  • More info about travel to Split: www.ricksteves.com/europe/cro... Split's residents are literally living in a Roman palace. In the fourth century AD the Roman Emperor Diocletian retired and built a vast residence to live out his golden years here in his native Dalmatia. Later when Rome fell, Diocletian's palace was abandoned. Eventually, a medieval town sprouted from its abandoned classical shell and his mausoleum became a cathedral. To this day, the maze of narrow alleys - once literally Diocletian's hallways - make up the core of Split. Nearby, the seaside promenade is perfect for a stroll. #ricksteveseurope #ricksteves #croatia

    Was there over the weekend and a bit. Split old town is beautiful, safe, and has very friendly locals. The smell of sulphur engulfs the Riva so eat gelato. Keep on travelling!

    many of the best emperors of the crisis of the third century and maybe even later were from Serbia like Marcus Aurelius Probus,Aurelian, Claudius Gothicus, Constantine the Great, Maximian,Constantius II,maybe Constantius Chlorus.although some of them were Illyrian orginally or Croatia like Diocletian,Valentinian I so these two countries are one of the reason the roman empire didn't collapse earlier and stayed for another 1000 years

    CROAT WAS A ROMAN EMPIRE,BORN HERE,HE FIRST BECOME EMPIRE BY FIGHT, STRENGTH AND SMART THINKING,NOT LIKE EMPERATOR'S BEFORE WGO BECOME TITLE FROM FATHER OR FAMILY--HE FIGHT FOR HE'S OWN PLACE!!

    • @NickoOlimp
      @NickoOlimp ปีที่แล้ว

      The ancestors of modern Croats came to this area a few centuries later than Diocletian. And I think it wasn't unique to become an emperor after a military career.

      I am visiting here in Split a seminar to become a tourist guide and all what she said is accurate.
      This is of course a very small part of the whole history but I did also learn this what she was saying.
      I can't tell you if she has a license but at least she didn't tell some nonsense.
