I have an M13 that's been gathering dust in the closet for years. This past winter I decided to put it up for sale but I first decided to go online to figure out its sale value. I was figuring maybe $125. I found online that people were still loving this thing, so I decided to just play through it one more time. I realized two things - first, when it comes to time-based effects, no one cares or even can tell if the delay or reverb is coming from some higher-end pedal or something like the M13 in a live gig situation, at least for me who uses effects sparingly to just add a little texture to existing tone. I was even a bit disheartened because the M13 lo-res delay pedal sounded better than my Evantide delay pedal that I bought new for $250. The second thing I realized was that just because it's no longer the newest device on the market doesn't mean it's not worth using anymore. When was the last time anyone ever said, "That band last night would have sounded a lot better if the reverb the guitar player used wasn't from a ten year old amp modeler."? No one notices or cares. I decided I still love my M13. It may not be on my pedalboard and I will never use the distortions on it. But for all the great- sounding time-based pedals and other pedals (the noise gate works well) along with it's ease of use, I'll never get rid of it.

I've replaced my whole pedalboard with the HX Stomp.. no need to deal with annoying patch cables, grip tape, power supplies, carrying a big board around to gigs, needing a carry-case for the board...etc.. not to mention being able to replace an entire bass rig and acoustic rig..all in one. Toss it into my gig bag and go. I do prefer to use a real amp with it, but it's definitely a usable backup rig or travel/fly rig for me.

The effects in the M5 are not being updated anymore. WHile the HX One has all of the effects from the helix line, and will keep getting more over time. But perhaps the best reason for getting the HX One over the M5 is the foot switches. M-series footswitch are notorious for failing over time, and they are not ordinary switches. The switches on the HX One are much more standardized AND more robust. You might not have tried all of the Dynamic revers, but they are wonderful. Also, there are many other new effects that are really great. The M5 was killer for its day, but the HX One, even at $100-$150 more, is a cut above in almost every way.

    • @stapeld
      @stapeld 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Completely agree. Especially the foot switches. Also, playing live, the LCD display is hard to read unless you bend down and get really close due to tiny backlit screen. Love the sound but hard for me to use live anymore.

I own both the M5 and the HX One and without a doubt the HX One is more than worth the extra money.... the footprint, Flux and ability to run it in 4CM, not to mention a better midi integreation really makes it a killer swiss army knife for your pedalboard.... I really do like the M5, and it's served me well for many years, but if I had to pick one the HX one stays without a doubt

As a guitar teacher, the m5 was the pedal I recommended every pedal-beginner to start with. Every time a student asks for a certain type of pedal we try the digital one to see if he/she really likes it. Then we search for the right variant in the right price range of that pedal for the student.

Over time with their multi effects pedal, when they’re ready to upgrade and start building a pedal board if they so please, they will have a much better idea of what they’re looking for. To go out and buy all the different effects in single pedals even cheap ones is still going to be quite expensive.

I was lucky enough to get my M5 as a result of being on the beta test team for it. Found the Uni-VIbe program somewhat wanting, but there were LOTS of other interesting effects, well beyond the ordinary. One of the interesting things about the unit, and a great many other stereo pedals, is the opportunity for "re-processing". That is, the output of one channel can be fed, via a cable, to the input of the other channel, to be processed by the DSP all over again. It doesn't always yield something interesting in every case, but some duplicate effects sound really good, and different. Just keep in mind that levels have to be set judiciously, to avoid oscillation. My favorite is to use reverse delay and reprocess that. Many companies assume, quite rightly, that many players will feed such pedals a mono input signal, but *use* the stereo output. Because of this, the DSP often provides a modified form of the effect at the "alternate" output, to produce a stereo effect. Feeding reverse delay back to the other channel gets RE-reversed (i.e., made forward), but it gets combined with the reversed repeats of the first channel, so that the result is a combination of forwards and backwards delays. Plenty of surprises using other effects in a similar manner.

@@Helix-Man No. I would expect that a responsible company would beta-test their products with people who had nothing to do with the company, so as to get the most objective user views. I was also a beta tester for the Tone Core series of pedals. Ironically, because of cross-border customs issues (I'm in Canada, L6 is in California), the pedals they had sent me were held up at FedEx, and shipped back to L6. Jeorge "Mr. Huge" Tripps (then project manager at L6) felt bad about it, and later sent me a big box full of them. I never found out how I was recommended to be a beta-tester, but I gather it was via my long association with the DIYstompbox forum.

Philip I see you and I agree on the Line 6 OD's. However I also agree with the ones you mentioned. Line 6 or the HX family of effects are really good . Since I keep my pedalboard small I am kind of looking at the ToneX 1 but I can see the use for either the M5 or the Line 6 One.

My first rig was a Silver faced Fender Champ and a Pro Co Ratt pedal. I still like that combination.

I'm not sure if the M5 has the updated Reverbs and Pitch shifting effects which are both much better than what was previously available.

Hi Phil, can the HX One be used with an acoustic electric guitar.

If you play live, just get a Stomp or Quad Cortex. All the tones you need.

The idea of having a unit that you can sort of “preview” pedals before purchasing is worth the $150 cost right there.

I had an M13 and it was great! But I was foolish enough to sell it for new pedals and now I'm still trying to build out my pedalboard haha

M5 is criminally underrated and under priced on second hand market… which is a good thing actually for guitar players

I bought one (M5) after the last time I heard you talk about it. It was a good pedal but it crapped out after a year with no wear at all. Just sat on a shelf. Not giving them my money again.

The HX drives are a noticeable improvement but the M series is stilll totally usable. I regularly use both.

My M5 is the centre of my ambient and modulation sounds for my pedal board. Its the SAK of pedals

The m5 will never be off my board because at the very least it’s an excellent tuner. But man is it tons of fun when looking to experiment or find something new.

I gigged a lot with my helix using the ts9 and maxon sd9 models in the front of a solid state amp (randall kh80) and got some amazing tones and great fun.
    They fell and sound great.

None of the drive settings were impressive. That is because I prefer clean tube amps with a hint of overdrive.

Like to have something like this. Been looking for a modulation/delay/reverb pedal. But I need a pedal that has more than one pedal at a time.

Kiesel's Vader Series is likely the best headless bass out there, and that's at really any price level beyond really high end one-offs.

so Phil, I went back to watch the M5 pedal, and you used an Ibanez RG550, too bad you did not use the same guitar in reviewing the HX ONE. That would be the true test.

I have a Tonex, and I think it is amazing. I use it with a Fender Tone Master 10 FRFR speaker cabinet. Keep in mind it doesn't have any effects other than reverb. The tone library online is amazing.
