How to Accept Yourself in a World Striving for Perfection | Haemin Sunim | Talks at Google

- One of the world’s most prominent Buddhist monks, Haemin Sunim, joined us at Google in London to talk about self-care, discussing that only by accepting yourself - and the flaws which make you who you are - can you have compassionate and fulfilling relationships at home and work.
About the book
No one is perfect. But that doesn't stop us from imagining ourselves smarter, funnier, richer, or thinner, and how much happier we would then be. Love for Imperfect Things shows how the path to happiness and peace of mind includes not only strong relationships with others, but also letting go of worries about ourselves. With chapters on self-compassion, relationships, empathy, courage, family, healing, our true nature, and acceptance, as well as beautiful full-colour illustrations, Love for Imperfect Things is a much-needed guide for learning to love ourselves - imperfections and all.
In this beautiful follow-up to his international bestseller The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down, Buddhist monk Haemin Sunim turns his trademark wisdom and kindness to self-care, arguing that only by accepting yourself - and the flaws which make you who you are - can you have compassionate and fulfilling relationships with your partner, family and friends.
HAEMIN SUNIM is one of the most influential Zen Buddhist teachers and writers in the world. Born in South Korea and educated at Berkeley, Harvard, and Princeton, he received formal monastic training in Korea and taught Buddhism at Hampshire College in Massachusetts. He is one of the most influential monks in the world, with 1.8 million followers on Twitter (@haeminsunim), Facebook and Instagram. Haemin lives in Seoul when not traveling to share his teachings. In Korea, The Things You Can See sold more than three million copies and spent 41 weeks at number one.

A flower doesn’t ask why it’s in the world ,and neither should you. Being human should be enough, everything else is gravy.
his clothes look so comfortable.

What a wonderful interviewer! She asks important questions, then steps out of the way for the teacher to answer. And what a teacher!! My thanks for this talk.
My first impression was one of admiration for the lady interviewing the monk. Her humility and great awareness enabled her to ask the right questions with the necessary respect and love. The monk is cheerful and has great wisdom and is so generous in sharing. Radhakrishnan of the Yo-LAB
I bought your book.
The reason I bought your book was that I parted the book down the middle, which I do with all the books I buy, but yours was full of wisdom. I don't remember the quote that made me buy your book but I remember one of them, which stated," those who have not realized their true self live like the blind...".
I was very depressed the day I went to the book store but the more I read it, the more I found myself sharing it with others. So this must mean something...
One of the most motivational master.
Love his stories and scenarios written in his books
I learned and realised a lot of minor things that could cause a big impact in my life or everyday basis that I didn’t aware before.
I am very thankful to him and his books
Such a humble and helpful master
I found him as a person to stop me up from saying yes yes
Thank you
@@dalinung279 i see.
I can feel your peaceful energy when you're talking with us. Thanks Master so much 🙏🙏🙏

I love the way he say about mindfulness and childlike approach. Enjoyed and realized that we are so much idolized about spirituality.
Things you can see only when you slow down is my life changer. I have been a buddhist from my birth but it's this book actually pave the path for me to use buddhist philosophy in real life. I'm forever greatful for you for writing this book😇
A serendipitous find on my TH-cam newsfeed. I appreciate this interview so much, and I am so grateful to have stumbled on Haemin Sunim's knowledge and wisdom.
This came at the right time in my life :) Thank you for sharing!
Thank you
After listening to the words of Monk Hyemin through TH-cam, I received many enlightenments and discounts. In 2017, when I briefly followed you on Facebook, I was grateful and happy that you responded directly. mercy and love 💜
Striving for perfection is the journey for discovery, step by step, climb, lateral, horizontal, comparisons ,self similar patterns of imagery, neurons switcing on-of at random ,network of nodes, archiving for recall.Never ending consciousness, duality of dreams," ...have been here before, where ever my body-soul choose to be..."

What a nice, spiritual, and genuinely happy person. I learned a lot today from this interview. Thank you so much Mr. Sunim. By the way, the interviewer did a wonderful job also. Thanks to you both! :)
When that audience ask how to focus on present if it sucks, he basically answered, just to ignore the problems.
His book Things you can see only when you slow down was a wonderful read.. His thoughts are so compelling!
The amount of YOU KNOW is perfectly unlimited. I wish he speaks in Korean.
To make a nice comment is a really beautiful action, bless you all. Spreading peace and love and gratitude, like this magical human being, brings joy to our worlds xxx
Awareness of the imperfections of ourselves is the key.

So, you are saying businesses people are good people, right? That's total garbage mind. It's 21 century. He is believing in Buddhism and emphasizes 'Awareness of human beings and the universe'. He has a good car, house and money. What's wrong with that? Did he steal those things from you or other people? There are monks who meditate in secret mountains with minimal uses. And there are monks who live in the centre of crowds and help people to cope with their realities.
Which monks are practically better for people?
Do not judge others by your tiny uneducated mind!
These are beautiful words particularly on awareness and self awareness. Thank you ✨🌠
A lot of wisdom here...if we are aware enough to understand the words that were spoken.
Hahaha, my head is just turning around when Haemin explains about aware of awareness ;)) It does require constant practices
This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks a million! 🌈
🙏Sunim, thank you so much for the teaching!
Great talk - Google should be proud of this opportunity.
Thank you Haemin sunim. Greetings from Canada.
Thanks a lot for sharing. Really an inspirational talk.
respected young Master, very nourished and impressed on your small introduction and
i ll surely listen you much more......🙏❤️
I really love these Talks at Google. Thank you so much.
The concept of stalking,
what is it that triggers the stalker to stalk, a particular person,
is it the Physical Appearance of the Person's Body, Speech, Voice, Life, Lifestyle, Beauty, Skin, Color, Food, Money, Wealth, Just Spying on others, Possessiveness, Control...and many more.
What are they essentially looking for from the Person, whom they are stalking !?
Our worldly ecosystem, will be safe and secure, if we actually start taking initiatives to embrace them collectively in a Forum.
His robe is very cosyyy
Thank you so much wise man
What a perfect duo - great interview 👏
Thank you sunim
This is really an amazing video, thank you so much for sharing! I wish this video had accepted "Add Translations", then I could've translated this to Japanese, his words would surely help many people.
@7.45 life is not "Good or Great", life is a Demand. It is a Coercion, it is a Twisting to Suit itself... One that I didn't ask to have Forced upon me. Life is Suffering! In fact that is pretty much all life is.
Great session. Thanks for posting.
thank you the master
I love him it just drama this whole thing 🙏🏻
haha yeah, i prefer to skip the drama :D
Superb sir thanks for helping to cope up with real life difficult
Moral of the story - Focus more on the present moment
You nailed it. Here and now. :)
Who has had the experience of expressing to someone how you really feel, profound grief to the point of self pity for example, and then been shunned?
Same here.
Katherene - I take the advice of Brene Brown, she said that people have to earn the right to hear your story. This, for me, includes Grief. I am not a Dharma teacher or a therapist, but I am a meditator... I recently used my practice and a short trip to a monastery to self-heal. It helped tremendously. So, I just want to share that I made my own place to heal myself and did not expose myself to people who would shun me or simply not understand. Sending Smiles.
@@rmsnyc2011 well she has a pretty good business going which is very important probably more important than anything else in our materialistic culture so undoubtedly she knows something however there is something to be said about bearing witness to another human being because we're human beings
Yes
When do you suppose human beings will just start being human beings in our culture and start actually give up consumption and materialism and stop self-aggrandizing and put our money where our pretentious ideas are and actually do something rather than sitting around talking about it and patting ourselves on the back
I'm so proud of you Sir Haemin
Thank you
Respect 🙏 🙏🙏
This was such a great interview.
Thank you.
Great talk, thanks!
Absolutely wonderful 🙏🏾
Thank you.
Key to Success: 11:40 Can we remember the last time when we were peaceful and happy?
What if you can't?
Canardeur I'll bite. I'm not a monk but don't think one has to be to seek happiness. This has to be a universal value. For the person asking such a question, I'd put thought into what makes one happy and build move modify improve their life to experience more of that. Subjectively, bringing a smile to someone's face be it a family or friend even a random stranger can make me happy. Doesn't take much effort.
Just experiencing life without constant judgement and identification is what I am trying. Who knows what I will feel from the experience but let it happen and just be.

Oh master!
Superb interview.
I convey Love & Respect to Haemin 스님.
Master??? LOL!!! I know Bong very well, he is anything but a master of Chogye Dharma.
Ah, this reminds me regarding the 'Skip Level Managers' in an organisation and corporate culture 😊
Thank you.
I love you so much ♥️♥️♥️♥️
If the Buddha had never strived for perfection he would never have become a Buddha. If he had said to himself, “oh well I’m imperfect,I’ve got these faults I should just accept them and not try to do better” he would have not discovered that there is actually a way to reach perfection that goes beyond all suffering and stress. The Buddhist path starts not with accepting one’s faults but with actually recognising that your current situation is not ideal but that you have the ability to change that yourself. That ability starts, with a recognition that your actions (kamma) matter and have consequences for you personally.

That was a very helpful interview, with very practical advice. Thank you!

I haven't gotten around to listening to his speech, so please don't take this as me trying to detract from his talk... But does anyone know if there is a name for the type of hat that he is wearing? Or where I can find one? Thanks!
Idk where you like, but one idea is to take a screenshot of him in the hat and take it to a Nepalese or Tibetan shop and ask if they have any thick knit hats like that.
*I meant, idk where you

@@rmsnyc2011 Thanks, great idea :)
It seems like it's hand-knitted and it might have been given to him as a gift from his readers, I guess.

What is a serial killer becomes a monk. Would we be able to listen to him/her in the same way as we would listen to a random monk talk? Can the world accept somebody from unacceptable background preaching us profoundities?
YEP!
I'm having a hard time. Please pray that I won't give up. I don't want to kill myself
practice meditation it saves you
Where do you work..
What's all this silliness about the "imperfect"?
a young person with little life experience lacks the efficacy and context to share wisdom.
Denpok Singh?
well..........
Rule of thumb: if someone says he is enlighten then he is not, stream entrée? Maybe. There are like same number of billionaire as enlighten arhants (enlighten). So how often did you met a billionaire, also enlighten beings don't brag about it?

This guy isn't real monk. He never tried to be great monk or philosopher. He just want to be celeb.
Before I thought that he was unique monk who communicate with people through internet.
But you know he got a 500K USD mansion in NY.
Can you believe this?
I can!
Excuse for my ignorance but I do want to ask this if monk allow to have sex? Or eat like normal people?

영어로 말하니깐 한국어로 말할때 보단 덜 오일리하네....
댓글 영어로 좀 하시죠?
