  • Reynaldo's Hahn's keyboard collection Le rossignol éperdu (The Bewildered Nightingale) consists of 53 miniature "poems for piano." They are delicious. Join me in hearing a few samples, thanks to the artistry of the inimitable Earl Wild, on Ivory Classics. This is one of those evocative masterpieces that deserves to be better known. You can enjoy it complete, or in bits of any size, as you please. Hahn was one of those composers who knew exactly what his strengths were, and whose music does full justice to them.

"Ah Chloris" is what brought me to Hahn. Im a pianist so I searched IMSLP for scores. I'm blown away by these pieces! Pianists are lucky to have such a fantastic repertoire in the "miniatures" department. Thank you for this review.

“La reine au jardin”, in particular, is hauntingly beautiful! I love Hahn’s larger-scale works too, like his violin and piano concerti, Violin Sonata, and, above all, his Piano Quintet.

I've had Earl's Hahn collection for a few years now, and I'm dumbfounded why this "World Premier Recording" isn't better known. You're oh so correct Dave, it has EVERYTHING French music, especially keyboard music, is known for, certainly sensitivity and unfailing taste. Earl was known for so many recordings, but this is the one I return to over and over again. I really want to thank you Dave for taking the time to highlight this musical jewel. I sincerely hope Mr. Davis' website will bulge with future orders over the next few days. Thank you again!

Great to see this get some attention and love! Had it for what feels like decades, loved it to bits, and never saw or heard anyone say anything about it ever. Will this be the great breakthrough for good old Reynaldo?
Well, probably not. But thank you anyway!

Auspicious timing! I just last week bought a couple of discs of Hahn's songs (sung by Veronique Gens, marvelous) after only being vaguely aware of him for many years. I'm looking forward to making friends with this guy.

. . . . ."like a scene out of Soylent Green" - ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.😂 I nearly died laughing. Reminds me of a visit to the Forbidden City taking a bunch of students. Anyway, you sure sold me on this music and this recording; such gorgeous stuff, and the piano playing and sound! Whew! Thanks tons!

Thank you for this, Dave. I only knew Hahn mostly through his piano concerto (on Hyperion) and from an album of love songs that Vinson Cole did for Delos. ("A Chloris" just melts me.) I love Earl Wild and I am snapping this up right away!

Lovely music, especially nos. 2 & 3; I wasn't aware of the work. Back in '76, I was in the D.C. area and continually annoyed by their classical radio station, which featured the most pretentious and affected announcers imaginable. However, they chose good intro music for their programs, including Hahn's "Lesquercade" from his ballet "Le Bal de Beatrice d'Este", scored for winds, tymp, 2 harps & piano. Lovely, elegant music (a la Renaissance), featuring a stately Intrada very much in the mode of Hahn's "La Reine au Jardin" which you featured. I subsequently spent much time tracking down the French EMI LP of "le Bal", which I think would be very appropriate music for entertaining the masses at Versailles; it's enchanting sounds might even soothe the savage ticket-booth lady...maybe even help improve the snack-bar experience. I like these independent artists, Cyprien Katsaris, Earl Wild, who make us hear something else. Wow, you're french is very good! And entertaining! As a French speaker, I'm quite impressed

Thanks David, nice video on "L'heure exquise" Hahn. Yes, I can assure you that Reynaldo Hahn never visited the kiddy zoo in Iowa. It seems remiss of him not to have written a miniature about it, seeing as how he never went. 😂

The Hahn is great!! How about Suite Francaise by Poulenc for winds and harpsichord. Most of the mvts are very short but tuneful. I believe you mentioned it. Maybe you did it and I missed it. Anyway, always wonderful videos!!

Loved the Versailles story! Did they let you eat cake? I saw Hahn's opera Merchant of Venice (Marchand du Venise) at Portland Opera and it was tres charmant.

For Earl Wild? Oy, where do we start... Get the Scharwenka piano concerto disc, and his Rachmaninoff song transcriptions, at a minimum!
