  • Engraving a brass practice plate.
Engraving is done with the Lindsay Classic incorporating the Pat. Lindsay Point. Video shows primary cuts, background removal, texturing the relieved background and the final detail engraving of the leaves and stems.

I have never seen anything like this. To say I am in awe is quite an understatement. I am studying beginning silversmithing and this just blows me away. Thank you for such an inspiring video.

Belt buckles are fun to do....
Mostly lots of canvas (space)...flat and easy to work on. I have done allot of belt buckles and love the challenge.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Let me know if I can help.

Thank you Jim for your time, I always see beautiful works of art, but never knew how they shadowed them. One day I would like to get into doing this, but the tools are quite pricey. So I guess I'll have to save up. Oh and thanks for not making fun of the way I spelled chemical. sometimes my fingers get ahead of my brain, they say it has something to do with age..

    Conphilips.....
Yes...the square graver is the one graver I use most of the time. The flat graver is more like a chisel. I use different sizes...narrow for fine work and broad points for bright cuts and script. The heal is very important too.....wide narrow fine and so on.
Try to experiment with different sizes and pick the one you like.
    Thanks for the question

The white material is a Chinese White available at most art supply stores. You use a little water wipe on a thin coat with your finger...let dry and do your drawing. For the most part I use blue magic marker and lightly scribe the design and then engrave. If you get the Chinese White on two thick it has a tendency to crack and peal off. Thanks for the question.

    Farce....
If the cast Iron is of good quality...no casting fisuers...it can be engraved. Cast iron is fairly
soft so it should not be hard to cut.
    33Ohms
Not to hard to engrave on cylinders....of course, that depends on the diameter....larger, easier
smaller, harder. Thanks to both of you for asking.

  • @818small

    Durbans....
There are a number of ways to darken the background on metals:
With steel, brass, and nickle silver you can use a cold blueing solution or you can use
paint....some engravers use a bake on laquer others use the blacking solution used in the jewelery industry. On this particular project practice plate I used a magic marker....simply because it was quicker. Magic marker will not last as long as the aformentioned procedures.

  • @818small
    @818small  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Carlos....
I am using the Lindsay 120 degree Patented Parallel Point....
This works good for me. Some engravers use a 90 point.
    Thanks for the note....good luck,
    Jim

I use carboloy or carbide gravers and sometime use highspeed tool steel.
I find that the carbide gravers last longer when working on some of the harder stainless steel in both knives and firearms. I also use the Lindsay Palm Control as the working hand piece for all or most of my engraving....you can google Lindsay Palm Control and find more details.
    Thanks

    Lester,
For the purpose of this video I used a magic marker. Normally I use a blacking solution from Gueswine ( Jewerly Company ) to blacken the background. On brass as shown in the demo you can use cold blue and the lightly sand the surface. Browinells ( Firearms Supply ) sells a flat black bake on laquer it works well and once baked will not come off even with solvents. All engravers are waiting to see if someone will come up with something that will work on stainless steel
    Hope this works

    Skittlekiller...
I blackened the background with a Sharpie. Later I will use a different process to blacken the background. The Sharpie lends a little depth to the project so you and others can see the process of detail engraving to the finished product. I think I explained the blacking process in some other posts on this sight or in the video.
    Anyway....thanks

beautiful. I've always loved the tone of brass. It's amazing that that entire piece was just larger than your fingertip. What kinds of things are you commissioned to engrave? It's always seemed like a pretty mysterious profession, a true art.

I practice alot. I practice to help me understand the different styles of engraving. This is just one style and for me fairly easy to do. There is another video on TH-cam with a different style and a little more complex than the one showing....I invite you to take a look at it. If I had more time to do videos I would have more on here. I will try to get more produced in the future. Thank you for your interest!

Tools are never 'too expensive'. Some just take longer to pay for.
Notice that used engraving tools are nearly impossible to find. That means those that are sold bring high prices without advertizing.
If you can't do it, you can always sell the kit.
See. It's easy to justify tools for doing most anything.

Just like Choras Den said where did the black come from???? could you please explain. Because if you want to show shadow this would be the only way how. Is it a comical like gun bluing, or some kind of stain that won't come off?

How do you make the punch tool? Or if it has not been modified, do you have a link to the punch? I've tried the punch technique and I get more of a stippling effect instead of a smoothing effect.

    • @jimsmall1580
      @jimsmall1580 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Take your stippling tool and flaten the sharp end. Take the tool and move it across the removed background. A little tip...instead of using a rounded point...make a square or triangular point. This will allow you to get up into those really tight V angles. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.
      Thanks for the question....
