9/11 Stories: John Feal

  • Now the leading 9/11 community advocate, John Feal joined the rescue and recovery at Ground Zero only twelve hours after the collapse of the twin towers. He worked on “the pile” just five-and-a-half days before he suffered what is considered the worst injury of the clean-up and recovery. On September 17, 8,000 pounds of steel crushed Feal’s foot. John spent 11 weeks in the hospital, surviving gangrene and sepsis. He was told he might lose his entire leg below the knee, and feels fortunate to have lost “only” half of a foot. He says he is lucky because he is still here, close to 20 years later, doing what he loves: helping people.
It was maybe two to three days after his release from North Shore University Hospital in Plainview, Long island when John sought therapy: mental health therapy. It was at group therapy where he first met other ailing 9/11 first responders, suffering a slew of health issues no one could explain. John Feal launched The Feal Good Foundation, to help these ailing 9/11responders with the basics: food on table and rides to chemotherapy. The numbers of ailing first responders grew. They needed more than volunteerism. They needed legislation. John Feal, the advocate, was born. This barely high school graduate has helped pass 13 pieces of legislation, not only helping ailing 9/11 first responders, but some 400-thousand others who were exposed to the cancer-causing 9/11 dust . Most don’t realize their health issues are scientifically linked to the 9/11 toxins or that protections are in place if they get sick in the future. Feal continues his mission to help them.
When John Feal dies, he wants a simple tombstone with no name, no dates, just two words on his tombstone: “He Tried”.

Prayers and blessings to these police officers and fire fighters, true heroes of humanity. People can have problems and addictions but they are still people and these amazing people had no prejudices towards anyone.they should all be given some kind of special ceremony and badges of honour, medals for bravery.

Powerful testimony! WHY would these heroes have to FIGHT for any help from our government after putting their lives on the line?! I’m sure any one of us in the US would happily give our tax dollars to causes like these soldiers; and brave and selfless men like you, John Feal! God bless you! Thank you for all you have done and are doing! 🇺🇸 ❤️

John is just keeping it real. We need more people like him. The world would be a better place if there were. Suffering can make one bitter or better. Clearly, it is the latter.

One of the most fascinating, if not the most fascinating, people I’ve ever heard. I’ve never heard of him before considering all he had done in his life. It’s unusual for a person to talk about empathy so much. Only because he’s experienced the depths of agony and brutal pain physically and mentally. The best interview I’ve ever seen also. Shellie is superb. She knows her part. Both are truly what you call authentic. Thank You. I watched the whole interview right through. I didn’t want to stop listening. I will share this.

Underneath that exterior of your self-label of “aggressive”, I see a traumatized teddy bear. I’m glad you did EMDR (!). It is a wonderful resource. You do your dear mama a credit with your new perspective on material things. Maybe it took awhile to get there, but you got there. Your giving will go such a long way and give you a deep seated happiness. You are going in the right direction. KEEP GOING!!! Thank you so much for sharing your 9/11 story. I truly appreciate it, and I know that I’m not the only one...

John Feal, you're the best of us. Your experiences, your outlook, your approach to life, to trauma, to adversity, to personal loss and trials, and to helping others is so very inspiring. I'm humbled by you. I've always felt very empathetic towards others and tried to help when and where I can, but you put thoughts, wants, desires, feelings and ideas into action and do real, tangible good for others. Nothing stands in your way. I'm inspired and humbled. You keep doing you - you're doing great things!! Hugs and appreciation!!❤

This is my feeling too, giving is the greatest feeling ever and fighting for justi ve,it takes bravery, but never give up against tyranny, revolution doesn't need to involve violence, words in of themselves are swords . The truth speaks for itself and lies cannot stand against evidence. It's always the suited and booted psychopaths that think they can stand on the apparently helpless as long as we have freedom of speech,we have power to speak what is morally right. I hope my legacy will be my heart for fairness ,never judging or arrogant, if I can bring anything to the world, let it be love, despite the bullies who hate these characteristics. I'll never stop saluting those who embody everything I want to be. I may have flaws but my heart still feels and my instinct is to be fair and kind to all. This is true humanity. The love is so much more powerful than the things who brutalise without a care,to hate and lie,how much brighter is the light than all the darkness. I'm the same as this guy, uniting people who rejected each other. I soo agree with this guy, empathy respect and common courtesy, that's the foundations of teaching kids but always by demonstration as adults.

TL;;DR-- by new baby clothes on super clearance and make pretty baby/toddler things for women's shelters. They rarely get new stuff or pretty stuff.
He mentions a good deed for domestic violence: I'm reminded of a thing my mom does--- she uses very fine crochet thread, or 2 strands of DMC to crochet yard square 100% cotton receiving blankets (it's what people use to do in the 1940s and earlier). My mom then searches baby stores and buys new baby clothes on super clearance. She then matches the colour and/or theme of the the clothing to 2 receiving blankets, gift wraps them (puts color/age/theme on the box) and then donates them to women's shelters. She's been told they really appreciate it because the women there hardly ever get anything new or pretty. Also, because most receiving sold these days are to small--my mom's blankets actually eff-ing work.

Thank you John! Holy cow you say it like I say it. I have been listening and saying, “Yes, exactly”, “Ditto”, “Your damn right John”. It’s so true, government state or federal level should not even think about money when it comes to our first responders and veterans needs. When it comes to 9/11 first responders, responders, volunteers there should never be a question from the government state or federal level ever….it should be from them, “how can we help.” Thank you for being you.

I knew the minute Condoleezza Rice's letter assuring workers it was safe to work at Ground Zero was on the news Ground Zero wasn't a safe place to work. My son's friend was there from Day 1. She headed up the archiving of stories and objects for the City of New York. The collection would become the Museum. I believe she died not long after it opened. Her lungs those of an 80 year old smoker though she'd never smoked and was in her late 30's. That you had to form a Foundation so workers could receive the compensations due them shows the mean, anti-American even philosophy of the Republican Party since Eisenhower. I thank you for your selfless efforts to right the wrongs against the Responders of Ground Zero.

@LillianArch: No, no, no, that’s just establishment Democrat propaganda by the mainstream media and these talk show hosts. it’s not JUST the Republican Party, it’s BOTH the Republicans and Democrats, because they both take donor money, and the dynamic is that the Republicans do the awful shit and the establishment Democrats LET them. That’s why we keep having close elections with awful Republicans to this day, because the Democrats BARELY fight. Al Gore should’ve CRUSHED Bush in 2000, but he didn’t. Elect real progressives
