So I open the concordance and use verses in my sermons that go along with my topic. We are a judgement free church." They also preached an entire sermon on Where are Dinosaurs in the Bible? 🙄

      @Christopher Odegard The love of money is the root of all *kinds* of evil. But I like the sentiment.

    • @BenjaminAnderson21
      @BenjaminAnderson21 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Christopher Odegard "Money is the root of all kinds of evil" and "money is the root of every kind of evil" are two equivalent statements. "Money is the root of all evil" and "money is the root of every kind of evil" are two infinitely different statements. If "all kinds of evil" were to really mean "all evil" (which doesn't make sense assuming that's an accurate translation) then the Bible would be self-contradictory since money hadn't even been invented in Genesis 3 and Adam and Eve somehow still managed to commit evil.

    • @zachpaterson8128
      @zachpaterson8128 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Christopher Odegard I can't speak for the greek (because I cant speak greek), but I just looked up four different translations of the bible (KJV NKJV NIV ASV), and all but the KJV agree its "all kinds of evil"
      I would also point out many evils arent based in a love of money: lust for example has nothing to do with money and is based on the carnal desires of the flesh... unless you mean money as a symbolic stand in for all earthly desires, then sure.

    • @zachpaterson8128
      @zachpaterson8128 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Christopher Odegard The argument you laid out there is suggesting the love of money is rooted in lust, not vice versa. Lust may cause you to *use* money (which is not a bad thing, money is meant to be used), but it's not caused by the love of money. The most selfless, giving person can still be lustful.

    All joking aside, our churches really are in trouble. My church no longer has Sunday School. They have people who are leading services that are not members (they're NEW visitors!!!) And the minister is getting his sermons from an online service. The new church is a bit bigger and I was very skeptical of it because they put up this huge performance before the sermons (and I was also very attached to our old small community). Though, so far, the pastors (there are two) haven’t said anything out of line and actually read the scriptures. I’m still skeptical but at least the singers aren’t trying to out vocalize everyone else.

    People snarking about the offering plate, how exactly is the church supposed to pay for things like electricity or keeping the buildings in good repair, or expanding if the community grows? Seriously, it's just one of those cliche things people say to feel superior. If you think your church is mismanaging the funds, go to another church. Peoples obsession with getting free things really grinds my gears. Salvation is free, thats about it.

      We started a weekly program to give to our building fund to build a building, and I realized I hadn’t been giving any type of offering for the basic needs of keeping the church open so I still give the same amount every week even though the building is finished, and I’ve increased the amount a little bit a couple times. Paper towels and electricity are not magic things available free to churches.

      Social pressure. They send the plate through the rows while everyone is watching and being watched, and use a plate so it's easy to see what you gave. And they do it on purpose. You can't tell me someone spreading god's wisdom wouldn't consider to ask for donations to be given privately. No, they purposely leverage your pride and/or fear of being judged to compel you. I can't believe you really think there's no force involved.

    I recently attended the eleven 22 church, found the hardest time trying to figure out what they actually believe, attended a beginners group, my 'leader' was homosexual, and they were studying 'The Meta Narrative', so I walked out. Haha. Then, I found out they're Methodist, and I actually like Methodists, but not the branch that supports gay marriage. They could've made it easier, by just having a sign I could read walking in. They also had a sermon about how God isn't jealous. 😅 I just laughed at how untrue that is, since the FIRST COMMANDMENT IS, "Thou Shall Not Have Any gods before Me." Sounds pretty jealous & fair to me! Lol God is good, I'm glad He straightened me out.

      As a Methodist myself, this makes me sad to hear, cause that's not at all what I was taught at my United Methodist church. I was constantly told God is a jealous God (heck, I'm pretty sure we sang a Sunday School song about it!), and our church took the stance that homosexuality is wrong, but those that engage in that kind of thing should still be shown love and compassion as sinners. Which I think is a good way to think about it. I really miss the pastor the taught that, good ol' Pastor Dave. He was an amazing guy and literally defined my Christian upbringing (he's not dead, he just got moved to another Church)
      As an aside... what is "The Meta Narrative?" I've never heard of that before, at least not that I remember

It was a Psalm, and the word focused on was 'equity', so combined with Facebook new Metaverse, I thought they're being guided by not by the Holy Spirit, but a 'narrative'. I didn't go back. My church talks to my family and they work together to repeat conversations they had with me 6 months ago. They write down what I talked about and bring up those topics 6 months later. They regularly wear perfumes and colognes that they know will set off my allergies and make me cry the entire service. I went to church and cooked food for 2 hours in the kitchen, served kids food for an hour, and sat down to eat my own dinner with the adults after serving their kids, and the only conversation I could get out of them was a mumbled hi under their breath. My church invites me over for lunch, and the individuals in the church have planned to have the same conversation I had over lunch 6 months ago already memorized. I really do need a new church.
