Fully agree had a friend that had a Z3 never had a problem with it. Got rid of it and bought a used about the same year Z4. He is a joke that he never seen it because it was always in the shop. Sure probably gotta beat beat one butZ3 had more character
Love my e89 Z4.. but my z3 will always have a special place in my heart. Not as powerful not as well equipped, not as refined. But you can't deny those curves.
Having owned both a Z4 and now a Z3, there are many differences between the two cars. Our Z4 was a 2006 2.0 with 55k miles. The Z4 is a fantastic drivers car with excellent handling and a ‘daily’ user vehicle. The Z3 is a real old school roadster. Our Z3 is a 2.8i pre-face lift wide body version. IMO, it is not the drivers car the Z4 is, due in most part to the hybrid suspension set-up and the fact that it is a generation earlier than the Z4. If you want a modern drivers car you can use every day, then the Z4 would be the choice. If you want something a little different with old school values, then look at the Z3. The 2.8i engine is a gem, smooth linear power with reasonable fuel consumption and something different to drive. Both are lovely cars, find a good one and enjoy!
I used to own a 3.0 Z3. It was blue and I loved that car. My neighbour reversed into it and wrote it off so I got a Z4 instead. Have to say, the Z4 feels more refined and more like a car, but the Z3 had something raw and dangerous about it. I also used to get more positive comments driving the Z3. I love both cars. Great video Joel, as always.
I have bought my 2.8 l straight 6 Z3 with full M package (suspension, seats, steering wheel, all electric) last October with just 36.000 Km on the clock and have driven it ever since as a true roadster, top down even in our Mallorca winter (10° C). This car is so much fun it should be taxed just for that! I totally love the „curves“ (most sexy booty) the M-gills and the low, wide stance. And the sound of the 2.8 when you floor it is „noticable“ and you get turned heads quite regularly. And smiles and a wave at pedestrian crossings! I have had several good cars in my time (I‘m 71 years old) including a 5.0 l V8 Mustang, but this is easily the most fun to drive car I have owned. And driving it in the spectacular landscape of the most beautiful island on earth helps too! Thanks for the informative and fair comparison of the 2 beauties!
Thanks for the video. Both cars are great. I bought a 98 Z3 2.8 5 speed this year. I love it. It is a little snug. I replaced the tires and the ride and handling are very good now and much quieter. Greeting from Tennessee
Having left this comment a week or so ago, I’ve been cross-shopping many many Z3 & 4’s and it’s come to this: Going to haggle and prospectively pick up an 03 Z4 2.5 this morning! Toledo Blue 5sp w/ 85k. Looking forward to replacing my 94 Miata with a newer, more advanced, and comfortable ride as my MX5 is all but a stripped AutoX monster for the street with zero amenities. Looking forward to some grand motoring. Cheers for the content and happy to join “the tribe”. Great day to all-
For me, the Z3 is the one to go with. The Z3 feels like an old school BMW with enough modern conveniences (AC, cruise, heated seats, one touch down windows, etc.) to make it more livable as a canyons/fun driving car. You can't buy a car today where you can look down at the road out the side door. In that way it's kind of the best car if you'd like to have a motorcycle, but don't want to be in as much danger. I did check out a Z4 before buying and its a weird thing. The Z4 probably has every upgrade consumers said they wanted, but it ends up feeling like a "product" with a lot of the driving feel muted. And, since its a plastick-y, more modern design it ironically feels more outdated since its no longer new, yet also is not classic feeling. Its definitely the better "car" if its a daily driver, but a worse Z for backroads driving if this makes sense. I'm not trying to insult the Z4, just giving my impressions. Both are good cars, the Z3 is just great with regard to classic car feeling and road feel. Installing MRoadster strut housings, springs and Koni yellows really improves the handling and road feel as well. Happy Roadstering!
Really enjoyed your video. Your friend commented about the smooth ride. I had a 2000 Z3 with 128K miles. It had lots of creaks and rattles. Then I found it's twin brother. Same year. Same color combination. But the new car had 41K miles. The new car offers an entirely different ride. So smooth and quiet. Totally different than the high mileage car.
I have had both cars, the Z4 in New England in the winter driving was a disaster and I cannot count the number of times I came off the road, plus it sounded like a "bucket of bolts" driving at any speed. It was a 2004 model. I now have recently purchased a totally restored 2001 3.0i Z3 which is a dream to drive here in Florida. The acceleration is amazing and it leaves most other cars in the dust! It is smooth to drive and in fact I picked the car up in Nashville (sight unseen) and drove it back to Tampa FL., 670 miles without a hiccup. In my experience the last wide body versions of the Z3 with 3.0 liter engine is far superior.
For me the judgement is very easy: The Z3 has the much more harmonic design. This refers to the outside shaping and appearance as well as to the design of the dashboard. On the other hand the manufacturing does not show the quality, one expect from BMW. The Z4 does not reach my heart at all! But it is of a better Qualität, that's for shure! I would never change to the Z4, if I would have to change my car, I would choose a Mercedes 280SL Pagode or a 190SL.😂
That's great! I think this has been the most enjoyable and interesting video you've done, Joel (and there have been many!) (P.s had my Alpina out a bit in this weather but the Z4M has sadly remained locked away in storage)
Hey Joel I've been watching a lot of your videos and you've really helped me justify my obsession over a z4! So much so that I'm going to go pick up my Z tomorrow! You have a uniquely wholesome personality and I am excited to watch you and your channel grow because it definitely will! Never lose that passion! Peace and love from the U.S.
Cool guest, he seems like a natural. I did choose a Z4 over a Z3, so there's the answer. But the Z3 is still a great car in its own right. Proper old school 90s bone shaker.
I got worn out motorcycling from Vermont to Los Angeles yearly. I wanted a windshield, roof, stereo, and a heater. I like old bikes and cars, but had horrible luck with every vintage roadster in my price range (Fiat 124, MGB, Midget, Spitfire). So I drove several Z3's both 4 and 6 cylinder and two Z4's. Being I was essentially looking for an enclosed motorcycle with some storage, I had a serious preference for the 1.9 four cylinder Z3. I can be driving through mountain switchbacks and thrash that perfectly balanced little car so hard that I keep up with skilled motorcyclists. I do not want to race high school Johnny in his Mustang at stop lights. I do not want a heavy engine in front of me or to feel like I'm in a heavy modern car, although I do sometimes wish I had a little more uphill highway torque when accelerating - but I would not be willing to trade the thrill of feeling the road for it! The four cylinder Z3 is the last of the classic roadsters, in the vein of the old British cars. I bought one of the least expensive ones I found with high miles, thinking I'd run her to death. Vermont - Los Angeles four times and still thrashing it hard with 222,000 miles currently. She leaks fair amount of oil from the common m44 places (about a quart / 2000miles). The little bit of water that gets in the trunk is quite annoying. The plastic interior is deteriorating in places. The airbag light (common problem) keeps me from inspecting in VT. BUT I LOVE THIS CAR. And it does have cruise control ;-)
Haha. Not at all mate, very much enjoyed filming and learning more about your car! Video could have quite easily been double the length and still interesting!
Been waiting for this since you teased us on Instagram earlier. Always had a thing for the Z3, I remember watching it on old Top Gear many many years ago when Tiff Needell tested it on the mountain roads and then again against the TVR. Would love one alongside my Z4
Please don't refer to Z3 and Z4 as convertibles, they are true Roadsters (two seater, engine at the front powering the rear wheels with option to go open top). Joel, shocked that you didn't mention the clamshell bonnet and side gill vents on the Z3 is a classic design! Amir won that aspect for sure. And get that glove box fixed, the more you learn to fix your car the more you appreciate the design or lack of design 😁
Z3 was my first choice when shopping for my very first car back in 2001 but end up with nsx because I loan from bank very little. Thinking to get Z4 in the future because I just love convertible.
Bought a z3 3.0 2002 in 2011 for 6.5k mint condition. Still is mint and 34k miles with every extra and in sienna red wouldn't sell it even for 11k now. A keeper. Its quick enough and the looks are now getting a lot of attention. Still even original exhaust that looks a Yr old. After 18 yrs. Best car I will ever own. Under the bonnet like a new car, as is the interior. Cruise control, heated seats, power hood, Harmon kardon entertainment, split rim standard m sport alloys etc etc. What more could I want. Way better than a z4 imo
2024 March 10th, I rolled a 93 Del Sol and upgraded to a 97 BMW Z3. Been cramming knowledge to learn about them in the last few days. 86,000 miles 6 cyl don't know what size yet, Very well maintained by retired airline pilot paid $5300.00. Automatic though almost bought a Silver 3.0 7 speed for $7,000.00 in Seattle and another white one in Puyallup WA, but neither party got in touch in time. The one I got is black and was routinely garaged.
Another well done video. I have an 03 Z4 3.0 6spd with sport package. The biggest reason I have it over a Z3 is the seating position. I'm 6'2" and my head is quite a bit above the windshield.
Great comparison Joel. I have just committed to buying a 2006 Z4 2.5l based on your vids. You have convinced me and my wife of the benefits of the 4 over the 3. Well done mate!
owned a Z3 1.9 for a couple of years as my daily driver and have to say i thought it was one of the best balanced cars i have owned, yes a bit more power would have been nice on a couple of occasions but the handling was exellent with the lower weight. raw and connected driving experience and one for the enthusiast and having done loads of work on it i can vouch for its build quality - wish i hadnt sold it!
Nice video - once I decided to give up MGs the Z3 vs Z4 was discussed. I love the Z3 look but the Z4 won due to 1. comfort and mainly on width as I like to drive without rubbing shoulders and my wife is an amateur power lifter and I am not exactly small either. 2. The 3 litre straight six as I really wanted a six and the Z3s were never really designed for them and have that issue with the rear subframe. Both the Zs are nice cars but I think the 4 has the edge on a longer drive.
Great video guys! I love the Z cars most fav being the E37 and E85 like you have featured (side note my Z3 has a powered top). I think the looks of the Z3 are the best of the Z family as it’s just a modern classic and will age quite well. The refinement in the newer models will certainly be appreciated but one think I like that you said was that the Z3 gives that classic British roadster feeling which is what driving is all about, the experience. Also, IMHO the hydraulic steering of the Z3 and cars of that generation is so much better than numb electronic steering especially when in a sports car. Just gives you that connection and information you need. Thanks again and maybe one day I’ll pick up a beautiful manual E85 Z4 to keep my Z3, MX-5 and Porsche 987 company. Cheers!
Don’t let this distract you from the fact that don’t forget Hector is going to be running three Honda civics with spoon engines, and on top of that, he just went into Harry’s and bought three t66 turbos with nos, and a motec exhaust system.
haha. I own a 96 z3. and recently I detailed a z4 for a guy on my billiards league. I couldnt tell him that I always thought the z4 body shapes looked funny. but I did tell him how jealous I was of his cupholders. you have no idea how awesome those things are, until you dont have one.
I had the same '99 2.0i facelift Z3(blue) 10 years ago. And now I am with the same '03 Z4 3.0i :) The Z3 was a super car but there was a lack of power with the 2.0 m52 engine. Z4 doesn't have that problem :) Z3 2.8i or 3.0i would be great and I guess I would have kept it till now.
I was just watching G29 Z4 vs Supra in the Throttle House channel. In my honest opinion, for the life of me, the rear and the side panels of the supra really looks like our E85 Z4. The Flame surfacing is pretty obvious. The Alfa Romeo 4C's rear also quite similar to the E85's rear. Wondering anyone else have the same observations. I am dead sure the Romeo boys and the Supra boys in designer boots must have drawn inspiration from the Prophet of all Car designers, Chris Bangle himself.
Love the channel mate. In process of buying a 2004 2.5i with the help from this channel :) was looking at Porsche boxsters (watching loads of vids on them etc) but they sound like a nightmare to maintain and started watching ya channel and decided to get a Z4 instead 👍🏻
My z4 has a speaker on the back of both seats. Like a size of the whole seat. I guess it was an extra accessory I didn't know of when I bought it used. The seller didn't even mention it!
Definitely a totally different driving experience. Feels old and not as well put together when driving after being used to the Z4, but a lot easier to get on the ragged edge and have a laugh. Z3 looks better every time I see one too!
Z3 is more fun to drive than the Z4, 1.9 M44 16 valve would be my choice over the six! Z3 feels like a really well sorted E30 with better brakes and steering (which is really what the chassis is). But the roof on the Z4 is miles better and with the roof down there's less buffeting. I think the Z4 is a bit too wide (and got wider in later versions), Z3 just feels the right size. Z4 build quality is slightly better but both lag behind the German built BMWs.
I’m in love with my Z3 2001 2L. Roaster silver color soft top. Bought it December 2021. I seen it for sale on a remote country road here in Gisborne New Zealand and fell for it. I new nothing about the Z3 I just fell in love with the looks and couldn’t take my eyes offa it. It’s all original no modifications. Ok it’s an automatic but I don’t care it gives me an amazing feeling of freedom here down under driving on our amazing winding Waioeka scenic gorge road, that’s better than any race track. I have an amazing mechanic to look after my Sun Worshiper it is what it is.
I am off to pick up my z4 tomorrow. Have not even sat in one yet, so it will be interesting to see whether we like each other. Fingers crossed. Cheers pf
I must disagree with the recurring opinion that you sit "on top" of a z3! You sit just as low to the floor in both! But the z3 is the only modern vehicle that I've driven that catches the British sports car feeling due to it's LOW doors! You're not sitting taller, your doors are sitting lower. Not since my '72 Triumph GT6 have I been able to rest my arm on top of the door like this car; something I missed for 40 years! Again, you'd have to sit on the floor to be lower in the z4. The rest of the car is taller around you in the z4.
@@itsjoel Aha! I knew it! When I was younger, we called each other much worse and got along just fine. I took out the words "knuckleheads" and "noggins." And I'm sending along warm fuzzy feelings and encouraging you to find a "safe place!" In the mean time, I enjoyed the comparos with the Boxster and the S2000. I have a couple of Z3s and a Boxster and my comments were factual observations. The comments "in" the video about sitting "on top" of the Z3 were erroneous opinions; and that's my opinion!
z3 old-school hands down. of cos the z4 has bit more power. BUT rolling oldskool looks so much better. and from my experiences owning both. z3 got the most excellent compliments on great looks. 🍻
I have a 1.9i 4-pot. Economical and supports my daily Mercedes for work and back. A few issues but it is 20 years old. The biggest issue I have is that it sounds crap. The 6-pot cars sound so much better. I did look at a 2.0 6-pot but it was a heap and my budget was very limited. I too did not really like the Z3 when it came out but today with side vents (reminiscent of a world was 2 fighter plane's exhausts I think!) and long bonnet looks the business. I do however like the Z4 but the front lets it down a little compared with the Z3. That Z4 does sound lovely though and I think if I ever move on from my Z3 and I don't swap it for either an SL, SLK or Alfa Brera Spider (my favourite as I owned a 1998 Twin Spark Alfa Spider before my Z3) then a Z4 is my last choice.
I've also got a 1.9, you should remove the soundproofing from under the bonnet to give it a beefier sound. Doesn't cost anything, and you can put it back if you don't like it.
Yes, although it can occur on any Z3 apparently if driven very hard or shifting aggressively. The torque on the 2.8/3.0s means it happens sooner and more dramatically, as the spot welds on the boot floor eventually fail
Z3 4ever, I like the design. The Z4 looks (E85 ) I personally don’t like, ( the later model E89 I do like the looks, but that looks more like a luxury convertible then a Roadster. ( I think I would buy a Mazda/Miata MX5 >2019 and not a Z4 when my 2000 Z3 needs replacement) Thanks for the nice video 👍
Enjoyed the video. I have a Z3M under restoration at the moment and can’t wait to get it back on the road. Only problems for me with Z3 is the lack of leg room being 6ft and only can manage about 200 motorway miles before I need to take a brake. Z4 has a lot more leg room for me but not driven one to compare the drive. Armir would find the ride better if the suspension and bushes were given an overhaul. Subscribed to your channel to check out the rest of your videos.
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed the video! If you own a Z3M you should check this one out first, it’s a drive I got to have in a Dakar Yellow Z3M coupe th-cam.com/video/H_MTojnEP8E/w-d-xo.html
Jurassic Coast Comics I love my ///M by the way. Yes it is a bit snug but not claustrophobic or me in width. The only wish for me was a bit more leg room and a bit more space by the pedals for resting the clutch foot. On the LHD versions there’s more provision for this. If you have your seat all the way back like mine in a RHD version 200 miles is about the max I can do of motorway before I need a break and usually a good time to brim the tank😃 By the way the car has an unusual quirk with the door windows being low makes you feel sitting on top of the car rather then sunk in it. Saying that I love country lane driving in it through 2nd and 3rd gear twisties but beware you can burn through a tank in 150 miles driving like this. On a motorway cruise I’ve managed 275 to 300 miles at 70 to 100mph speeds. I hope that’s helpful I’ve had mine since feb 2009 and have no intention to sell. I’m currently in the middle of doing a restoration. All the rear out, clean up and painted. Just one other thing to consider with ///M cars is ///M tax on some parts. You can’t scrimp on servicing with these engines if you use it well change the oil every 6000 miles
Jurassic Coast Comics Just to add one more thing if your after a more roomier GT consider the E89 Z4 3.5s. Considering one of these and keep my ///M for high days and meets
Always liked the Z3, but first one i looked at, looked like it had been pulled out of a river, so i bought a MGTF. My bus. partner said it was the nicest car she had owned, when she had one.
The shown Z3 is a facelift, the Z4 is not. Also the Z4 lack multifunction wheel, the automatic AC and original radio, making the cockpit look awful compared to mine (2.5i FL). Do a more fare comparision next time.
Fantastic Joel! Outstanding video. Fyi, I have been checking out your channel everyday hoping that you would pit the E85 Z4 against the S2000. Please make it happen. Thanks in advance.
enjoyable interview, but may I suggest doing these in a quieter environment and also without music ... very difficult at times to understand what is being said
I loved my old Z3 until a lady reversed into it, writing it off. I looked a long time for a replacement but all the ones I saw were shabby and had had a hard life. A neighbour suggested I try his E85 Z4... that was it. It really is in a different league. It's like BMW looked at the Z3 and noted everything that was wrong with it then came up with the Z4. I still love the look of the Z3, though, but everything else... so that's what's in the garage now.
Hey Joel !! I’ve been watching your videos for some time now, I will be purchasing my first z3 it’s a 2001 with 70,000 miles for 3,500 U.S. dollars only problem with it is the back window is gone and it still needs to pass breaks and lights inspection but the dealer said he fixed those already, is this car worth the price considering the issues ??
I think the Z3 has a more pronounced classic BMW design, which I absolutely love. The Z4 has a more modern look, which some people love or hate. Me personally, it’s ehh. Z3 just looks better to me.
Good video Joel although slightly unbalanced in having a 2.0 against a 3.0. I must admit to being prejudiced as a long time Z3 owner, I have had my 3.0 Z3 for 11 years and 118,000 miles. Interesting to see Martin's Clown shoe turn up in the middle.
Fantastic video as always Joel. As someone who is in the market and struggling to decide between a Z3/Z4 I found it very informative. Quick question from myself, what are your opinions on buying 3.0L Z3? Still very tempted by a Z4 but it's a hard one. Your opinion would be helpful. Cheers and keep it up!
Hi callum, as the bloke in the vid, I can say that the z3 3.0 would be a better option if you like your car with character, feel, and perhaps more old school looks (as well as rarity). The z4 is a super car but more livable in the sense of it being obviously more modern and put together a bit better. If I had the option to upgrade my 2.0 above to the M54 3.0, I'd take the z3 rather than 4, but obviously I'm biased!
@@rizzrazz thanks for getting back to me. The Z3s looks and styling are very appealing and something I've always had a soft spot for. I was just unsure how it would feel or if it would go like joels Z4. In my opinion the Z3 is something slightly less common, far more desirable and a possible running project for someone lile myself. A future classic. I must say your Z3 is a lovely example and I really appreciate you getting back to me. Cheers!
Z4 is arguably the all round “better car” however, if I was to be able to have both - the Z4 I’d use to get from A to B, and the Z3, to take out for a thrill at the weekend. Z3 demands more from the driver and can therefore be a more rewarding driving experience. If you can only have one car and you’ll be doing lots of miles, would recommend the Z4 as it offers a good compromise between comfort and fun.

Please leave a thumbs up guys as it really helps the channel! Big thanks to Amir for bringing is Z3 onto this series, what do you all think?
I always thought the Z3 looks more like a female car than something a male would drive. No offense to Amir
Really enjoyed it mate thanks for this as I was debating on a z3 but not after this 🙏
Thanks Taylor, glad you found the video helpful.
Gave you a thumbs up :D

Z3 all day. It has so much more character.
If the car brings a smile to your face after you close the door, after you sit in it, it does not matter what it is, it makes you happy. Life is good.
Or when you have a stressful day and a night drive cures it

The 3 is a much more stylish looking car.
That MCoupe overshadowed the entire affair! I love that badass clown-shoe!

Thats a bloody well specced Z3. I love them, definitely has that classic feel, like being able to touch the rear wheel while driving lol

For me, the Z3 is the one to go with. The Z3 feels like an old school BMW with enough modern conveniences (AC, cruise, heated seats, one touch down windows, etc.) to make it more livable as a canyons/fun driving car.
Sorry for interrupting your video on the way to Vanity 😬
What a perfect interruption it was. I’m sure none of us minded whatsoever!
Definitely not mate, top car! Got me looking at the classifieds for an interlagos blue z3m now!
@@itsjoel could you sort a little video featuring Martins car, pretty please
That is a real car !
You should have stopped and been part of the review!!
The Z3 looks stellar
Really want a Z3 now!
I think this has been the most enjoyable and interesting video you've done, Joel (and there have been many!)
(P.s had my Alpina out a bit in this weather but the Z4M has sadly remained locked away in storage)
The Z3 has the edge on looks it may be a future classic.
I disagree! But agree that the Z3 is a great car to look at
@recycle projects LOL The Z4 is beautiful f you talkin about
Hey Joel I've been watching a lot of your videos and you've really helped me justify my obsession over a z4! So much so that I'm going to go pick up my Z tomorrow! You have a uniquely wholesome personality and I am excited to watch you and your channel grow because it definitely will! Never lose that passion! Peace and love from the U.S.
That’s awesome, you’re going to love your Z!
Cool guest, he seems like a natural. I did choose a Z4 over a Z3, so there's the answer. But the Z3 is still a great car in its own right. Proper old school 90s bone shaker.
Yeah both great cars in their own right like you say. Amir was also a fantastic guest!
Cheers joel! I don't half ramble on, haha but ace editing!
It’s such a cool little car!
Brilliant video boys. Getting my manual Z3 tommorow in race red, wish me luck!
@@salmayassine9947 ended up getting a manual 2014 wrx instead.
Jake Ryan how come?
i intend to track the car and convertibles have alot more body roll than rally sedans. And I like the sound of the wrx more.
Show how you put the top up and down!
slow down! How did you do the manual top?
I like the Z3 over the Z4
2024 March 10th, I rolled a 93 Del Sol and upgraded to a 97 BMW Z3. Been cramming knowledge to learn about them in the last few days. 86,000 miles 6 cyl don't know what size yet, Very well maintained by retired airline pilot paid $5300.00. Automatic though almost bought a Silver 3.0 7 speed for $7,000.00 in Seattle and another white one in Puyallup WA, but neither party got in touch in time. The one I got is black and was routinely garaged.
I like the looks of the Z3, and if it had been Z3 with the wider rear arches it would be a no brainer... love the curves and muscle of the Z.
Another well done video. I have an 03 Z4 3.0 6spd with sport package. The biggest reason I have it over a Z3 is the seating position. I'm 6'2" and my head is quite a bit above the windshield.
Thanks for watching!
firestang70 That’s interesting. I’m looking at a few Z4s at the moment. I’m also 6’2” and am wondering if I’ll fit into a Z4 soft top.
Ben Horsley-Summer I fit with room to spare. I’m a thick guy 240 lbs and I fit just fine with regards to width, headroom and legroom.
Great comparison Joel. I have just committed to buying a 2006 Z4 2.5l based on your vids. You have convinced me and my wife of the benefits of the 4 over the 3. Well done mate!
Thank you for watching, and you’ll love the 4!
"Bloody hell she's goes...she definitely goes" .....priceless 😂 Another great video, thanks Joel.
Thanks for watching!
owned a Z3 1.9 for a couple of years as my daily driver and have to say i thought it was one of the best balanced cars i have owned, yes a bit more power would have been nice on a couple of occasions but the handling was exellent with the lower weight. raw and connected driving experience and one for the enthusiast and having done loads of work on it i can vouch for its build quality - wish i hadnt sold it!
Nice video - once I decided to give up MGs the Z3 vs Z4 was discussed. I love the Z3 look but the Z4 won due to
1. comfort and mainly on width as I like to drive without rubbing shoulders and my wife is an amateur power lifter and I am not exactly small either.
2. The 3 litre straight six as I really wanted a six and the Z3s were never really designed for them and have that issue with the rear subframe.
Both the Zs are nice cars but I think the 4 has the edge on a longer drive.
Z3 wins for me due to not having electronic steering and that it was a Bond car!
Another excellent video and great to see the Zed’s side by side Amir seems like a great bloke!
Thank you. Yes Amir is awesome.
Cheers!
On the looks factor, it's Z3 all the way for me.
Z3 & Z4 are both brilliant sports car buys right now and no loser here, thanks for making the vid !
i doubt z3 is sportcar
verialstyle z3 is sport car
Thanks Roger. Completely agree, both great cars at fantastic price points.
i have z3 but i driven z4 3.0 also , and both cars gives so much differences that i love both
Don’t let this distract you from the fact that don’t forget Hector is going to be running three Honda civics with spoon engines, and on top of that, he just went into Harry’s and bought three t66 turbos with nos, and a motec exhaust system.
haha. I own a 96 z3. and recently I detailed a z4 for a guy on my billiards league. I couldnt tell him that I always thought the z4 body shapes looked funny. but I did tell him how jealous I was of his cupholders. you have no idea how awesome those things are, until you dont have one.
Wonderful comparision guys! I think you guys have steered me away from Z3 towards a Z4!! Thank you guys, wonderful to see the drive comparisions.
I had the same '99 2.0i facelift Z3(blue) 10 years ago. And now I am with the same '03 Z4 3.0i :)
The Z3 was a super car but there was a lack of power with the 2.0 m52 engine. Z4 doesn't have that problem :)
Z3 2.8i or 3.0i would be great and I guess I would have kept it till now.
This Channel is underrated. I love your content.
Thank you!
I'd agree, bmws are easier to maintain, parts freely available and costs are lower.
Thanks for watching mate! Enjoy the Z4!
My z4 has a speaker on the back of both seats. Like a size of the whole seat. I guess it was an extra accessory I didn't know of when I bought it used. The seller didn't even mention it!
Great video. I like the Z3 as well, but never had an opportunity to drive one.
Good job Joel ! I love these car comparison videos
Thanks for watching as always mate!
My 99 M Roadster has cruise control and it works. Not the smoothest but it’s functional!
I am off to pick up my z4 tomorrow. Have not even sat in one yet, so it will be interesting to see whether we like each other. Fingers crossed. Cheers pf
Really hope you enjoy it!
Just bought on Friday, it's a spaceship
Two beautiful cars. Such a shame this generation of BMWs weren't better anti-corrosion treated from the factory
I've got a 1998 Z3 1.9 only thing I've had to fix is a water pump
Papa Torr haha no worries buddy. Your opinions are totally valid and welcomed, thank you for watching and sharing.
Ah, Mobil Super 3000. That’s my tipple too. Good man.
Great video! What music you used in the background?
z3 old-school hands down. of cos the z4 has bit more power. BUT rolling oldskool looks so much better. and from my experiences owning both. z3 got the most excellent compliments on great looks. 🍻
BTW I still have both right here.. 98 z3 and 2008 z4
I’ve been waiting for this one 👍
i have a 2001 2.5 z3, a great car
Doesn't cost anything, and you can put it back if you don't like it.
rayalix cheers. Never thought to do that.
Tempted by the old school looks of the Z3 - especially in blue! - but I think I'm heading towards a Z4 when I move on my SLK350.
I've heard tell of the 3.0 and 2.8 tearing the diff mount off because the design wasn't beefed up from the original spec for the 1.9?
Yes, although it can occur on any Z3 apparently if driven very hard or shifting aggressively. The torque on the 2.8/3.0s means it happens sooner and more dramatically, as the spot welds on the boot floor eventually fail
Great video Joel, love the 2 side by side :)
Z3 4ever, I like the design.
The Z4 looks (E85 ) I personally don’t like, ( the later model E89 I do like the looks, but that looks more like a luxury convertible then a Roadster.
( I think I would buy a Mazda/Miata MX5 >2019 and not a Z4 when my 2000 Z3 needs replacement)
Thanks for the nice video 👍
Ah I think I can guess who’s Dakar it might be👍
Jurassic Coast Comics go and have a sit in one and see you might be ok. It’s only on very long drives I wish for a bit more leg room
Z3 coupe 2.8 for life
Where can you get a hardtop from?
Always liked the Z3, but first one i looked at, looked like it had been pulled out of a river, so i bought a MGTF.
My bus. partner said it was the nicest car she had owned, when she had one.
The shown Z3 is a facelift, the Z4 is not. Also the Z4 lack multifunction wheel, the automatic AC and original radio, making the cockpit look awful compared to mine (2.5i FL).
Do a more fare comparision next time.
I have a Z4 and break my neck every time a Z3 drives by. I want one a lot.
Hell nah Z4 fo life
Make sure you drive one first... after your Z4 you might be disappointed.
Fantastic Joel! Outstanding video. Fyi, I have been checking out your channel everyday hoping that you would pit the E85 Z4 against the S2000. Please make it happen. Thanks in advance.
Thanks Frank. S2000 will be coming to this series.
enjoyable interview, but may I suggest doing these in a quieter environment and also without music ... very difficult at times to understand what is being said
Never cared for the Z3 when it came out, but like Amir, have warmed to them nowadays. Like his car a lot. It would be cool to have both!
Indeed it would!
Great vid!!!
is the 2.0 a 4cyl? we didn't get that model in the states.
It’s 6 cyl!
I'm replacing motorcycle riding with a z3 3.0 so the noises don't bother me. I want the feel of the car. My 328 is for refinement.
Another great vid joel. Both nice nice cars. Amir seems a top man.
Thanks for watching. Amir was a great guest!
Does the Z3 need a Strut Brace to make drivable
Which is faster 0-100?
I have a 3.0 Z3 Roadster, it’s a missile
Good video Joel although slightly unbalanced in having a 2.0 against a 3.0. I must admit to being prejudiced as a long time Z3 owner, I have had my 3.0 Z3 for 11 years and 118,000 miles. Interesting to see Martin's Clown shoe turn up in the middle.
man those are both cool cars, but clean those headlights, that headlight neglect hurt my soul!!
Z3 aged so well
I agree, getting better with age like a fine wine
@@itsjoel Cheers Joel! Your input is much appreciated.
if you want the speed of the Z4 but the looks and the better interior of the Z3 then the Z3M Roadster S54 is the best option
