    Armchair biologist here-that mould you evicted was there from the start, just in a less obvious form. So you accomplished more than just cleaning the van, you’ve knocked back years of accumulating health risk. New paint and wallpaper sequesters residual spores. Sanding the countertops digs out buried colonies. Fresh linens resets a big contributor to poor air quality. All in all, I think you were fortunate that you didn’t leave the keys with friends, forcing you to take drastic steps. And good decision on the green!

    • @brickupgrades
      @brickupgrades 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Exactly what I was thinking….. And also this can happen in humid tropical places in the World especially when there is lack of airflow.It’s a wake up call probably for everybody.

    • @phillyandkeely
      @phillyandkeely  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Yeah I think you are right, it just needed the right environment to be allowed to thrive. Feels good to have had the deep clean.

    Keely you are a great mathematician. = BUT, you MUST GUT the van!!! = You can NOT hand clean the cracks or under any layers!!! === Me, 40 years HOSPITAL Paramedic and infection control officer!!❤❤

    • @brickupgrades
      @brickupgrades 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I am thinking the same. I would be exploring behind the pine lining boards in the ceiling and under the floor coverings into the walls with the insulation to see how far the mould has gone. It is a big job but how much do you value you Health.

      @@brickupgrades Well said thanks. My fear is from seeing lungs destroyed by a lack of research.

      Appreciate the concern and advice ❤️❤️When we replaced the back window Philly had to take down a couple boards to resecure them so he could see no mould in behind there thankfully cuz that would have been a mission 💪 as for our walls I can only go off the fact that there was none on the front of the walls (apart from our wallpaper. When we first painted the van it was with anti mould bathroom/kitchen stuff so it seems to have protected the wood. From all the different places it had grown it seems to be anywhere food or hands regularly touched, any traces of bacteria left to thrive, for example my chair covered in mould from numerous spills and Philly's complexly perfect because it was clean. So I am very confident behind the walls is good. Just to be sure we borrowed a professional mould radar thing from a local business and it showed the all clear, no traces of mould in the air before we start moving our stuff back in.

    My concern would be what's in the vents and behind the dash. I sure hope you were able to disinfect it enough that neither of you get sick. I saw another van lifer that had mold in the floor due to a leak and she had to do a full gut job.

    • @phillyandkeely
      @phillyandkeely  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Yeah was wondering if possible to replace filter or something in those air vents in front. Looking into this. So far the air is all testing mould free which is a good sign though (we borrowed a mould reader thing from a local company that does insulation in houses)

    It’s a sad homecoming with Martha, but I think you need to throw the baskets away cause they will still harbour the spores no matter what, especially if sensitive to your lungs. But your new chance to change a few things and upgrade is great. Well done!

    • @phillyandkeely
      @phillyandkeely  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Yeah those baskets are long gone now, they were a hazard site 😂😂 just got crappy cheapy things to hold stuff in the meantime, but might design some proper shelves or boxes to fit in their specifically in the future.

      We went straight to the shop to buy a new mattress. Then realised the price had went up to like £400 🤯 so decided to try steam cleaning the foam first and washing the covers at 60 and letting it all dry in the sun. Thankfully that seems to have worked, but if it ever got mould again In future we would suck up the price and replace

    My biggest disturbing takeaway from this episode is that tacky deep-shag 70s carpet was an international problem, not just an American affliction. I can only hope humanity has learned its lesson.
    But seriously, guys, top marks on all your hard work. I don't think you should deride yourselves it took longer than you initially thought. Love the new look. Loved the old look too but this change is good.
    Philly - duvet hack;
    1: turn duvet cover inside out
    2: get your arms up inside the cover and grab an end corner in each hand
    3: also grab a corner of the actual duvet in each hand
    4: shake duvet cover downwards until whole duvet is covered.
    I use this method at home & in van. Quick and easier.

      We did have a mould tester thing and only moved back in when it was reading good levels everywhere. Thankfully the walls and ceiling didn't have much Tracey of mould ok the outside, so hopeful that it was fine behind it. It seemed to be every surface that ever had food or that we touched etc was bad. The wallpaper at our feet was mouldy, but the wall behind it was fine. So finger crossed all good 🤞🤞

    Oh guys! I'm sure the last thing you expected to deal with was yet another van makeover but it looks AMAZING!!! Fresh start...in a way the mold is a blessing in disguise forcing you to do a good deep cleaning/refresh that it probably needed anyway after being your home for so long. Keely I love the wallpaper and the green paint. Philly the tip for putting a duvet cover on (so glad to hear you call it a duvet as I call them that too but here in Australia they call them "Doonas"...what the?!) is to turn the duvet cover inside out then reach in to the far end corners and then grab the corners of the duvet at one end, lift it all up and shake the cover down over the duvet. Done!

    • @phillyandkeely
      @phillyandkeely  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To be honest I don't think the bread was the culprit cuz it was all sealed. I would say makesure you have scrubbed every surface very well before you go, it's like anywhere our hands feet or food had ever touched must have traces of bacteria on them and it just thrived in super damp conditions. So if there was no traces before we left I don't think it would have been so bad. Phillys seat for example had no mould and mine had loads, I always spill drinks and food etc. So my advice is deep deep deep clean and lots of ventilation, big bowls of salt to absorb moisture

I've given Scotland a miss this year as the weather in 2024 in the UK is just so cold and wet, no sign of summer yet, beginning to think it's never coming. I saw that someone above recommended the ozone treatment of the van... it's never too late to do it!
    I don't know if it's available in your neck of the woods, but I would buy some Mold Control spray from Concrobium and saturate everything with it... it's actually a clear, natural product and works great! Spray spray spray, run the heather (dry heat) and do it again. It's good for the regular maintenance of the van. If you ever consider repainting, you first do a good base coat with the Kilz primer Mold and Mildew control, then the new paint will hold so much better over it! Kilz works as both a sealant and a primer. There was water damage from a pipe leak in my flat in rainy Vancouver a while back, we had to replace the floors and cut the walls halfway up so I learned the hard way how to control mold 🫡 🌧️ 🇨🇦
    I realized I'm a bit late, but the algorithm just recommended you two lovelies - instant sub! 🫡 Imma binge watching what I missed I reckon ❤🚐

    Great video. Well done for a brilliant demoulding job - and your humour and comments just made me laugh out loud, especially considering the absolute mould nightmare you had to defeat.
    Just a thought. When I lived in humid SeAsia, we used to leave buckets with a few inches of bleach dotted around our flat to prevent mould when we'd be gone for a while. It seemed to work, especially during rainy season.
    Wonderful that you've now got a fresh, new start.

    I'm so sorry so see your van destroyed by mould. I'm really worried that you won't be able to fully clean it - there will still be spores left behind and the mould will come back, and living in that is going to make you both VERY sick.
    I think you probably need to gut the van and do a new build for the interior... or if you can afford it, send Martha for scrap metal and buy a new van to start again (like you did with Dingo).

    Spraying things down with hydrogen peroxide should prevent mold from coming back. We dealt with that here at our home in the US. We had our crawl space treated but found mold creeping up our walls in the back of our closets and once everything was thoroughly cleaned, we were told by the mold remediation companies to use hydrogen peroxide to prevent it from reoccurring. So far...1 year later....no mold. ❤

    You need to wipe everything down with eucalyptus oil to make sure you kill any mold spores that are left but you can’t see them. The mold will grow back if you don’t kill it all off. I had a very bad experience with mold that was under a house we rented and we couldn’t see it but I got very sick for months from it. Apparently bleach will appear to make mould disappear but not kill the spores, vinegar is meant to kill them. We have a problem with mould in winter in some corners of rooms due to ventilation issues, I place containers of calcium chloride crystals (non toxic & septic safe) which very effectively absorb moisture in the air. I get mine from Bunnings so most hardware stores should have them. All the best from Ballarat, Australia.

      Those baskets are long gone now 😂 defo no bringing back wicker, they were alive haha. A lot of stuff was decided not to be salvageable after the first wipe down. Have some cheapy things to hold stuff ATM but thinking of making some bespoke storage to fit in that box 💪💪

    Next time you need to dry and vacuum pack all soft fabric. Have lived in a caravan and in Queensland. Shaking that fuzz was so dangerous. It was all over your clothes and hair. Also not sure why there were still soft fabrics in the van. Hanging thing and mossie net. Also next time maybe mix the paint up better before starting ❤

      Those soft fabrics had been taken out and washed at 60 or steam cleaned. Like we said didn''t film everything we did, but don't worry nothing in that van has any mould traces on it ❤️ Good advice about shaking the paint even more next time 💪💪

      @phillyandkeely safe travels. Yes my husband worked in the paint department at Mitre10. When it's cold it takes ages to mix the paint. So glad you had cleaned all those soft items. I'm a retired community mental health worker, and that mould is so dangerous. My clients in run down damp housing showed me that.
      So glad you loved Tassie. Very special. The rain was welcome as the east coast had been in drought for ages this last year.
