Since Netflix's Avatar got renewed for seasons 2 and 3, I hope those storylines will get adapted ahead of the episodes like Headband or the Painted Lady. Zuko's date with May, Aang wondering the spirit world regaining his connection with the past avatars, Katara desperately trying to heal him and so on. You could make 2 solid episodes out of this.

However, there is a Katara actress that really needs to up her game but most of the time the writers are to blame for their silly dialogues. You can see that in the case of Gordon who's forced to stand in front of the camera and deliver exposition which is so uncomfortable for the actor. It's the same thing that happened to Star Wars prequels. Good actors were given poorly written script to to the point where every single line they delivered became a meme
Obviously the entire "you must live as a human in spite of being the soul of the entire planet to learn what love, happiness, sadness and pain means" was too complex to understand for people so we replaced that with a good female-voiced flying kite and a evil male-voiced flying kite. Yet somehow people like Korra. Also, that means what you say in the video with Yangchen is _not_ canon. The flying kites of good and evil are. The Avatar is not the soul of the planet that needs to live among them, the Avatar is a half-human half-good-nature-spirit hybrid.
The irony is that you explained it very well thus proving it’s not “too complex” Bryke changed it bc they wanted to assert control. And the avatar isn’t “half human”. The original lore is superior and I will continue to ignore Korea’s changes to the lore. And yes it’s still technically canon.
That simplistic concept of good vs evil is very abrahamic/western which really sticks out like a sore thumb in the eastern inspired culture of the franchise. LoK destroyed the avatar, the origins of bending and the spirit world

I actually wish the Zuko and Mai part wasn't canon because it doesn't make sense. Why would Zuko make such a huge sacrifice of betraying Iroh, to then just turn around the next day and not want to go home anyway? Also Mai teasing Zuko and making him fall in the fountain feels really out of character for her, and she doesn't seem like the type to enjoy putting down other people like Azula does.

There are graphic novels that are considered the main comics. They continue the story from Book 3’s ending. The creators, Michael and Bryan, were involved in the main ones so the most canon ones are those: The Promise, The Search, The Rift, Smoke and Shadow, North and South, and Imbalance. And the Korra comics too. Outside of the main comics, you have comics such as the ones shown in this video. The short comics show the events that took place in between episodes (it feels like filler and not all of it is canon). The Lost Adventures is a compilation of short comics. Some are written by the writers from the show and some aren’t. This video shows stories that are written by the show writers so these are definitely canon. 4:43 The Bridge comic takes place right after Book 2.
