I found out about these instruments two days ago and thought finally, an instrument that will make me feel like I am some kind of mischievous forest spirit! I bought a Clarke Original today, and I am less mischievous spirit and more 'child with recorder'. But I will get there. Thank you for this video.

@@theminingdwarftmd1881 I've only had mine 2 or 3 days. There's a tune called something like Belle Polka, where I can sound like I know what I'm doing. 🤣

Hi, I am not sure if you will see this message, but I decided to buy a tin whistle for myself (aged 73) but also for my Granddaughter to learn how to play. We have both mastered the intro and practising daily (via video lol) however, we want to move on now, but I can’t find any follow up clips, most jump into tabs etc. My question is, have you done any follow up clips as it will help greatly… Many thanks.. Mel and Mila x PS. Both whistles are in “D”

So this may be a little long but I hope you see this and know how much your videos/tutorials mean to me. You see I first fell in love with this instrument when I saw/heard how beautiful it can sound when I watch Star Trek The next Generation. Picard had a flute given to him which he would play ever now and then. I loved the sound it could produce. But it want until I started to look for "flutes" that I realized that I was looking for more specifically a tin whistle. Once I knew what I was looking for I started to look for tutorials that work best for me and my learning abilities seeing as how I am dyslexic. So learning things the "standard way" with f# and b and a. I am visual learner and the way you explain how, AND show which notes to play was the perfect storm to help me learn how to play. Or I should say will eventually how to play as I don't even have the money to get a cheap whistle. But I thank you for you videos and genuinely wanting to what your joy with not just me but all of the community.
    Happy whistling!

I inherited a tin whistle and song book (multi-language with both music scales and tab notations or whatever you would call the little diagrams of the hole placement) and the only song in it I know is Red River Valley, but I've been killing my own ears with that one note, already forgot what letter was said but, all fingers down except 1 on the top left. Finally after watching this and practicing along I was able to make a sound that is compatible with human ears. Thank you.
Now I'm finally at "child with recorder" level instead of "banshee crying out local deaths" level in craft 😔🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Welp I looked again at the book before posting this, and the note was d. Apparently there's a tiny little plus sign in the diagram reminding me to blow harder.
It didn't explain how to cover the holes with the flats of my fingers, relax my hands, center the mouthpiece just on the tip of my lip, not inside my mouth like a sax, or leaving a wide gap, like a flute, and then run me through the scales though. Some things you really need to see or do to order to learn how to do it **right**

    • @CutiepieTinWhistle
      @CutiepieTinWhistle  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

So pleased this video was helpful.
On a tin whistle, you can actually hit two notes on every hole. One blowing hard, one blowing soft.
One thing that tends to happen is that people blow much harder than necessary when starting out and often end up in what we call 'the second octave' or the high notes straight away, when they should be playing low notes.
That means when you try and play that D+ you need to blow even harder to hit a clean note.
Make sure when you're trying to play that low D (without the +sign) that you're really just breathing very very gently through the whistle.
I have a beginner's course on my playlists that you can follow for free to help get you up and running. Good luck ❤️ and don't forget to enjoy it. x

I suppose it's not really designed for precision and long held notes. It's designed for fun, fast and upbeat tunes played in pubs 😊

Bye the way there's no such place as Northern Ireland, It's Ireland or the north of Ireland 🇮🇪. Soon to be United Ireland. Apart from that well done with your lessons. Slán Go Fóill from the North of Ireland.

That's so silly. It's by and not bye. So silly to constantly be correcting others... 😁

If you’re just getting started I recommend learning to read sheet music (even if it means playing nursery rhymes for quite some time) don’t become dependent on tablature. Then concentrate on playing by ear so you are not a slave to sheet music. This is what I’m doing this go round, as I’ve picked up the whistle again. Don’t compare yourself to others and take all the time you need.

Thank you so much for this video; it's been extremely helpful as I really didn't know what I was doing before. Whereas now I actually have a half decent chance at getting started with this not so seemingly-simple instrument.

Yes, all depends on which hand is dominant usually :) dominant on the bottom in most cases but not always.
