Joining associations and going to industry events is a great way to connect with your event planning community!

Also check out your local technical school, a lot of them offer event planning certificates and don't cost a ton. The one near me also includes internship experience.

im an engineer and im 22.im actually giving up a job in IT to get into event management, that shows my passion. i have done 8 out 10 steps which u mentioned exactly except that i dont have a mentor and i hav not yet organized any events. Im actually not getting any callbacks from the companies, so its freaking me out. am i right in choosing this career?? is it worth giving up a "good paying" job and coming into this field??

Hello dear ! Thanks for your comment. I so much relate to what you said because I’m almost in the same position. I’m 25, IT engineer as well who has always been passionate about Event Planning. Unfortunately, my parents didn’t want to hear about that so I found myself in the Telecom field. After I graduated, I decided to pursue my passion regardless of what my relatives may think. I struggled for months but finally got a job. Maybe not the most exiciting one (since it’s not an event planning company), but at least I gain some experience coz from time to time, I get to organize some corporate events (meetings, conferences).
Anyway, my point is I understand it can be really stressful but do not give up on your dream. Not getting any callbacks from companies? Go out there and create opportunities. You wrote this comment 5 months ago. I don’t know what does your situation look like now but I hope things got better for you and that you have more confidence in your choice. If you don’t mind would like us to connect in order to discuss from time to time. You can find me on LinkedIn (Lynda Samo).
Good luck to us in the event industry !

Keep your regular job in IT and start volunteering at events and picking up clients along the way. When you're getting enough business to make a living then you can leave your job

How’s it going? Organise your own local event for your community or a charity! Great practise!
