    Jon, this was one of my favorite videos you've made. I hope you continue to do more of these such as proper foot position when riding ramps, how to properly slide out of a ramp, etc.
    Keep up the great work!

    Love your videos Jon, your enthusiasm is infectious. Style doesn't get considered nearly enough with new (older) skaters these days. Bringing it up at a session doesn't do you any favours with popularity either but, it matters! We (the middle aged men who never stopped skating since pre-teens) wore vhs tapes out watching pro's and trying to emulate them (in every way, as kids do) and that just doesn't happen now. A skate school with an ex-pro is useful no doubt but just as important is a healthy diet of youtube skate vids. I'm biased because it was my era but I'd recommend going back to the old bones and santa cruz vids now widely available on yt and watching them regularly. I mean really watching them, not like the way we swipe through hours of insta feed videos barley taking it in. Soak in the style and form by osmosis. A big trick-bag is cool and all, but a 'basic' trick done with style wins every time. Looking forward to your next upload Jon, rock on dude.

    • @JonBishopSkate
      @JonBishopSkate  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many thanks for the input dude!
      Yeah love all those vids, I think watching Dog Town and Z Boys was one of the main reasons I started skating and one of the key considerations for those dudes was style. I had no idea how to work on it, without it being awkward and contrived, but the idea of learning better technique has helped me to relax and I recon that being relaxed looks much better generally? Gonna go and have another closer look at the form on those old vids !!

    • @halloween-bh6pd
      @halloween-bh6pd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JonBishopSkate you hit the nail on the head Jon, it is contrived, but here's the thing - when you're a nipper / teen it's ok and accepted and almost expected to try look cool when doing something as style influenced as skating or surfing. As british adults it's very much outside the comfort zone acting that way but screw it, you're brave enough to pick up a board and get stuck in so you might as well look good doing it! All the good skaters look effortless when they roll, no matter how hard or easy the trick, and that deceives the viewer but its exactly what you're talking about when you say that being relaxed looks much better. Anyway, keep doing what you're doing bud, it's awesome.

  •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video and I love that you re-visit the basics! My drop in is also not very good so I'm in the process of improving it right now. I'm watching how the vert skaters do it, since I want to be able to drop in on higher and steeper ramps without killing myself. One thing I notice that the vert skaters do is bending the legs a lot and letting the butt drop down really low. But also folding their upper body forwards more so that the chest almost touches the knees :-O Another thing I have noticed them doing is starting with the front foot rotated 45 degrees - as you did in your video - and then rotate the hip and butt out and "into the ramp". This rotation also rotates the front foot so that it points toeside instead of 45 degrees towards the nose. Sounds good and easy in theory, but I haven't tested it in the skatepark yet :)

    • @JonBishopSkate

    I think we may have opposite problems, when I'm riding ramps I always have my body weight WELL inside it makes for fast slash grinds but that's about it. I feel like my body is at 45 degrees to the deck!

  • @mattstanbridge
    @mattstanbridge 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    A more flowing relaxed looking style comes with time I think. We can force it a bit which helps get there, but mostly it comes with time and an awareness of it (style). All the things you mention in the video get ironed out the longer you skate. Some people get there quicker, they're the naturals but most of us take a good 5 years or more. Younger people seem better at acquiring style quicker in my opinion, maybe it's something to do with being so self conscious.

    • @JonBishopSkate
      @JonBishopSkate  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree dude. I think being super relaxed looks good. Any tension can make for unusual body shapes. As you say that relaxation comes from conference which in turn comes from experience and time on the board ?!!

    Great idea to go back and work on your already established tricks , I think we’re all guilty of once learning something sticking with that way forevermore . I have some slightly unconventional ways of doing some stuff such my 5050 cross lock being the total opposite to most people (front foot heel wheel against the coping and back foot toe wheel) which doesn’t help with learning things like 5/0’s , I also thought I was well established with my drop ins until I started on the vert, they are flipping awful on that 🤣 further work definitely required ! Keep up the good work 👊🏼

    Style is important as anything in this game! Some riders have a great aggressive style that it would criminal to change. Others are smooth Af and that’s their bag.I wave my arms about too much if I don’t concentrate on not doing it! Looks dumb! I guess we’re all super critical of our own skating. Good vid

    Hi, quick question: should the hard ware on your deck be sort of bulging out of the grip? It’s not really pushed out, but if you run your fingers along the grip you can feel the difference of the smoothness.

    • @JonBishopSkate
      @JonBishopSkate  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many thanks for tuning in! I like to remove the excess grip tape from around the holes so the hardware fits flush. It doesn’t really make any difference to the riding though? You may need to go back and tighten the hardware as the wood compresses. Some people just like to put the hardware straight through the grip, but this will cause the bulging you describe??

    Once you are feeling confident in your basics, id consider losing the pads when you are skating on smaller transition like mini ramps. From a style perspective, you’ll always look better without them. Just bust them out when you are trying something new you aren’t sure about yet. Of course this is just my opinion, if you are concerned about your safety then it’s always cooler to be padded up than not skate at all! Very cool video man, you are definitely cleaning things up! Keep shredding!

    • @JonBishopSkate
      @JonBishopSkate  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cheers dude, yeah, there is some old footage in here to show how I used to do the tricks, no pads on for the main mini ramp footage though? I definitely feel I skate more loose and focused without knee and elbow pads. Do you mean loose the helmet and wrist guards? I always wear a helmet for everything, even flat ground. I’m inspired by Mike V and Andy Anderson and also it’s a deal I made with my wife 😂 I’m now used to weight/balance so it feels wrong/more difficult to skate without it? The wrist guards are also non negotiable due to my job. Don’t mind loosing a bit of skin from the knees and elbows though, that’s all part of it 😂

    • @adamf386
      @adamf386 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JonBishopSkate, hey brother, i just meant pads in general, helmet and wrist guards included, but having a happy wife is much more important than looking cooler on the board lol. Also If Mike V and andy are your guys then it makes perfect sense anyhow!

      @JonBishopSkate  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@adamf386 cheers dude, love the input ! Yeah, I’ve got a bold head so I’d have wear some sort of head gear anyway 😂 I know exactly what you mean, just recently I’ve noticed there are spots I can skate to a certain level and be confident of not coming a cropper. I’ve found it’s not only gaining the experience of how to make the trick at that spot, but more importantly how to get out of it, and also knowing when it’s definitely time to bail. I’ve had some weird head bangs when I have least expected it, I’m quite clumsy and you’d be amazed what I’ve managed to do. Fairly recently I went to push off and kicked the back wheel with my pushing foot, I went head first into the bowl and slid down the trannie on my head 😂

    What i always noticed with your style is, that your shoulders/upper body do not lead.
    You ever noticed when people who just start out are learning a kick turn or carving round a corner?
    I think your style would benefit a lot if your shoulders / upper body would really lead the movements.
    You can see it in your axle stalls particularly well i think, the legs/hips always go into the movement first and your upper body follows.
    Of course the shoulder leading is more comittal, putting all the weight in the trick - the way you do it, it's easier to jump off if something goes wrong.
