This version has a different quality, a sense of loneliness and fragility that, on the other is less pronounced. It gave a new life to this already classic, even being older. I love it!
First time to hear this. I knew Mick for a while when he was in the Frantic Elevators, then I went to Miami to work on cruise ships. It was on a ship that I first heard Simply Red's first album (which I bought on cassette).
That would have made a good background soundtrack for Pulp Fiction. That song would have been perfect to play when "Butch" was going to get his watch that was passed down from his great grandfather to his grandfather to his father and to "Captain Koons" ass and then Butch's hand....
Mick Hucknall was the lead singer of the punk band The Frantic Elevators (1977 - 1979). This was their last record and a drastic change from everything they did before. The band broke up after and Mick formed Simply Red in early 80's, rerecorded and rereleased this song.
The SR version is a classic, but this is more powerful through raw simplicity and with some polishing after the demo stage could have been a potential hit in its own right
This version isnt bad. This definitely shows the versatility of Mick, his voice pretty much sounds great with any genre it seems. Simply Red was great group. But the Simply Red Soul Version > Frantic Elevator Punk Version.
Does anyone know where I can find either an MP3 or hard copy CD of this version? Vinyl single is impossible to find and would love to have an audio version of this performance- jangle guitar performance is simply sublime. As good as old school Johnny Marr
Mick was the only member of Frantic Elevators who transitioned to Simply Red. Tony Bowers (bass) and Chris Joyce (drums) were previous members of the bands Durutti Column and Mothmen, Tim Kellett (brass and vocals) was also a previous member of Durutti Column, Fritz Mcintyre (keyboards and vocals) was a session musician.
Love this version. My brother in law was the drummer in this group. ❤️❤️ used to go travelling with them when they played. Miss them days
The acoustic version....as if they were on MTV Unplugged.
I bet it would sound very similar.....
I love this version. It's got that 60s garage vibe

This is the original.

it wasn't released until autumn '85 though
Simply Red's debut - Picture Book was released on October 1985.
Bella versione di questa già splendida canzone, la voce di Mick bellissima ❤❤❤

This sounds like Simply Red meets the Kinks!
yes!!!!

It´s such a garage sound, love it. And Mick`s voice is not punk at all, a truly soul man voice
Still prefer Simply Red's version, but this is very interesting. Love finding new-old ish! 😆
Beautiful
Feels like a Nirvana unplugged version. I love it. Simply Red version is still the ultimate for me
Perfect!
This is amazing.
It really is
Frantic Elevators is the first group where mick hucknall is
after in 1984 mick hucknall make a famous group named Simply Red
this could have been the perfect surf ballad!
The picture of him holding the gun in his mouth is very disturbing.
Legit feels tho
Welcome to the world of punk
Wish Mick Hucknall performed this version again in live and show the single cover in large frame LOL 😄
The SR version is a classic, but this is more powerful through raw simplicity and with some polishing after the demo stage could have been a potential hit in its own right
Lovely.
Simply Red are great, Mick Hucknall is a great singer and he sounds so much younger here. ✌️😁

Nowhere at Yet Another Different Millennium
Yeah Jordan Keuring sent me and I'm glad

Like a Surf Music version!
MUCH BETTER..VERSION...
IT HAS THAT ANALOG FEELING...
Great
Lee Rittenour helps out Mick Hucknall's Frantic Elevators.
They should have tuned the guitar (an unpopular thing to do at the time)
Innit terrible, but I am a stickler for tuning nowadays.
Si es más nostálgica con simply red, pero igual se escucha muy padre
Interestingly this reminds me heavily of 13th Floor Elevators... Wonder if that's in purpose.
glad you said that, cause i thought the same thing
I prefer this to the SR version
He sounds like a ten- year- old here.
There was a speed issue
Gorgeous! Even with the guitars out of tune.❤
Proprio bella
This version is even nicer than Simply Red's. Love it!
They're more or less the same band. But yeah, I kinda like it better too!
yeah I don't know about that.
FauxReal - apart from the bass player, the drummer and the guitar player, yes

It’s good but I miss the chorus
Wow
't is Soul; as good as it gets.
Some would refer to it as Blue-Eyed Soul, but that's just too many words.
Wena
I like this version better less production and more voice
That guitar has bad intonation or is out of tune.
I think bad intonation, some of it is ok. But it is painful for me.
