The Tanglewood Music Festival in Stockbridge, MA celebrated one of its most beloved figures John Williams' 90th birthday on Saturday, August 20, 2022. The program featured a selection of Williams' concert music composed for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops, along with many beloved film themes. Guests artists included Yo-Yo Ma, Branford Marsalis, Itzhak Perlman and more.
James Taylor performed Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Getting to Know You" from The King and I and with his good friend, Yo-Yo Ma performed his classic lullabye, "Sweet Baby James" a favorite at Tanglewood.

Yeah Beverly. Basically anyone born in the 50 or 60s (like you and I, I guess) that has music as a big part of their life, knows the power, magic and beauty of James Taylor's music. He's a master. So cool to see him here w/ Yo-Yo and Williams. Some talent in that space that night, man! Beautiful.
James Taylor’s concert is the first show I got in line before sunrise to wait in line. (Very pre internet) Got great seats and it moved my soul was moved by his smooth graceful poetry. I hope to see him again because he’s a genius and has a voice like butter.

Amazing how the same song, with the same lyrics and same melody, changes so much with perspective. A song written & flawlessly performed by a young musical genius with a sometimes tortured soul made us feel both his joy, and at times his angst back then.
Now, those identical notes & words, filtered thru the fingers and pipes of older, seasoned, treasured troubador, pull at our hearts with memories of where & what we were when he played the soundtrack of our life. A priceless gift we all got to share.

Thirty-odd years ago, our infant daughter began crying one night. None of the usual tricks (including singing to her) worked and twenty hours later she was still crying hard. We hit the ER who, of course, referred us to her doctor. He also found nothing wrong and we found ourselves wide awake and frazzled with this insanely-crying infant, 36 hours after she'd started. But then, on came a JT fundraising concert on TV. Over the crying, I softly sang along with James on this song, and bam! She was out like a light and slept for a solid 12 hours. Maybe it was just her time to conk out; but I think we were saved by JT and 'Sweet Baby James'.
Thank you James for your music...no matter how many times I hear your songs they always sound as wonderful as the first time I heard them. Over 50yrs of listening to them and I just appreciate them more everyday. ❤️

The cello's baritone voice, so very near human in tone and timbre, was the perfect trio. I particularly enjoyed the violinist in the background that closed her eyes to take it all in without distraction. And, of course, this is one of my favs of JT. Excellent job!

Have been appreciating JT for about 43 years, likely hearing it 6 years before that (pops was a fan). I do believe you are my most consistent go-to ever. I absolutely love that we still get to hear new performances, often times with other beautiful artists. Old love, new rendition. Nothing beats the soul you show in every song, in every performance.

Sweet baby James, my kids came to know this as the cowboy song. I sang it to my 4 children since 1979. Just sang it to my 6 yr old grandson tonight. 42 years and counting. Sweet Baby James is timeless.

I was at this celebration live and it was amazing. I got to see JT live, who ive listened to my entire childhood. To have him and Yo Yo Ma together was amazing. Then having Itzhak Perlman perform Schindler's List live and get to hear A New Hope Throne Room live. Then to get Superman theme played live during a movie tribute to John Williams. Finally, to get to sing Happy bday to John and have John Williams himself end the night conducting Raider's March, an amazing night ill never forget.
My husband and closest friends were there as well, truly an unforgettable night!! I'll never forget this amazing birthday :D
