  • Mazda5 3-day Build Van Conversion. We built a bed and some storage in our van so we can live in it for a few months while waiting for Europe to open up again. We wanted a quick, uncomplicated build that is easy to undo because we will sell the Mazda 5 afterward.
    This microvan is perfect for our purpose because it has ample space, it's fun to drive, and it has good gas mileage.
    We built it within three days but if you have all the materials needed, it could be done in one day. Our total spend was only $14 and change. But that's a lot of luck finding free stuff, and I already had other things lying around.
    We will be driving from Arizona to the pacific coast up to Seattle then make our way to the east coast, boondocking and staying with friends and family all the way.

    SOME BUILD NOTES
    =================
    The two pieces of plywood are connected to each other by 3 door hinges that I already had lying around. It's not affixed to the bed frame, it's just sitting on top.
    The bed frame also sits in the van, not bolted in, but it doesn't move. The corners of the frame butt up against the interior panels. So the whole thing can be removed, just need to unscrew the hinges. We did not take out the seats.
    I'm about 5-foot 7 or 8 inches and I just about fit in there when I lie on the bed, my feet barely touching the hatch. Bonnie is only a couple of inches shorter than I am so no problems there. If you are taller, you might still be able to fit, but you'll have to lean the front seats forward and devise a removable platform that can go between the back of the front seats and the head of the bed.
