind boggling.
My grandfather was a scot and I've been to Scotland numerous times man and boy, the area I know best is around Oban on the west coast as he built a house on the side of Loch Etive, and we used to visit twice a year in the seventies eighties and nineties.
I don't go up as often as I'd like to these days because I live on the south coast of England, but Scotland will always be in my soul and your videos are reminders of what a wonderful place Scotland is.
Keep up your amazing work, and thanks.
Wow, Blue Bird weather! This has been on my list for years…., my luck I’d get regular Scottish weather, the kind where the wind pushes the rain up your jacket. 😅
What a beautiful place, parts of it reminded me a little of my own country of New Zealand. The fact that Inverie/Knoydart is isolated and has to be purposefully visited (as opposed to just passing through) also adds to its charm I think. In that it's so quiet and peaceful. Stunning scenery too...paradise on earth. 😊🌿🌼🌄
You’re right, it is stunning just like many parts of New Zealand! 😍
😀Greetings from Michigan! What a lovely video! I love learning about my ancestors homeland and you present it beautifully! Thank you Ruth!
Thank you! Always appreciate your lovely comments! ❤️
So cool, and awesome scenery.
Hello Ruth. Was so looking forward to this second part. So glad the old forge has been taken back by the community. I remember walking down those dark lanes back to the bunkhouse with head torches on after doing 2 Munro’s. Beautiful remote area. I used to love passing that house on the left that had fantastic views.
Stay safe and thanks again 🙏
a truly magnificent place.so beauty full.i hope you get to see an otter one day
Maybe one day! I will continue looking 👀
Another great video Ruth, really do enjoy them all, taking me to parts of my homeland I have never been, funny thing that went through my head was imagine buying new furniture for your home there and trying to get it delivered, one of many draw backs to be living a lovely quiet life.....look forward to the next video as always.....
Thank you for taking us to places some of us will never see (chronic heath in my case), fascinating and showing the best your country has to offer.
Wonderful video Ruth and congrats for making this great adventure from the start of the dead end road and back! This was a perfect Sunday night watch for me, to unwind, see more beautiful landscapes, hear your lovely voice and great commentary. Insights into current and historical aspects of the Knoydart area quite interesting. The visuals combined with your talks are strangely soothing. Alba gu bràth!
An excellent video , much appreciated.
Hi Ruth great video and and AMAZING scenery
スコットランドの美しい自然をありがとうございます。自然が主役で人は、最低限の手入れをしている感じですね。
It's like going on an adventure with you Ruth, And there's always something interesting to find along the path, like the sewing machine on the stump, the old tracker/tank thiny, Wow, and what's going on with the giant checker board, I even know what to expect from a water closet = [ thunderbox ] in the most remote town in Scotland 🙆♂️
I’m so pleased you enjoyed it!!
@@ruthaisling I really Did, Even though i live in Australia I've always felt my heart still roams free in the Highlands, And your videos bring that home for me, Thankyou 💜
That was a really interesting insight into a part of Scotland that I have not visited but is on my wish list of places to visit but it would be a boat crossing for me rather than the hike in. For such a remote place they have what looks like a vibrant community.
The boat journey is lovely!
@@ruthaisling My first West Coast ferry trip was out of Mallaig to Harris to scout out my transfer of work to The isle of Lewis so I can imagine what the crossing you had was like. I have been on those ferries and the water was like the colour of Absinthe liqueur it is such a beautiful part of the world and the drive from Fort William to Mallaig is my most favourite of all the roads in Scotland.
@@johnbrown3951 I totally agree, I love that drive too!
husband speaking age 81 Ruth, I was camping at our resort near the Canadian Boarder and using my wife's I-phone and found this video. I needed to
find your story on my PC so I could comment and give a very big LIKE. Thanks for the tired feet at the end of this hike.
Stunning area with a great bit of history.
Thanks so much for sharing this with us.
God bless Ruth . 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a smashin’ adventure and great videos too. Thanks for taking us along!
Thanks Lindsay!
What a stunningly beautiful destination to reach after your long hike, Ruth, with plenty of lovely scenery along the way. These two videos were a great joy to watch. Thank you so much for sharing them. It was very interesting to learn that the community have plans for that long lochside building as a seniors' housing project. Something for your old age perhaps? 🤔
Stunning!
Excellent video Ruth! Great accommodations for being in a fairly remote location and an inviting pub. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you! The bunkhouse was great!
Thank you Ruth for another great adventure!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hello from Michigan, USA - an exile from the UK! Thanks for all your wonderful videos, Ruth. There's so much to see in Scotland and I've not been back there for way too long. Looking forward to your next adventure. How come you are so lucky with the weather?
Thanks for watching in Michigan. I’m always on the lookout for a good weather window 🪟😆
Thank you Ruth for another fantastic Vlog / documentary.

Hi Ruth l have really enjoyed your video, I'm glad you had a great day to make your video, l have watched a couple of your videos and they were very good, so enjoy your other videos that you make, - keep safe on your journey's.
What a wonderful journey, breathtaking scenery. Thanks for sharing x
It is really breathtaking, especially the scenery during the hike!
Just caught up with this video after watching your Kinloch Hourn to Barrisdale video. This has taken me back to my first Knoydart visit, way back in May 1979 - boat from Mallaig via Inverie to the head of Loch Nevis, and several days staying in the former outdoor centre there, trying to bag some Munros. Although it was May, it was very wintry, snowflakes the size of saucers when we landed, and sadly lots of dead deer because of the unseasonal snow and cold. A hike over to Inverie and back, no Old Forge pub then unfortunately. But a tremendous expedition nevertheless, culminating in a massive hike back to Mallaig via Loch Morar. Great to find all these memories stimulated by your video, Ruth.
Your videos are exceptional! I love the way you show maps and inserts to assist in understanding where you are going. I have learned so much. The clarity and flow when you are speaking makes everything easy to understand and interesting. Thank you for all your hard work sharing Scotland with us.
Awesome, thank you! I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos.
Lovely, very interesting video.
What a lovely place. I love that community garden.
It really is!

Great Vid, informative and beautiful scenery.
A bucket list trip for me so absolutely fantastic to have my appetite whetted. Wondered how you knew how much the taxi cost in the first video!
Another wonderful video, Ruth. They are so professionally done. I especially like the aerial views from the drone and the maps you use to identify different locations. Ernie is such a faithful companion. He patiently waited for you to come back and get him.
Thanks so much! I’m glad you find the maps helpful. I always like seeing maps when I watch travel videos!
Really enjoyed your video Ruth ... interesting and informative. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you 🙏
Beautiful place and surrounding scenery. Thank you for taking us to Inverie on Knoydart...I enjoyed your video very much.😊

This has been a wonderful journey. The scenery is breathtaking but also interesting things to see along the way. Thanks as always.
Glad you enjoyed it! It was a great trip.
Thanks Ruth, I was in Inverie in April 97, canoed across from the adventure centre on Loch Nevis. Then hiked there via Sgurr Na Ciche a few days later, the weather was a little less clement!!
Oh wow! That sounds like an amazing trip.
This beautiful place is definitely on my list, thank you for a lovely video x
Glad you enjoyed it!
Such a stunning place and you were so lucky with the weather. It looks like heaven to me, I would love to live in a remote place like that. The people who live there must love it so much and it's fantastic how they all own it. Thank you Ruth for taking us with you.
And thank you for watching!
Such a wonderful area. Thank you for guiding me through beautiful scenery.

Thank you Sharon! I love hearing that feedback as it’s always my goal with the videos that people also feel like they are there too!
What a lovely video, thank you 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. Brings back memories of when I made the same trip in 1989.... the Munro is called Ladhar Bheinn (pronounced "Larven"), which I climbed en route to Inverie. The pub was much rougher back then....
The pub is lovely now. You need to revisit!
What an absolutely stunning place - fantastic video Ruth thank you x
Thank you for watching!!
Wow brilliant and amazing as always thank you Ruth .
Thanks again!
