You will ALWAYS feel like you 'smell yourself'. I've had an ostomy since I was 72 hours old, I'm 25 now, and I constantly feel like I smell my bag. I loved your tips!
Can't believe there's a channel like this but I'm so grateful because now I literally don't feel so alone with my struggles I've been having ever since I've had the colostomy bag! I just have to say it takes a very confident person to come on youtube and make a video discussing something so uncomfortable or embarrassing to talk about in such detail especially as a female not sure what made you decide to create this channel but I just have to commend you and thank you because now I feel like I don't have to be so uncomfortable or embarrassed when it comes especially to the topic so thanks for not only informing but also comforting
I'm so glad I'm not alone when I think I can smell my bag!!! I've done the same, asked those that I know would be honest and tell me the truth if they could smell my pouch too! Haha. The things that connect us eh 😊
I’ve done the same thing too, in asking people if they can smell any odor on me from my ostomy bag and got the same answer as you did, which was, “NO.” So, I think it is psychological. Thank you for sharing your ideas and video.
I can relate to this. I drive a bus for a living and sometimes I hear the passengers moan that the bus stinks. Paranoia start’s to set in. But again my friends tell me, I don’t smell. Good tip I use are extra strong mint’s in my bag. Helps a lot…
Thank you Amber for this channel. May God bless you. My dad had an Ostomy Bag and all of his immediate family were his support force even when he was at first frustrated with the bag. Thank you and thank you for what you do.
Same here...Sweetie says no when I ask if I smell. Scented products do not agree with me but I have a small baby powder in my supplies and sprinkle some on my bag when I empty it, when guest come or before I leave the unit. Just in case. I read an article online and hydrogen peroxide, spray cooking oil, vanilla, mint tictak, peppermint oil and mint mouthwash were all suggested above and beyond the medical and corporate recommendations...all cheaper and already in most homes...

You nailed it, Amber. My name is Doug Nelson. Your video was very useful. I happen to be a pilot, I have been using hand sanitizer in my pouch or bag. I’m wondering if this is OK because it does actually take orders away. Otherwise I use a lubricating deodorant I purchased from Edge park. I believe it’s referred to as brava, company name. But still in curiosity, referring to using hand sanitizer in the bag. Thank you, Doug Nelson
I’m also a pilot and about to go into surgery. It’s refreshing to see other pilots on here. I’m very worried about my medical. I currently fly FAR 121. Any tips or suggestions on how to fly with a bag would be greatly appreciated. I’m new to this whole thing so haven’t really come to terms with everything. I’m mostly worried about blow outs while flying.
Hello, It’s me, Doug Nelson, the pilot knocking at your door again. Regarding ostomy odor. I have recently discovered through the company of Hollister, - M9 odor eliminator drops. It is not a camouflage solution, again. It is a Or eliminator. This stuff is a miracle breakthrough. Go beyond the manufactures directions, stating just use a few drives, instead just give it a good squirt, perhaps 5 teaspoons.. And also for those who are concerned about the embarrassing gas noise output. I have been using liquid or gel anti-gas capsules. Use 2 to 3 and feel secure. Sorry I cannot remember the name I purchased that CVS, but there’s somewhat of a blue color a little expensive but well worth the money. God bless all of you. See you down wind.
Never felt down like this days, even my classmate is trying to not sit close to me, I am very angry at myself. No one know that I have an ostomy. When I empty my bag I put water inside the bag to wash it from the inside, I am afraid I am making the smell worse.
When using the adapt, do you pour it in after emptying your bag or before emptying? Im new to this and really looking for tips to make this journey easier!
After emptying. I use a 2 part bag, so i detach it, empty at the toilet, then spray it with hot water, and at the end, I give a final rinse in the hand washer. Once clean, I pour some drops of adapt combined with stop odor plus, and then attach it back.
I feel the same way about my bag smelling but my wife says no.. I just the M9 blue drops in my bag for order. Helps a little. Thanks to your suggestion I just ordered Axe mens body spray to use on my Convatec pouch. Your videos are informative and entertaining!
Although this doesn’t have anything to do with bag odors, great ideas btw. What do you and others use to keep barrier from coming up and loosing its adherence when showering and swimming?
I have had one for the last 15 years. I use dish soap to wash my skin before applying the barrier, and rinse well. Unlike hand soap dish soap leaves no residue. I also use a hair dryer to make sure skin is totally dry. I change mine once a week. If parts get loose at edges before that I use Ostobond to glue the edges back until I'm ready to change. Change it in the morning before you eat or drink.
Imp imp imp I have had zero odor for 4yrs now. What I discovered was a real game changer for me. Take pepto bismol twice a day (their little plastic cup - 1 at night and 1 in the morning) until the odor disappears. First time I did it, it took about a week. You can discontinue the pepto bismol when the odors gone. Every now and then the odor starts to come back I start the pepto bismol again and within 1-3 days odor is gone again. It was a real game changer for me because I was very very paranoid about smelling. I usually buy the 2pack walmart brand for $5.47!!!! Pretty cheap. Hope this helps someone.
I just sent a message to my doctor to see if he thinks this may work for me. Since I'm currently undergoing medical treatment with several medications, I do need his input. Thanks for sharing this.

How does one handle a long car ride with high output ostomy? I empty bag right before trip. But bag started filling about 15 minutes into trip and there was no bathroom in site. Thanks for your honest & open diaries! I’m new to all this, so every tip helps. One question I haven’t found an answer to: how do I quiet or muffle my bag?! I’m in quiet settings around people a lot, and somehow my stoma knows that, and chooses that exact moment to create the weirdest sounds! Help!?
You are so welcome! I wear my bag tucked in to my pants and I feel that helps. Many people feel that wearing an ostomy cover helps muffle the sound as well. I know what foods typically cause more gas and rumbling (like soda and beans) so I try not to eat those when I know I will be around a lot of people. 🤗
I totally get it though. I’m a teacher and there have been times when my class was quiet and my stoma rumbled 😂 No one seemed to notice even though I thought it was loud. I think others think it’s someone’s stomach growling.
Squeaky fart noises here! I never eat beans or drink soda. But I have added garlic back into my diet. I think cauliflower is the worst for me when it comes to producing gas and smell

@Weapon X215 AT Hello... I have had this question myself actually. Gas and fear of leaks-- or worse, explosions-- while I'm sleeping have made many disasters in the past for me. Only one thing has really helped me get back to sleeping and not stress about messes that don't happen anymore. If you have a thin or watery output, try the ConvaTec Diamonds Sachets or a product that works the same way. 1 sachet in the pouch reduces gas as well as absorbs liquid output and odors, and the pouch will stay flatter against your tummy. They don't add to the content, so they work great. Hope this helps. Be safe and well. ~Peace!
Ostomy Diaries ok cool. I will start trying to do that. The Dr has me on all these meds to thicken up my stool and now he wants to put me on a morphine sphincter. Which I don't really want to really do.
Very informative deodourising topic with some products suggestions from known manufacturers. I love the alternative do-it-yourself ideas and will be good for those people that can't wait for the products! I'm British and it sounds unusual that you have to pay in the USA - we have the National Health Service and everything is free on prescription. It'd be interesting to know how much an illness could cost someone like yourself?
Oh my soul..... you don’t even want to know. For example if I did not have insurance my medication I receive by infusion every 8 weeks would cost $12,000 per infusion. My Ostomy bags are $3.50 for ONE BAG. Thanks for watching! I like sharing those do it yourself tips for people who may need that option. Blessings to my British friend!
Good that insurance is there for you. I also have infliximab infusions every 8 weeks and the cost to NHS is similar to $12k. Lucky to have treatment and keep healthy.
I am Australian and became an ostomate just after Christmas last year. To date I am one of three my surgeon could not reverse so I am keen to know more now it's permanent. Australian Medicare subsidises my supplies and I have a $70 annual membership fee and pay $20 postage for each monthly order.

Jenna Kranich thank you I've seen him before and I kinda like some of his materials but then again I don't. So I don't really watch him anymore.
So far the best advice I get is from Amber. I find more information here then anywhere else
You are soooo lovely thank you Amber xx
Thank you
Thank you!
Much worse in the Philippines
I am Australian and became an ostomate just after Christmas last year. To date I am one of three my surgeon could not reverse so I am keen to know more now it's permanent.
Australian Medicare subsidises my supplies and I have a $70 annual membership fee and pay $20 postage for each monthly order.
@@jo-annel.wright2975 there can be quite a few things to understand and know about a stoma but ultimately it gives a much better life than one that was a struggle with before.
I've found that all the bags and accessories need to be tried to find the right fit and comfort for yourself. Hope that goes well.
Love you tips
Thank you! :)
