This game created a timeline split. The original game is the original timeline, and this game created the Gooigi timeline, where E-gad sent Gooigi back, creating a butterfly affect that will eventually lead to Luigi’s mansion 3.

I remember how annoying that could get in the original. I didn't notice it as much for my first run because I was younger and had the free time to play for longer sessions, but going back... Man it can get kind of annoying.
After storing his nose pickings for years, E. Gad sends his booger collection back in time, where it gains sentience and takes the form of Luigi.
That's it. That's my Gooigi headcanon.
On a side note, I would have loved to see Gooigi messing around in the background during E Gad's calls

Yes, and its been a thing since the second Mario & Luigi game titled "Partners in Time" where E Gadd tests his Time Travel technology, and on one of the test where they sent Peach to see the Mushroom Kingdom of the past, she is captured by aliens called shroobs who mess up the timeline by going to said past and literally ruining the Mushroom Kingdom and killing and kidnapping inhabitants. Alphadream and Nintendo did alot for us during the early 2000s till the mid 2010s.

Luigi's Mansion 3 actually did manage to be kind of creepy. The killer piano from Mario 64 is referenced in a boss fight (and it looks even creepier this time), and the overall atmosphere is spookier. They have 'haunted' music tracks for each floor. That's how much effort was put in to the game.

I would argue the opposite actually. The first area is mostly humorous, and then it starts getting kind of creepy. The Old Clockworks and Secret Mine legitimately gave me chills on my first playthrough.

Luigi' smansion legitimate creeped the fuck out of me as a kid. Like the lore with the ghost family and the ghost baby and shit, it's all legitimately creepy. Reading up on the ghost dad's backstory that you just took from his natural environment. The glutton ghost that like ate himself to death. Man, it disturbed me.
