  • Scholars generally accept that the Book of Isaiah was at least partially written by the prophet Isaiah during the eighth century BC. However, there's also evidence that other authors made additions.
In this video, Professor John N. Oswalt tells us why.

You said it, Isaiah saw the future, he was filled with the spirit of God and all time periods were revealed to him, since he was filled with God he was not limited by time and space. He saw the crucifixtion of Jesus 700 years in the future, so therefore Isaiah could have easily written the whole book in his lifetime. There was no limit to what he could see, he was a true prophet of God of the highest order.

Jesus had no problem claiming that Isaiah wrote it and the most amazing prophecy is found in Isaiah chapters 52-53. Only a prophet of God could have written this.

Isaiah wrote it all, all 66 Dead sea scrolls were all together one Isaiah. He saw the future because God showed it to Him.

That's a faith position, but there is no data to back this up. A scholar can't accept this conclusion without some evidence to support it.

If that is what Josephus believed, it seems likely that he was mistaken, since large parts of our modern book of Isaiah hadn't yet been written.

In the historical account, Antiquities of the Jews, written by Josephus, it records that upon entering Babylon the Jews presented the scroll of Isaiah to Cyrus showing him the prophecy containing his name.
There was only one Isaiah and he was given inspiration by the one who “from the beginning, foretells the outcome.”

Have you ever read the text of the Cyrus Cylinder? Apparently Cyrus was under the impression that his patron deity was Marduk, not YHWH. I guess he was just wrong huh? Isaiah would know better than Cyrus which deity he was being aided by in his conquests. Maybe YHWH's "anointed" was allowed to worship Marduk, maybe YHWH wasn't as jealous and covetous of other deities as he let on.

He is arguing that Isaiah is high quality literature, and high quality literature is not written by multiple people, therefore it was only written by one person. This is a weak argument. I think parts of Isaiah may be good literature, but other parts of it are extremely hard to follow and extremely dry and banal. Anybody can write literature that is extremely dry and banal, even a committee of people can do that. I think the stronger evidence for Isaiah being written by multiple authors is that prophecy isn't real, and neither is a human that can magically divine the future. But it is very easy for a human to forge a prophecy, pretending that it was written in the past to predict future events. Daniel is a fantastic example of that.

@@johngrey9337 chapters 1-39 contain some work from Isaiah himself. 40-50 were written later, during the exile (about 200 years later) and the rest were written about 70 years after that.
You can see this for yourself. The writers stop calling themselves "Isaiah" after chapter 39. That's because Isaiah didn't write it, and the authors never intended for us to believe Isaiah wrote it.

Doesn't really matter who wrote it it's definitely a man speaking pretending he's a god speaking but God knows the future and all these prophets talk about future wars with bows, arrows, swords and Chariots so anyone claiming that Isaiah speaks about anything past the time of gun powder they are lying.

    • @LavaDesert

As a Muslim perspective, I will explain. God can perform all miracles. Yet regarding the Virgin Birth in the Quran, it is not explicit that it was a miracle or technological secret known at that time. Another point to make which may be a little out of the box, is God spoke to man in terms he could understand as being primitive at that time. So, what we know as a miracle may actually be a means outside our understanding and capability, but for God he is unlike anything of his creations, and outside of time itself which he created, and able to do all things.
