Made it to cast number 100 and celebrating that milestone with some thoughts on the wines of my adopted home, Washington State. Thanks to all my viewers and subs for the terrific support.
Having completed the three WSET certifications and now almost ready to take the SWE certification, I find your videos an excellent way to study. Your casts are incredibly informative, always touch on the concepts that are essential to understanding the region and the history at the beginning of the video is superb; it puts everything in perspective. Thank you for creating these visual flashcards that are invaluable to those of us sitting for certifications. I just wished that during my WSET studies I had your erudite and well planned presentations. Great job.
I love your videos, just the right mix of science, culture, history, cuisine. Have been scouring the site for something on Oregon wines and have not found it using my phone (my primary listening device while on the road). Is there one and I’m just not finding it? Seems you would have one!

I have watched this cast at least ten times.....lol The quality videos produced by you and Stewart from Wine on the Dime have encouraged me to do my own wine and whiskey review channel that will focus on Washington state wines and distilled spirits in particular but not excluded other wines.....it just won't be the focus. Thank you again and please don't stop.

Great video as always. I agree with you that Washington has some of the best wine the USA has to offer. With Washington being the 2nd largest wine producer in America I still don't see enough wine from there in Connecticut. Maybe I should move to Washington? well anyway congratulation's on number 100 and good luck with your next certification. Thank you as always.
Despite being #2 they get overshadowed by the sheer volume of California production. I think Washington is a great place to make contact with the wine industry. It's very friendly and open here and more low key than in California. So, if moving is ever on your radar, you should definitely give Washington a think. Cheers!

Congrats on the 100th winecast and good luck on your Italy certification! A couple of thoughts/questions on this winecast. With WA (and CSM in particular) being so prolific in the production of Riesling, does the reason why WA would not try to establish Riesling as at least a signature varietal (as opposed to "the" signature) have more to do with the generally bad rap that Riesling has in the US market (i.e. "the curse of the Blue Nun" to borrow from Mike Veeeseth) or is the overall quality not quite there? Also interested in if you have any data or idea on how much production coming from the ~900 wineries is done using WA grapes vs. grapes brought in from elsewhere? I live in Colorado and while we have 2 AVAs and some great wine being produced there are a number of the 100+ wineries in the state that use non-Colorado grapes but are still considered CO wineries.
Thank you! Those are great questions. Though there are tons of wineries in WA that make a Riesling, Riesling production in WA is dominated (in terms of volume) by CSM. I think one of the effects of that has been that many people don't think of WA Riesling as much as they do of CSM Riesling, since that's often their only exposure to a WA Riesling. This isn't meant to be a criticism of the Chateau -- they're incredibly supportive of other wineries and very generous with their research and more power to them for making a lot of good Riesling -- but I wonder if their strong association with grape has kept it from being associated more broadly with the state. Also, as Paul Gregutt pointed out in his Washington Wines and Wineries book, a lot consumers think that CSM is a California company (!), so that hasn't helped either. These are just some thoughts. The question really deserves a more disciplined and research-oriented response. As far as how much juice comes from out of state, I don't have hard data but my impression is, not much. I know several wineries that are selling their juice out of state but I don't know any that are buying (though I'm sure there out there). Keep in mind that for a bottle to say Washington State on it, 95% of the juice has to be from in-state. Anyway, I feel like I've rambled a bit, but I love questions like those. I hope it was helpful. Trust me, you won't be the only one who's surprised. Martedi is my favorite producer (my nick name for their winemaker is "Lord Sangio"). They're out of Woodinville, as is Adams Bench that makes a good (but pricey) Sangio from Red Willow Vineyard fruit. Michael Fiorentino (another Woodinville producer) is good, too. Probably easier to find would be Charles Smith's Guido, which, despite the name, is a good wine. It's only the 7th most planted grape, so there's not an ocean of it in Washington, but I think it's special. I'm either a visionary or a fool. Time will tell. Cheers!

He's always been wise enough to hire very good winemakers. His former head winemaker, Andrew Latta, who was responsible for a number of stellar wines in the portfolio, has his own label, Latta Wines, which is very worth checking out and both of his current winemakers, Brennan Leighton and Katie Nelson, are very talented. Do you like the various Smith wines?

I was born in Oregon, but I've lived in Washington since I was just starting to walk. Hearing about all of these Washington wines makes me very happy.
