Here in Poland we have a OTC ointment (Alantan Plus) used to treat destroyed skin (even after radiotherapy in cancer patients) and it's the BEST lip balm ever, extremely hydrating and doesn't lick off easily. It have 4 ingredients: white vaseline, lanolin (so not vegan, but its used in pretty much every topical medicine in Poland) 5% panthenol and 2% alantoin. 30 grams of ointment is 2$ and chapstick on sale 4$ so amazing price and it last for over 2 months

I never liked most dedicated lip balms because I felt like they never worked for me. Vaseline's petroleum jelly and other medical grade petroleum jelly were the only thing that I trusted as a child. Fairly recently I tried Avene's trixera nutrifluid balm and La Roche Posay's lipikar ap+m balm on my lips in emergency and they worked REALLY well in immediately moisturizing and healing my lips.

I agree. I barely use lip products now. I barely lick my lips. For almost a year now, my lips have been plump and smooth still even after days. I use the tatcha lip mask mostly. You don't need much, and I skip days. I don't wear lip color too often. I use lipgloss maybe once a week. The fenty heat one, but I do like the original formula as well. This definitely a bit more bougie than Vaseline but Vaseline works ok on my lips. I would even get little bumps after about 6 hours when I would use Vaseline. I do need to find a good lip spf.

Hot tip I learned from Dr. Dray. Put Vaseline (or whatever off-brand equivalent you have) on your lips before brushing your teeth. It helps protect your lips from your toothpaste while also just being an effective lip balm.
Vaseline is also great for split lips because it can stop the bleeding and help your lips heal faster.

I'm happy you mentioned the point of what happens when you DON'T use certain lip products. I lived for the Ulta beauty lip oil because I could feel the oils in it, and though it had good longevity, I feel like I needed it once a day. Lo and behold, the second ingredient is Polyglyceryl-2 Isostearate which is essentially a lipgloss base. I'm gonna be a little more careful about choosing lip products especially when I get dry chapped lips!

I put face cream on my lips when I do my skincare, this has changed the game for me. Then I apply lipbalm and I am good for quite some time. It also took me ages ti find a good lipbalm. What I tend to use is anything with hemp seed oil or beeswax (I try to buy as many vegan items as possible, but with lipbalm is a bit more complicated.

I actually apply a tiny dab of Vaseline body lotion (which is what i've been using as my all-over body lotion for years) on my lips straight as i come out of the shower. It soaks in fast and then i go on with lip balm/ lipstick based on my need. Keeps my lips super soft all day. I also apply it just before bed and then a coat of lipbalm on top, to seal it in.
I find this works so much better than continuously applying layers and layers of lip balm all the time lol.

I've trouble with most lip balms out there. Most of them are just super greasy and come off almost instantly, so it feels like they do nothing, except annoy me. I hate it when they're greasy. But I found a really good one from a construction supply store, of all places. Right next to the wood cleaners and sandpapers lol. It's called O'Keeffe's Lip Repair. It contains mostly a bunch of beeswax, but what's so great about it is that it adds sort of a thin film on the lips that isn't sticky or gooey, and it stays there, protecting my lips pretty much all day. I can even eat and drink without needing to re-apply. And it causes no irritation issues what so ever for me.
Burt's Bees also works well for me, even though it's scented. Only problem with that one is the only one of them I like is the honey scented one (also because honey has some great soothing properties) and it's goddamn constantly out of stock lol. So I prefer the wax based lip balms because they're generally not greasy in texture like the petroleum jelly ones often are. I don't care much for sun protection though. I'm not out much in the sun anyway.
My problem is that my lips are just very dry, and when they get dry they get flaky and I can't help but pick at them when they get flaky, which causes them to flake even more. It's a form of skin picking OCD thing (I forgot the word for that) and I've gotten a lot better at not doing that, but I basically need lip balm to keep myself from picking at my lips, because I can't get a grip on any flakes when my lips are all... waxy. I still do it maybe once a week or so, but not excessively (several times a day) like I used to. So I've made a lot of improvement and my lips are a lot healthier as a result of that, but it's still something I'm working on.
I've only on rare occasion had my lips crack and bleed at the corners. I just disinfected it and it healed up on its own within a couple of days. So I never thought of that as something worth bothering a doctor for. My body is really good at taking care of wounds and infections all on its own, as long as I stop subjecting it to whatever caused the issue to begin with and clean my wounds properly.
So while I'd agree that using lip balm isn't an addiction per se, it's certainly something a lot of people become dependent on. And I totally agree that people need to be more careful about what kinda stuff they're putting on their lips. Also gold in lip products?! Wtf, that's dangerous! Even if you're not excessively licking your lips, at least some of that is going to end up inside the mouth and be consumed. Anyway, there are so many sketchy lip balms out there. It's really hard to find something that works for me, so I get overjoyed whenever I do lol.

I swear they make my lips worse
Eos lip balm actually made my have 5 cold sores at the same time
So I tried chapstick and I got another one
So Vaseline and my prescription lip stuff are the things that work
And I feel like lanegie is helping me too
So don’t buy eos unless you want burning
    Or chapstick
And carmex it never helped my lips it made them chapped and crusty

I have diagnosed lip eczema. I thought it was just dry lips, so I had Vaseline on literally 24/7, it doesn't work or really help at all. If you actually want something that will help, get prescription Desonide 0.05% from your doctor. Use it when your lips get irritated only. One tube should last you over a year if you do it right.
Between that, to keep lips soft and hydrated, DO NOT USE LIP BALMS OR LIP SCRUBS, DO NOT USE VASELINE. Use lip oils. The Versed lip oil is by far my favorite, it is also VERY AFFORDABLE.
I hope this helps someone suffering like I was 🥰

Tried aquaphor and it doesn’t work at all, kinda made them worse (why I went to the doc so I could get my prescription for the steroid fat cream)
Now I’ll need to get the fat cream without the steroids, but currently I don’t believe my partner and I have that money (I’m expecting it to cost like maybe 15€ since it’s gone be from the brand Linola) so in the mean time I’m using a trusted, hydrating, cheap lip balm that says it’s for sensitive skin (the Balea sensitive lip balm)

lol I have to disagree. Pretty sure it’s some OCD.
I get dry lips quite often and have tried some lip balms that work for a few days then make my lips flakey. For example tried La Roche posay cica lip balm for a few days, first it felt amazing, then my lips flaked. However when I use a good lip balm, It’s enough for me to use it 3-5 times a week ( for example Laneige balm at night) and my lips are nice and smooth for the next few days without having to apply more. Try switching to a balm that works for you and reduce how often you use it, no need to apply it every 5 mins….

i found out about how lip balms were doing this when i was 13 so i stopped moisturizing overall (as in my entire body) and then only learned 7 years later it’s okay to moisturize my face every day💀

First I thought it was because of my lips until I changed to lip balm that keeps my lips hydrated. I literally used to reapply that those lip balms more than 20 times without realized that. 😂

EOS balms ruined my lips for a long while until I tried a more medical balm and realised it was them that did it when I started back using them. Awful products

Wait so is the laniege sleep mask in the thumbnail part of the problem ? 😢

I used laniege and when I compared it to aloe Vera gel + petroleum jelly ( Vaseline) , the results were better , I think laniege is overrated and it’s pricer compared to Vaseline

Had the same problem for 20 years till I discovered a product that did not make me need to reapply more often than a couple of times a day! I have now permanently switched to that one and have no more issues

Vaseline and this may sound boujee but laneige lip sleeping mask is amazing..... this from a budget shopper that doesn't like lip glosses..... and the lip mask does NOT need to beused every night. I use it 2-3 nights, never scrub , never use lipsticks or balms and just use Vaseline all other times.

If you just Google this, it's literally not possible for your lips to become "addicted" to lip balm. And unless you're using something that has a bunch of shit in it that shouldn't be, then this is bs.
Just get a natural lip balm.... not one that just looks pretty on the outside... pretty simple.
