@@supercellex4D Well at least remove it from view as quickly as possible. Actually deleting the data from the servers can take a bit for multiple reasons, for one some places have laws requiring data be kept for so long after deletion, 2nd deleting a lot of data at once can put a very high load on the database & storage servers, 3rd even once your data is deleted from the live servers, most all services are always making backups & it could be a while till all those backups are cleared. What most of these companies do is when you delete something it's just putting a flag on it in the database that it's been deleted so it doesn't show for other users, then over time whenever they both legally & physically can, the data is removed.
I think that if someone in the EU sues Discord about this privacy thing, they will quickly run out of nonsense (as they say in my country). Discord is becoming more and more annoying to report or request data when it is a right, and more so in this era when they want to make Discord for all ages and sell themselves as a "safe" platform for minors when it is just another of the bunch that thinks in numbers .
They've already implemented an auto reply to any discord privacy tickets saying "these requests don't belong here", then they just redirect you to the general support prompt which just get ignored. What an absolute joke.

This channel is reserved for individuals who need clarification about our privacy policies or practices, beyond what it is available in our online resources. as a teenager, discord's 'teens should protect each other' is kinda ironic. Considering puberty and the need to make fun of others (which theres a lot of those), they will not protect it. They all would rather send your personal info (you sent to a person you trust but had a fight and they sent it to a bunch of other teenagers) to a server they own. You can honestly report it but with discord's issue with sorting reports, i doubt anything would happen lmao
Someone I knew who I also trusted just turned and blocked me, now me being in fear of my messages being revealed contacted discord. Guess what they said. "We suggest you do not send any personal information or any information you do not want misused to anyone on Discord." as if I didn't believe we were friends. Seriously, discord, what the hell?
lol thats awful, especially if they were someone you knew irl or for years, like... sometimes you just casually bring up stuff like that to people who were your friends at that time
The best way to encourage Discord to delete your messages is by coming together as a community and urging lawmakers to implement privacy protection legislation. Its absurd that we have to delve into coding to tackle privacy issues while companies disregard our requests for assistance. We should hold them responsible for these problems. Lets redirect that energy of cancel culture into something meaningful for a change.
Should be added alone that some people especially those who have had Discord longer may have said stuff that was unsavoury when they were younger or posted revealing information that could risk them in future.
bro I hate when I get harrassed on servers, and then banned so I become a laughing stock and I cant do anything about it. hear me out, if you get banned, your messages should get auto deleted.
Discord mods get an option to delete messages (up to 7 days before) while banning a user so it's not like discord has any problems with doing it. Really really should be a feature
As a person who studies law, if they do not delete the data as requested, they are violating the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Under GDPR, individuals have the right to access, obtain, modify, and delete their personal data. Failure to comply with these rights can result in legal consequences and penalties for non-compliance.
If I recall correctly, Reddit has a similar problem where your messages aren’t deleted when your account is shut down. It’s quite interesting to see how often social media websites refuse to let you delete your comments when you want to protect yourself.
I am on a lot of RP servers, so not deleting messages is pretty good for finding old messages from deleted posts... but, Tupperbox exists. Whos messages aren't deleted when you leave and seems to be on every discord RP server. I got suspended for this, made 60 tickets with "i want a human reaponse" and got nothing (from a message i said 6 years ago) dude you can literally get banned for calling someone stupid
The most dangerous is when they ask you "how much is a dozen?", or any other question the answer to which is a non-negative number less than 13, NEVER SAY THE NUMBER ALONE, because then they can easily edit it to "how old are you?", report your message and IT WILL PROVABLY WORK AND BAN YOU!

GDPR only applies to PII that they collect, GDPRs data request isn't a right it's a request. If they believe they need the data (for a necessary length of time), they can keep it. Discord messages do not always fall under GDPR. This is important because this usually translates to: if discord looks through all your messages, they can find the 1 message that falls outside of GDPR and deny your request - other companies have done this - Instead of refusing that part, they refuse the entire request.
There's many bots in this comment section. I think we should also have a moment of silence for the humans that have been turned into bots, whether by themselves or an external entity.
This is both good and bad, good in keeping our privacy and making sure that someone bad doesn't use info against you (unless they already screenshoted) and bad if a predator or someone who did something horrible deletes their account and deletes all their messages. If someone didn't take screenshots then it's like they were never groomed or harassed and no information about the predator from other servers or wherever in discord
This is a brillian Video and i love the Topic and Safty issiues. The show us that something needs to be done but i find it very sick that Discords Support is not Adding this feature. There should be a "Reset Account" button that deletes every trace of your account and lets you choose a new username, display name, etc, to let you start completely over, from a blank slate.
My only issue with mass deleting messages, is that it can also be used the other way around. Offenders can delete all their messages as a panic button, and leave the victim with no evidence.
Thats what I mean. I get the concern but this is something that, as helpful as it is to stop harassment, is also helpful in allowing the harassers to wipe all traces of their activity from existence and get away with it.
Mr. NTTS I’m first comment! I have been through the brain-rotting, ball-scraping process of deleting EVERY message I’ve ever sent. It took me about four days. This feature would have been LIFE CHANGING.
this is something we need for every TOS of every platform. Just keeping the info accessible to people who need it. Maybe create lists of things to watch out for in a service's TOS what might lead to conflicts (because they will, that's why they're there andif it crosses a moral line, businesses need to be held accountable, but that only works if people have acceess to that info without wasting hundreds of hours by themselves. United we stand, but alone we fall)
I lowkey wish that I knew this like 4-5 years ago when I left my groomer. I am happy tho that now minors DO have this resource now, I can sleep better at night now.
This is exactly what I was doing when on one game hosting service I got ignored for 3 months to delete my account until i bringed GDPR to the text and boom next time i see my account got actually deleted, GDPR is a life savior
Even though this video highlights a very important topic of protecting children or harassment victims, it's also a double-edged sword. The reason for this, is that a predator or other sort of criminals, will be able to delete all their messages; as in removing all the evidence that could be used against them.
discord generally keeps every message that is "deleted" so that they can save your data for their personal use. however i'm not sure whether the gdpr actually forces them to delete them permanently, though apparently since sometimes they don't even do it all, they might just lie to you and say they've been permanently deleted when actually it's just that the messages can't be seen through the API.
@@gairisiuil they have to delete the data, if there is no lawful other reason to store them. and if they just hide it, that could mean a big lawsuit from a Datenschutzbeauftragten/... in a European country, with high cost
If you want a quicker method, you can message discord that you are under the age of 18, even if you aren't, they LEGALLY have to delete all your messages due to COPPA (At least if you live in the US)
I think the number is 13, not 18... but then you'd have to pretend to be your parent/guardian or some shit, I don't think they're allowed to communicate even from there with somebody who claims to be underage.
WhatsApp's end to end encryption is laughable besides the fact it's been infected by Meta. Signal is way better. Signal also have a proven track record of storing very little identifiable info and the best the glowies get is is a registration time and last connection time.
also if a kid gets reported for underage and their account gets banned, and they have photos of themselves out there now they have no way to delete it all! because it just stays there forever! and now everyone can still see it and bad people can do whatever they want with them! chances are if it’s a kid they are not going to understand the process to delete all their messages and if you’re banned and can’t appeal you need to make a new account this means you won’t be able to do the request data thing anyways. The way i know it stays is because i was an underage kid on discord that got their account banned and i share a server with that account on my alt and EVERYTHING is still there and there is no way you can get rid of it all, it would be the same for dms too and every other server.
I've been looking for a potential solution to this due to my ex constantly sending people to harass me. Having this option will help, even if the harassment doesn't fully stop. Thank you, NTTS.
People are saying "oh you censored it yourself" Yeah cause if you don't TH-cam's comment moderation bot will block the comment from being sent. Smart people in this persons replies i swear.
I think its a good feature but it ultimately wont protect you from anything. Anyone who had malicious intentions towards you will have already screenshotted or saved whatever images you sent. Protecting yourself is first and foremost your own responsibility. Dont send compromising images of yourself to people you dont know, dont share account information, dont share locations. You should assume everyone you meet has ill intentions until they prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are fine. And if you're underage you shouldn't even be on discord honestly but that wont stop anyone.
Recently, I ended up a friendship in which the person were problematic and w little bit toxic and I had shown photos of myself, videos and etc. and I needed to delete these messages for my own protection, but unfortunately discord does not have this option :((
You should try to do what NTTS did in the video with asking Discord to comply with GDHR laws. It will be a struggle to get them to care, but you have to be persistent.
I mean on the topic of bad actors can abuse this. Discord can just hide and archive all messages when you request deletion, that way they can't be viewed except if gov authorities request. Should still get perma wiped after a year or so tho imo.
Well they need something to share with Tencent dont they? 5:14 They realize you can delete all messesages manually so they can technical disappear in bulk because there is no cooldoown or smth? it is indeed bs
There is a cooldown/rate limit that kicks in after 500 manual message deletions. After that, you're stuck until it allows you to delete more, but it'll keep you limited severely. We're talking like, maybe a hundred every five minutes if you're lucky.
I was cyberstalked for an entire year after deleting my discord account thinking that my messages would be deleted. Even to this day, I'm scared knowing that personal information I shared when I was 13 is still out here
11:09 i love threatening big companies with eu law, the amazing thing is that you can use that to youre advantage on a lot of things. like on tiktok where the support team doesnt care about a comment telling someone to do something bad to themselves untill you threaten tik tok with the european law. love it
Idea: Have all private info blocked when you delete your account so you don’t have to delete all your messages. Does not solve all the problems, but at least it helps.
And how do you think Discord can understand what part of each of your messages is "private info"? That's where the problem lies, in the message *content* !
me when i have to quite literally threaten massive legal action to convince the poor employee to delete one minor spelling mistake from my history (along with actually important stuff like my home address in public)
It was annoying to me as well. I remember when I created my own server, I used channels to exchange private messages (one channel per person). And used a moderator bot along with my scripts to delete all messages in that channel when needed. When someone needed to message me in private, I would invite them to the server, create an exclusive channel, and shared the command with them to delete the chat history (so either of us could delete all messages when needed). This is no longer necessary, as Telegram provides this functionality and more.
@@lussor1 Well yeah, advertising especially. And people forget, its not deletable for other reasons, such as investigations, thankfully. Some privacy is good but there's a reason why its not gone.
Except Discord is infamous for being unable to report a message with channel and message ID, even before it's deleted, if it gets deleted afterwards...
Images and video files will get corrupted over time (unless if it was in a small file). Unless if someone had managed to fix the corruption. But I ultimately believe that the only reason why discord is being allowed this is because of the governments (mainly in the US) had not bothered stopping them. At this point if you want it to be "permanently fixed", you would be better off contacting your local representative and pester them long enough for them to take action.
Why is Discord even a thing still? it's obviously really dangerous since the majority of it's users are teenagers, the only reason I still have my account is that everyone just seems to have it and only ever wants to talk on it
The law REQUIRES them to allow deletion of personal data, not the other way around. It's purely them not wanting to, probably because they don't wanna lose the opportunity to sell massive amount of user messages to AI companies for big money
although i genuinely believe this should be added, couldn't bulk deletion potentially be exploited by harmful people to rid proof of harmful/criminal actions? screenshots, screen recordings and archiving can sure deal with that i suppose, but not if someone's quick enough to cover up their tracks before they're caught sharing/in possession of illegal content or committing harassment, specially if their victim is young and not fast enough to gather proof (or, alternatively, they were surrounded by a community that got caught and saved their skin before they could be tracked) deleting all ur messages and anonymizing your account can be an effective way of covering things and escaping punishment, so i wonder how that could be managed (since having bulk deletion under review would equal to absolutely fuck1ng nothing)
Just to take the other side for a second, why is it discord’s job to fix a problem you created? Discord and literally every other online site that has the capability of sending messages to others ALWAYS tell you to NEVER send your personal information over them. It’s internet safety 101. Those things you want deleted should never have been sent to begin with. Just because you trust the person you’re messaging doesn’t mean you shouldn’t listen to discord when they say not to do it. It’s like a teacher telling you not to run in the halls at school, you decide to do it anyway, then you hit your head against a wall and complain to the teacher that they need to put giant foam pads against the walls so it won’t happen again. The person who is best at protecting your privacy is yourself. If you yourself wave away that privacy, that’s on you.
Because nobody wants to stop and think of the consequences of their actions before they do them. Its always "do now, worry later". Somehow we've forgotten the significance of the things we put online potentially being there forever. I don't think this means Discord should do nothing at all, but if people don't stop sending personal details online, anything Discord does won't matter because the abusers will just save the incriminating info some other way.
im glad they don't delete the messages, they have come in handy for a couple times when some psycho that sent me some crazy stuff deleted their account.
7:37 "doesn't matter where you live" discord technically only has to delete the messages if the account is used by someone in eu or usa or another country that has both good laws and many discord users.
Bro that actually hits so hard....that day I was in a rly big server +100k members....but then I felt uncomfortable and wanted to leave....also wanted my messages deleted....but since there is a command in most bots to delete all messages from a user...I begged the admins to delete them...but they said its against the rules of the server...even tho obviously that wasn't in the list of rules and just bullshit yett now I can force them to delete ....so thx mate XD
You've drawn unnecessary attention to yourself. You should've deleted them yourself with either the technically-against-the-ToS method, or the mentioned GDPR compliance one.
Hey programmer here, I don’t know how discords internal system are. I just know that it would be difficult to make a delete all messages system, giving the amount of POSTS and GET requests that would likely require to grab all the users messages and delete them. But also, scamming would be easier (including self promotion) as after the user has fallen for it, they can delete all messages.

What an absolute joke.

as a teenager, discord's 'teens should protect each other' is kinda ironic.
Plus teenagers are dumb they will do anything that makes them regret when theyre on their 20s

If I recall correctly, Reddit has a similar problem where your messages aren’t deleted when your account is shut down. It’s quite interesting to see how often social media websites refuse to let you delete your comments when you want to protect yourself.
Actually, your Reddit DMs (not group chats I think) are! Or at least they are made inaccessible. What is not deleted is posts and comments.

I am on a lot of RP servers, so not deleting messages is pretty good for finding old messages from deleted posts... but, Tupperbox exists. Whos messages aren't deleted when you leave and seems to be on every discord RP server.
But that's like the one good thing about not deleting messages I can think of and it shoulden't be used as an excuse to compromise safety online.

If someone didn't take screenshots then it's like they were never groomed or harassed and no information about the predator from other servers or wherever in discord
if we had a "delete all" button, bots which track deleted messages would just track them all

There should be a "Reset Account" button that deletes every trace of your account and lets you choose a new username, display name, etc, to let you start completely over, from a blank slate.
Soooo telegram will let you delete entire conversations, but discord needs to be threatened to let you delete your messages in bulk? Classic discord L
My only issue with mass deleting messages, is that it can also be used the other way around. Offenders can delete all their messages as a panic button, and leave the victim with no evidence.
Well.. considering MOST of our predatory exposes of youtubers have relied MAINLY on discord logs.... this is a seriously mixed bag...
This feature would have been LIFE CHANGING.
if only there was a law that allows you to delete your past, oh wait "Right to be forgotten" is a thing
this is something we need for every TOS of every platform.

Even though this video highlights a very important topic of protecting children or harassment victims, it's also a double-edged sword. The reason for this, is that a predator or other sort of criminals, will be able to delete all their messages; as in removing all the evidence that could be used against them.
But the method requires you to request your data from discord, aren't they gonna check it out and ban them?
@@Aiden-iy9du nah discord gives 0 shits
@@Aiden-iy9duhow when the data is deleted? if it is reported before, then yes, you can store it, but not without that
discord generally keeps every message that is "deleted" so that they can save your data for their personal use. however i'm not sure whether the gdpr actually forces them to delete them permanently, though apparently since sometimes they don't even do it all, they might just lie to you and say they've been permanently deleted when actually it's just that the messages can't be seen through the API.
@@gairisiuil they have to delete the data, if there is no lawful other reason to store them.

If you want a quicker method, you can message discord that you are under the age of 18, even if you aren't, they LEGALLY have to delete all your messages due to COPPA (At least if you live in the US)
US consumer protection along with COPPA is a joke, they will simply delete your account

also if a kid gets reported for underage and their account gets banned, and they have photos of themselves out there now they have no way to delete it all! because it just stays there forever! and now everyone can still see it and bad people can do whatever they want with them! chances are if it’s a kid they are not going to understand the process to delete all their messages and if you’re banned and can’t appeal you need to make a new account this means you won’t be able to do the request data thing anyways. The way i know it stays is because i was an underage kid on discord that got their account banned and i share a server with that account on my alt and EVERYTHING is still there and there is no way you can get rid of it all, it would be the same for dms too and every other server.

Idea: Have all private info blocked when you delete your account so you don’t have to delete all your messages. Does not solve all the problems, but at least it helps.
And how do you think Discord can understand what part of each of your messages is "private info"? That's where the problem lies, in the message *content* !

Yeah no lets move to Roblo- I mean Guilded.
6:47 Most likely discord also keeps the messages in the databases and only hides the messages from the discord interface.
Makes sense, especially with law enforcement requests.

"Images and video files will get corrupted over time"??? We're not talking about negatives stored directly under the sun here...
The corruption is fixed, because all the stored data has redundancy and error checking.
Discord is just going crazy every seconds-
It's insane that there is no feature like that, also was annoyed by that multiple times....
Why is Discord even a thing still? it's obviously really dangerous since the majority of it's users are teenagers, the only reason I still have my account is that everyone just seems to have it and only ever wants to talk on it

This feature seriously needs added. Also, it is not okay to make fun of people.
im convinced they cant do it either because of internal bullshit or because of government bullshit
Its money.
Deleting every message=less advertiser info
The law REQUIRES them to allow deletion of personal data, not the other way around. It's purely them not wanting to, probably because they don't wanna lose the opportunity to sell massive amount of user messages to AI companies for big money
although i genuinely believe this should be added, couldn't bulk deletion potentially be exploited by harmful people to rid proof of harmful/criminal actions? screenshots, screen recordings and archiving can sure deal with that i suppose, but not if someone's quick enough to cover up their tracks before they're caught sharing/in possession of illegal content or committing harassment, specially if their victim is young and not fast enough to gather proof (or, alternatively, they were surrounded by a community that got caught and saved their skin before they could be tracked)
deleting all ur messages and anonymizing your account can be an effective way of covering things and escaping punishment, so i wonder how that could be managed (since having bulk deletion under review would equal to absolutely fuck1ng nothing)
They'll make this a Nitro-Feature!
I know it!

I’m exciting to see your about to hit 1million followers 🎉🎉
