I just realize how unfair the attack was
1. Fire is getting bigger beacuse of wind
2. Comet sozin is powering them up
3. Most of the air nomad are pacifist
4. They were ambushed without any preperation
Yet other people complaining about the Air Nomads are weak.
Note that Sozin stated that they might have prevailed if it was any other day.
Sadly, that was the whole point. It was intended as a complete and total slaughter of ALL Air Nomads, who despite being pacifists are very hard to kill on account of their abilities.
Uyghur? Gaza? West Bank? Rohingya? Yemen? Kurds? Israelis? Jews? Syrians? Or what?
Edit: I don't necessarily think any of the above are genocide. But each are thought of as genocide by others.

Man I didn't watch the netflix series yet but I hope they kinda changed that air nomads don't have an army. I just can't believe there's such a thing as a country without a military. They could be nation or semi-state w/o army though eg Uyghur, Palestine/Gaza/West Bank, hong kong, macau, etc but no actual army for an actual state/s? Come on.
@@nicbentulan They wrote the air nomads in the original series to be separated from the rest of the world to be free. They never had a formal military/army because they weren’t offensive people. They played defense as a people.

as of late every country/state declaring war always considers themselves doing it as defense. eg when US/UK invaded iraq, when russia invaded ukraine, when israel invaded gaza, etc. it's not like before when oh idk spain invades the philippines to conquer the land or when the whites came to the americas or new south wales.
of course people have their views saying iraq/ukraine/gaza is an aggressive war (and i think only 2 of those 3 should be considered as such) but if you ask US/UK, russia & israel they'll say 'we're defending ourselves.' no one's going to outright come out and say 'yeah we're invading for aggression.'
it's the same w/ the fire nation. when the fire nation attacked the air nomads they claimed defense. i don't think the time period in ATLA was corresponding to like 1400-1699 re the above described events. they seem quite modern especially since TLOK is only less than a century later.

i actually cried during this part. thinking how the air nomads are people of peace and are pacifists who don't like confrontations fighting just to save their lives and their temple tugged heavily on my heart strings
They arent real but this scene equals to illustration of how brutal the murders happening during the real world war. There were some ethnics that actually got extinct by collonialism.

In the animated series we only got glimpses at the tragedy, to witness it, live action is….a bag of mixed emotions. We all know what their fate is…but to actually see it especially with gyatso and the children’s just. Speechless.
man….like it really reminded me that the children died as well. they were brutally murdered. i wanted to believe the children died peacefully

I love hot Sozin was really trying to push back gyatso like even with the power Sozin was not having an easy time beating gyatso. That just shows how strong they really were

The fire benders only had to wait for the comet to stand a chance with the Air Normads. That shows you how the air normads where scary.
No it was to guarantee the air nomad is wiped out in one attack and buy them some time to go after the others when the avatar needs to be born and raised again. Also big part of air bender strength came from being so unknown I'll give you that.

Gyatsu is my hero! He was so brave to protect the childrens. He fought against Zosin even though he knew he had no chance against the Fire Lord. Just because of Zosin's comet. But he didn't give up and gave everything to protect the children.
I love the actors who play Gyatso and Lord Sozin ❤ they did a great job 👏

This reminds me so much of the Titanic. You know they’re going to lose, just like you know the ship is going to hit the iceberg, but you’re just hoping that somehow by rewatching it that this time they can win and overcome this ambush just as hoping that they can miss the iceberg by turning the ship in time, but you know that eventual destiny prevails

Newcomers of the show must know that the comet enhances all the firebenders, like giving them that "flying" ability to attack the Air Nomads in their territory on a very high ground. In the original show, I think it's only Azula being shown doing this skill without the comet since she's always been a prodigy.
That being said, I can't wait to see the greatest earthbender ever on Season 2!

THIS!!! THIS IS AN AMAZING BRUTAL AND CRUEL OPENING TO AN ALREADY AMAZING SERIES!!
Sure it will never live up to the animated version, but it is far... farrrrrr the best version of a live action we have.
Showing the genocide of the air nomads as an intro to the series is something I did not expect, it wasn't shown as much in the animated series but little flashbacks of the temples burning, but here we get to see how the Airbenders valiantly tried to fight off the Comet-powered firebenders, even to the last.
This scene is a nice improvement of the original series. I like how the night Aang left was the night the Fire Nation attacked and killed the Airbenders. It shows that Aang really dodged a bullet when he left. He avoided the attack without even knowing it. The Fire Nation had no way of knowing that one Airbender was missing from temple. It also shows that it is truly not his fault what happened to the Airbenders and the world. There was nothing he could've done. If he stayed he would've just died with the rest of them.
I like to disagree. We never truly know. Avatar state is just that strong. He can’t control it but when it manifests emotionally it will destroy his enemies. He’s also at the airbending temple so a previous air bender might’ve been able to manifest we don’t know. But plot wise, the fact that he got away is probably proof that he was doomed to die I guess
That would be worse. If he is killed in the Avatar state the reincarnation cycle will end and the Avatar will cease to exist.@@ArthurPrince03

(Btw - casting for book 1 was excellent IMO).
I think Azula should be recasted. And add some main traits to characters like aang was more goofy child, soka was overconfident and sexist and Katara was authoritative.
@@casuallyarguments3577they already mentioned that they removed sexism characteristic of sokka. This is intentional. Plus azula's actress was actually good imo. We haven't seen the book 2 yet. All we know right now is the mental torture of Ozai to azula to plant seed of hatred between Zuko and her sister.

1:30 when I first saw the trailer i thought those flying things were fireballs, now that I know that those were firebenders, it made the thought even more horrendous, the depiction of genocide and the graphic deaths, damn
Honestly, when Sozin mentioned his sights being set "higher" I had a hunch that something like this was bound to happen- Nay, I knew what he was talking about, a move which I didn't see coming, but have heard of from the Cartoons. Having not seen the original cartoon in years now, I still remember mentions of it. Then we arrive to here. And holy shit. No pun intended, but this was straight up fire. This was no fight, this was a total genocide.
The absolute sheer brutality of the ambush that kicked off the 100-year war. This was Fire Nation's Order 66: The complete and total extinction of the Air Nomads. The way the Fire Nation brutally burned through the Air Nomads, despite their best efforts at holding them back, was honestly something I didn't know that I, and a lot of ATLA fans wanted to see, then again, this was something we all wished to see, and you guys absolutely delivered.
i am so glad, they show how brutal the fire nation.. the scream in pain of being burned, that is a nice touch to feel how cruel the war is.. nice tecnique of scenario writing👍

And even though life is precious, living beings also have the natural right to defend themselves. So if the Airbenders killed the firebenders it would justified self defense. Especially in regards to protecting their children who couldn't defend themselves.
@@kaister901 That move is seriously overplayed, it requires that the entire room is not capable of fighting back and likewise needs pretty good concentration; can't really do that when you have fire benders coming from all sides shooting at you with enhanced abilities.
@@luigimussolini5966 Maybe you have forgotten. In the original series, even Gyatsu takes out a bunch of fire benders at the place he died. Later on it was confirmed he sucked out the air from the place, killing everyone and himself. I doubt all those firebenders in the original were any weaker.
On top of that, Zaheer is no normal air bender. So, it will be a piece of cake for him. Zaheer went toe to toe against Korra in her avatar state. Korra needed the help of other benders to take down Zaheer. A bunch of normal fire benders is no match for Zaheer.

This must’ve been how the fire nation were able to wipe out the air temples in the og series, this interpretation makes it pretty cool to believe that back in the day the firebenders could literally fly up and invade without no tanks or airships only fire bending to take out an entire tribe

The comet just improves general Firebending as they basically have an energy source and don't need to fuel the fire themselves. So they have more dexterity and an amplifier.

@@youpedia4614i think we should not think too much of them doing Iron Man style flying, because that is very difficult in its own and has a lot of problems.
We just don't see more of them in the cartoon. but that doesn't mean it's difficult in that universe. It is probably the case that the soldiers are better trained in fighting and not transportation as I think that flying takes a lot of your energy and exhausts you fast.

Now! In the old show it was never shown that the Air Nomads fought the Fire Nation all it showed was the burning temples! And later it was revealed that Sozin attacked the Airbenders because after Roku died he knew that the next Avatar would be born an Air Nomad!

FIRE AND BLOOD
The last stand of the Guru was amazing, reminds me of small Hindu kingdom warriors last stand against the might of Islamic invaders of the past, during medieval india. Outnumbered but the men fought bravely till the last, holding off while their Hindu women jump into the fire to save themselves from dishonour and being enjoyed.
We need season 2 ASAP and we also need to see more of avatar Kyoshi’s life
Yeah. And I hope they extend the episodes next time. This season is great as is. But we need more backstory. Backstories really needs more than eight episodes 😊🤞🏾

Wow, I am a big fan of the original animated series, and I loved the Netflix adaptation. I've watched it already few times, and it's amazing! I fell in love with this beautiful series. Fantastic live-action adaptation! I can't wait for the next season! Love the action, adventure, drama, the emotional twist, it brought me to tears, the fantasy, and comedy-all in one! Amazing cinematography, amazing special effects, those animals, spirit animals just amazing, and their powers, the visuals look great and the backgrounds look fantastic! They're all amazing! Gordon is a brilliant, fantastic actor for his young age, and he is so cute; he has a million-dollar smile too. Dallas is a versatile actor, he's amazing actor. Kiawentiio and Ian are amazing too. Paul, and Daniel are very good too. I love the casting, I love the characters, they all did a great job. Congratulations! This is the best live-action adaptation! ♥️
Really wished they added a feature on netflix where you could choose between aspect ratio, would've loved it to watch this show in a 16:9 format tbh

I understand why people enjoy this scene because we get to see what happened that day. But, what i found something saddening that people are realizing is that this is a full-blown genocide. We're seeing a full nation, people who have done nothing to deserve this and are known to be peaceful, being wiped out, every single one of them.
No trace of air benders and no trace of their cultures, just empty buildings.
We were all told what genocide is and how many people have done it, but this here? This is not just genocide. It is the death of a single race. Never to be seen for almost 160 years.

The Nomads put up more of a fight than I'd thought they would have, given how the Fire Nation had a buff and the Air Nomads were a much more peaceful group. Also, why were both genders at the same temple? I recently heard the Air Nomads practiced segregation (Males were at North and South temples, West and East were for Females)
It was explained on this episode that both temples are gathering at the same temple for Comet festival. The fire nation knew and attacked and unalived all of them.
This really has the same vibe as Order 66
This scene was so hard to watch. As kids, we only saw the aftermath of the Air Nation Genocide and saw Gyatso’s skeleton but seeing it happen in the live action series was beyond devastating.
The details are actually amazing!
1. The tornado not only blocked the bridge, but was also deflecting countless fire attacks.
2. The fire bending is so enhanced that it can break buildings without much effort.

4. Gyatso suffocating the fire benders proved that a forbidden technique is a last resort and also shows how powerful he is, especially being able to challenge Sozin.
Also having all nomads due to the festival makes more sense than the cartoon. It makes the attack make sense not only for the power, but I would imagine Sozin anticapted that a possible avatar would be formally announced on such a historic occasion.
For a group of people who were "pacifist" the air nomads were deadly fighters

Hence why the fire nation even needed the comet to win their ambush and most of moves would have likely not even kill the fire nation soldiers just knock them out hard compared to what an air nomad who was merciless like yangchen or zaheer might do

I myself actually love Sozin's personal involvement. Say what you want about him as a human or about his vision of the world, but a ruler who fights in the first ranks with his men has my respect.

The bending is much powerful, the level of intensity the fire was strong and bright.

Regular folks don't often use it but religious and spiritual people, like when they're in a church or temple often call their peers brothers and sisters anyway, it's not for inclusion. Air nomads are monks so it makes sense that they call their peers 'brothers and sisters'.

All four nations lived in harmony. Then everything when the foreigners came. They twisted and manipulated every nation into trading and soon realize there’s a submission trick and only the fire nation was promised their empire and took the deal and thus harmony was destroyed. The fire nation were soldiers of the greater foreign army and thus the air nomads were those who refused and resisted their submission the most. And using the comet, the fire nation and force benders were able to cause massacres across the air nations and soon many would have to submit or face death. But not all would surrender their sovereignty and would fight for their right to be free.
live adaptation might get complaints for not being the original series (cause that's exactly what i see most fans complaining about and actually want) but darn, it gave no mercy when it came to the parts that indicated they were brutal
Gotta admit that showing the Fall of the Air Nomads and how other people died by Firebenders hands was a good touch, because it shows how merciless the Fire Nation is
