    Wow! Your performers are magnificent! Such perfection in rhythm and subtlety of dynamic range. You make me love this piece even more and to have even more respect for your ensemble. Even your trills are coordinated!! Double bravo!

    I don't know why i cried (maybe because of the beer) xD But when i saw those people geting free 🥺 it was so emotional. The piece is the otherwordly medium through wich you can experience how he have then felt.. when your fate is unknown and the only thing you could do is help others as much as you can;, music became the only thing that could make him say how he really felt inside- anxious and uncertain of anything. But i don't think of those as emotions that limit ones mind, but it brings the feeling of stepping out of the real time and space as they said in this documentary. You begin to think beyond all that is happening. Also the most upplifting emotions come when you face fear. It becomes all that your ancenstors have left for you that makes you feel as a real human beying; for once you accept it, it becomes the most beautyful thing.

    Thank you for you comments on Freedom at the end SSGT Johnson. And for interpreting this piece for me. I would have been lost otherwise.

    Wonderful presentation. I only wish that this post was longer and brought forward a harmonic analysis of the chords. What kinds of chords are these? And why did he choose these to repeat over and over? Personally, I find this quartet absolutely painful. It almost strips the flesh from my bones.

      I'd love a technical analysis of the chords for the Louange a l'eternite de Jesus movement too!

    Fine documentary on a great piece of contemporary music. I wonder if they'll be performing it for the current incumbent ;=)

    Very many thanks for both commentary and performance. Also, beautiful video clips. You might also like this talk: th-cam.com/video/alTGLjtWiRw/w-d-xo.html given at the Library of Congress, just before a performance. There's discussion at quite a technical level, of how Messiaen achieved some of his more unusual musical effects - playing with mode structures, for instance.

    What an excellent exaltant and deeply profound piece!! Very hard to listen to at first,,,give it time. Listen and listen,, allow the sound to overtake you as you meditate on the Book of Revelations and where it was written! Alos get he etchings of albrect durers of Revelations!!

    I don't know about the Commandant of the Marine Corps, but the Twentieth Century compositions (such as this Messian) performed by "The President's Own" ensemble would go way over the head of the current Commander In Chief.

    I didn't have 30 minutes and 6 seconds to spare, so I played it at 1.5x playback speed. The music sounded much better!

    • @zenviolence
      @zenviolence  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That wouldn't necessarily upset the composer! We are talking about a piece, after all, that famously could be played forward and backward with the same rhythmic imprint.

      The performances seen in this film were documented before the term of that Presidential administration.
