I grew up in the 80s and these kind of riffs and melodies are ingrained in my brain forever. I always thought of them as easy to play until i learned on TH-cam in the past 10 years that the guys behind make up and silly clothes were actual guitar gods. All of them!

Exactly! Nowadays seems like most guitar players only know how to add strings to the guitars, find different ways to tune… All kind of different things other than learn to play with Melody. I can’t stand all the screamo music with just wall-to-wall CHUNKA CHUNKA CHUNKA guitar and lightning fast drums…. I have never ever heard one of those songs… not one, and walked away from it singing it or wanting to go back and listen to it again. I’m sorry, but I’m not sorry for saying this but when I hear it, I just can’t wait till it’s over. I’ll like melody… good rhythms that you could feel in your spirit man…

I've definitely heard this scale a lot when I was playing in the 80s L.A. metal scene and used it myself. I didn't really think much about this hybrid scale at the time, but this is a good lesson that takes it apart. There were a lot of things we players picked up from each other in those days but didn't really think about. But it's good to think about it and see what's going on there because that way it can be used to greater effect. The reason so many players were using minor keys in those days was because it was an easy way to make a song more dramatic. A lot of songs would even start out in major keys then switch to minor for the solo just to add more drama.

Awesome - the intro, and lesson. The first solo I learned properly was for Ozzy's Flying High Again, with of course, the late great Randy Rhoads. I was learning music theory at the same time, and noticed he was doing this. It's right after the repeating blues lick that starts the solo, and then he goes (in the key of F# minor): 15, 14, 12 on the high E string, followed by 15, 13, 12 on the B string, followed by 15, 14, 12 on the G string, and then he continues descending for a bit with pentatonic/blues scale notes. That's one thing that I loved about learning Randy's stuff... his relatively formulaic approach made it very easy to see what scales he was using. It was fantastic for a newly soloing player because I could easily tie it back to the theory behind it (unlike my other early hero, Van Halen... Ed was all over the place LOL). Okay, thanks for letting me geek out... later, Robert! :)

I love most genres of metal, thrash, black metal, melodic death metal, nwbhm etc. 80's hair bands are my go to! They just had a vibe that makes them stand out. If course it wasn't cool anymore in the nu-metal alternative world of the early 2000's. Thanks man!

O.K. Theres no easy way to say this so ill just say it. It seems to me that every time Robert Baker shows me a kick ass lesson,,theres another guy right behind him showing the same lesson (or close) not to mention any names but it rhymes with camaron cooper. Anybody else see this pattern???. Robert ? Your the shiznit. Keep on rockin it Brody.

Love the 80s videos! Robert your videos are really special. Last year your videos got me back into guitar playing after a long period of avoiding it. I also got married last year and got confident enough to play a song at my wedding to my wife with the wedding band. Played Def Leppard's Pour some sugar on me, not too complex, but i felt i had the confidence to go for it! Was an incredible day i'll never forget. Thanks for the inspiration and keep on rocking up my man!

This scale exists within the music theory, itself. It's an altered scale, and it's called Aeolian b5 or Locrian #2. It only ommits the Major 5th note.

I got to say, that your soloing for the 80's stuff has a lot of similarities to the awesome Harem Scarem guitarist, Peter Lesperance. You have your own style, but those solos on so many video, reminds me of how Peter does it.
you are BOTH great guitarists. I learn a lot from your videos.
Keep up the 80's lessons - love it.
if you can, great if you are able to do any cool Harem Scarem songs...

Two of the same note on different strings makes the scale sound right to me. It’s actually very useful once you start shredding, and it looks cool.

    • @dylanzrim1011

You will interact differently with both said notes also, so much so that many popular songs use both, sounding like two completely different notes

Hey duder! Really diggin the 80's greasy-groove thang!!! I'm guilty of the "G"-string thing (LMAO)
Having grown up in the 80's learning the licks of Rhoads, Lynch, Demartini, Jake E Lee & the rest - you really had to put in the woodshed time because there were so many "Iconic" (See how did that nod) players, that you really had to have your chops nice & sharp ready to shred metal shards of greasy-chewy melodic-rock swagger!!!
Duder YOU are the king of "Greasy-chewy Melodic-Rock Swagger" brother! Your note choices & phrasing are always perfect & the tone YOU have that comes through your music is impeccable! We would've RULED the Strip back in '85 my young brother! Keep doing the good stuff!!!!!!!!!!🤘😁🤘

I just had a revelation in my head. I can use any spot on the fret board! For some reason it sounds like I can’t find a wrong note for any shape. I know that’s not true in reality but theoretically because my ear hears the note Im in naturally I won’t hit the wrong note. I’ve always held back from playing a spot I wasn’t sure if when really I can go crazy and it all works. I love 80s rock
