  • See the beautifully restored historic Pleyel Double Grand of the Quad Cities (on the Iowa/Illinois border) as introduced by Dr. Marian Lee. This is a unicorn in the piano world. Only 74 were produced during the turn of the 20th century and FMTA of the Quad Cities owns one of the only fully functioning, playable ones in the Western Hemisphere if you don't count France.
BTW, the copyright claim is invalid and being disputed. It is obviously my duo partner and I playing and the music is from 1918 so well below the 1927 public domain threshold in the US. #doublegrandpiano, #pleyelpiano, #pianoduos

Much respect for restoring and sharing a piece of history with us. I'd have never have known anything about this was it not for this video. Hope to see more videos from this teacher.

Double pianos are, in short, a way to celebrate music and friendship. I love them 🥰

Fascinating stuff! This story needs to be told to more people. Without history we won't know who we are.

There are lots of songs that would sound amazing on this instrument like Balloon Pop Polka by Ruth Ellinger, Rejoice We sing by Ruth Henderson (the 2 Piano Parts), you name it.

There was one on display at the Shanghai piano expo in October 2019. It was playable, but I do not remember to what extent it was (if at all) restored.

I bet you're going to have some virtual instrument developer come out to sample that double string resonance.
Can't wait to hear Reich's Piano Phase on that. Lovely video.

Yeah the amount of tension on this Piano is Twice as much as a Normal Piano at 90000 Lbs.

This is a surprise!!!! I'm from Davenport and this is the last thing that I might expect to find on TH-cam. Thanks for rescuing the pianio. I also grew up about two blocks from St. Ambrose. My father had a business in the front of our house, Fey Builders Supply. Sadly, both our house and my father's business have been replaced by commercial businesses.

Grotrian has also a double grand. The idea WOULD be interesting, but a piano needs a harp-like format in order to have a very controlled and clear sound. squared pianos sound like uprights.

Agreed. I've played a few square grands, and none of them were particularly "sonorous"; the keybeds themselves also seemed a bit on the shallow side. However, I'm fairly certain that someone with the funds to invest in rebuilding one of these instruments could address these issues, to some extent. I'd be interested to hear the results.

There’s one in Chile, it is playable, recently restored and it is known that it is the one that was on the brusells expo, almost 110 years ago

It is in a museum call Museo de Sonido, Huerfanos street
The model it is like the one from the video, but it has not that configuration to block both dampers in order to get more resonance.
It is also known that this is one of the 10 first models made by Pleyel, it was finished in 1897…. The same year that the model was published and announced

I wonder why the right side of the piano gets the artist bench while the left side sticks with the traditional wooden bench
