I just read the “bald” comment, and it made me feel very sad. Not for Tomlin, he strikes me as a strong man, who has confidence in himself, but sad for the person, who felt the need to make a very personal comment, about an excellent and generous teacher. I hope that persons life improves for him, and no longer feels the need to hide behind anonymity. Best wishes, Norman Stott

Thanks for your videos Tomlin, you are the best! Funny story: for a long time I played Honer SP20 harmonicas, which I changed to Seydel Session Steel, but now I have nothing in my set except Kongsheng Amazing 20, which I love. Everyone chooses what he likes! Good luck to you and your loved ones!

I've tried a lot of harmonicas over the years, by Hohner, Seidel, Lee Oskar, Suzuki, and several other smaller companies. Some of them (well, one... the Seidel 1847 Lightning) cost over $100. The Crossover is by *far* my favorite, and worth every extra penny versus most $50-60 choices. They play the best out of the box, and are easy to disassemble and adjust. And you can buy replacement reed plates for less than $50 when a reed eventually goes bad. Tone, playability, bendability are all top notch. And personally I prefer natural wood/bamboo over plastic. Just the best.

"Advanced beginner" here, struggling to find the time to practice and improve amid day-to-day work and family obligations. I finally warped the comb on a Marine Band 1896 and loosened the nails while disassembling another to clean it, and I have a couple of Suzuki Pro Master Paddy Richters. In my limited experience the Crossovers are definitely worth the higher price, but I'm also fortunate that the higher price is not a constraint for me.
Thanks Tomlin for so much fantastic content.

Very nice review. Sometime ago I think you did a comparison of a few harmonicas of which the crossover was one. I got a few crossovers after and like them a lot because they seem easy to bend and have a smooth sound. A while later I decided to try a Rocket Amp harp ( Maybe when they started making them lime green:). I think they are very easy to play and though I play some of my other harps, I really like the rocket most these days. I will note that it took a little work to get happy with my warbles because the holes have very little space between them.

Not crossovers , a Rocket and a Special 20 . I’ve moved onto Seydel now and so far no problems. Thankyou for your honesty To lin

Great video, as usual. I think there is one thing to consider whith tthis great harmonica, and it is the distance between the front and the back. I supose its personal, depending on ones anatomy, but the space for the lips and finger is a little short for me.

I have tried both the Crossover and the Deluxe and found them to be not as good or reliable as the Rocket. I also use a Special 20 "live" without any problems. Of course not everybody will like the same thing but I think it's worth checking out harmonicas in the £30 to £50 range before spending any more. P.S. Great video as usual.

Something I never realised about harmonicas is that eventually they "blow out" and don't sound so good.

The reed(s) either need adjustment, or if damaged beyond repair, need to be replaced; individually if possible, or all together with a whole new reed plate and reeds.

I've got a set of Lee Oskars but my main set is Special 20's. Right now my search for tone is more important budget wise -- trying to get the William Clarke / Dennis Greunling tone. I just bought an Astatic JT-30 from Dennis. Now starts the journey to find the right amp. I can't find/afford a vintage tube amp like what Dennis sells so all my amps are solid state. I'm currently looking at a Boss Dual Cube LX because it has the same controls as the Boss model it has replaced and Juzzie Smith has a good video on how to dial it in and get that raunchy tube amp tone I'm looking for.

I have tried both and am happy with both of them. For me the crossover is a little easier to play. Also the bamboo comb is less affected by moisture which is a plus for me. Usually the Marine Band deluxe sits on my desk and the Crossover comes with me in the pocket. I am contemplating a harp with plastic comb for pocket carry though.

I have tried several Hohner models and they all bring me to tears! I have a moustache which the cover plates tend to grab and yank out while playing and that is quite painful. I almost gave up playing because of this problem but found that both the Suzuki Hammond and Lee Oskar have covers that don't trap hair. The Suzuki Hammond is my favorite.
