Two Cold War icons flying together. It's like an old talk up in the skies about them doing routine exercises with Strategic Air Command and V Force back in the 50s wondering if they're ever gonna drop the bomb or not.
Alex Brown Simple. The Vulcan couldn't adapt to the low level penetration role as well as the B-52 did. After Soviet/Eastern bloc air defenses got good enough to make high altitude attack little more than a suicide mission, low level attack became the only viable option. Despite the Vulcan's impressive takeoff climb and manouvers, the fact is that it had poor top speed and range when pushed hard at low altitude. It couldn't adapt, so it was retired... It was an impressive and beautiful plane, but it just found itself without a role to fill.
@@lees.4084 No I don't agree with you on the Vulcan, it did adapt to low level, never heard of the B52 doing low level though, American pilots think 15,000 feet is low!
The vulcans unusual delta design allows it to turn tight manouvers and its power to weight ratio is so good it could takeoff steeper if it wanted too however due to the landing gear configuration it would strike the rear of the aircraft
The Vulcan could out turn and evade a Soviet MIG interceptor at high altitude. So yeh, it had air to air combat capability, while carrying a nuclear bomb.
" Scramble scramble scramble " Glad it never came to that, but the nation must have the capability to inflict damage the enemy. A strategic bomber that can outmaneuver Soviet Mig interceptors is a formidable weapon, For a time the Vulcans had Moscow very worried.
She gave more value in pride than ever was the sum of her parts, she gave us comfort, security and reassurance that this country could be leaders of the world. She was finally shot down by a Government that has no soul.
In case anyone is interested, the howl comes from the tips of the compressor blades breaking the sound barrier, while the B-52's screech comes from the tips riding right on the edge of the sound barrier.
In fact, the howl of the Vulcan is from high velocity air being sucked into the engines down the long intakes. The air resonates in the intakes. Any jet engine compressor blades that broke the sound barrier would not make an efficient engine - designers tend to avoid such inefficiencies.
Haven’t seen the B52 at RIAT in years (there was one in the static display last year but what’s the point in that?). I really miss seeing it taking off.
@Bobby Brady That's because downtown Moscow is circa 1,555 miles from the eastern U.K.where the Vulcans were based. The Vulcan's un-refuelled range with a maximum load was circa 4,000 miles. In 1962 The Vulcan was adapted to carry the Blue Steel stand-off bomb which was the precursor to the cruise missile having a range of 575 miles at a speed of mach 3. This enabled the Vulcans (and the range superior Victors) to launch an attack on Moscow and return - if there was somewhere to return to following the inevitable retalliatory attack(s). The Vulcans and Victors were withdrawn from the nuclear role in 1970 when the Royal Navy's polaris submargerines came into service. The U.K. - unlike the U.S.A. - does and did not need a massively long ranged bomber as the U.K. did and does not consider itself the world police. The U.K. never undertook permanent nuclear patrols like the U.S.A. did. They did however stop the "Chrome Dome" system after the third crash involving nuclear carrying B-52s.
Vulcan had a higher ceiling, 55,000 ft as opposed to the 50,000 of the b52 , it could also outmanoeuvre any fighter at that altitude due to its much lower wing loading.
My friend, have you ever heard of psychological warfare? Ya hear that thing comin in and you damn well better flee 😉 haha, also if you look at some of the other vids of Vulcan, when it isn’t accelerating or throttling up it is very quiet indeed, hence increasing its efficiency and you could even say its level of “stealth” on a low level run 👍

@@joechesters7936 Yes. The B-1B is a more modern bird in all aspects. But they're both designed for a more similar application. Question: why couldn’t the Vulcan be turned into a stealth bomber? Upgraded?
