i have lived as an exchange student in Iceland for a year. It was rather a life than a year. I have never been so homesick as I am for Iceland, and Hallormsstaður. It had been six years since I have been there, but since, every night I dream about being there, being with my Icelandic host family, with the friends i made there. My partner even caught me talking in Icelandic while I slept the other night. I cant spend a day without feeling that longing to be back already. If not at night, then it peaks at the morning. I wish i could just go back.
I feel you. I've benne there for a bit more than 2 years. I moved back home 11 years ago. Ön the flight back home I was crying like a little kid, and ever since I feel homesick... 😢
The girl who stares at the ocean. I came to the village one night in the sommer twelve o'clock in midnight-sun . I got a room in a fiskcamp, it seemed okay with sink, table and chair. In the morning I went out on the street to see The old machine ling on the ground . I saw a house that had a history and some were dying it sifted from the windows blood. There is a girl staring at the ocean Paralyzed with eyes cloudy. .She stands all night staring at the ocean wide eyes, a bit swayback. I saw her dancing with sad green eyes dance like she was not here. She seemed to drift around, in her closed world locked to me and you. Who she was, I did not know but everyone I asked who walked past. Until I was told that one black winter the sea had taken her man away from her. There is a girl staring at the ocean Paralyzed with eyes cloudy. .She stands all night staring at the ocean wide eyes, a bit swayback. These staring eyes, autumn green as the sea I watched the depths one evening. They reflected something that only the sea understood sadly, seductive and cold. Up in the hammer she stood and stared across the fjord sometimes she knee down in the angelica. There she stretched out the wind and her wild eyes cry while hope disappeared again. This summer was beautiful, I got enough work It fished and the times were good. But I stood and thought and stared out the window about the girl who was thought to be crazy. One night I jumped op into horror and understood what was crawling in my heart. What seemed to be at first only the curiosity of the heart had found love here. There is a girl staring at the ocean Paralyzed with eyes cloudy. .She stands all night staring at the ocean wide eyes, a bit swayback. The next day I left the first car which moved me south on my way. I never looked back, I cursed in silence and in the breast there was something burning. when I read it in a news that a boat has been lost hen an image appears in my mind. As she stands and stares at the ocean staring until the light is gone. There is a girl staring at the ocean Paralyzed with eyes cloudy. .She stands all night staring at the ocean wide eyes, a bit swayback.
It's not a tattoo, just a drawing that has some personal meaning to her and if you have followed her you will have seen it evolve as she has through the year. It is a celebration of her Celtic heritage as well as the native people of her adoptive homeland New Zealand.
Ignore me just posting lyrics for myself: Ég kom í þorpið kvöld eitt um sumar Klukkan tólf í miðnætursól, ég fékk herbergi upp á verbúð, það virtist í lagi Með vask, borði og stól. Ég man stelpuna sem starði á hafið Stjörf með augun mött Hún stendur öll kvöld og starir á hafið Stóreyg, dáldið fött.
Really beautiful song. My native language is Spanish and although I don't understand the lyrics, it transmits something indescribable to me. I wish someday to visit Iceland, my favorite country in the world. Greetings from Ecuador 🇪🇨, South America ❤️
Thank you, jochum334. I guess i must have known something about this on some level, my desktop background is a pic of me facing the pacific in Long Beach,Ca. last summer. I miss the ocean.
its called "Stúlkan sem starði á hafið" which means "The girl that stared at the ocean" Its about a guy, the singer, (who's male, this is a tribute) coming to a small village to work and sees a girl who stares at the ocean.
Ég er ástfangin af þessu koveri. Ég vil að þetta sé spilað endalaust í jarðaförinni minni. Og í brúðkaupinu mínu. Og alltaf þegar ég á afmæli. Kannski er þetta dálítið skrítið en eitthvað í sálinni minni tengist svo mikið við hinsegin tónana í þessari útgáfu. Það bætir ennþá fleiri tilfinningum í lag sem er nú þegar svo yfirfullt af þeim og ég elska það svo, svo mikið.En nú skal ég þaga. Þ:

its about a man who falls in love with a woman who went mad with grief about her husband who died at sea, she stands all evenings staring at the sea and when the man realisis his live for her He goes away.
That summer was beautiful, I got enough work, the fishing and weather was good, and I stood and thought, and watched out the window, at the girl that they talked about. One night I awoke, with shivers and clearity of what crawed into my heart. what brightened first, was a curious heart, I found love here with the girl that stares at the sea, works her powerful eyes She stands all night, and stares at the sea Big innocent silence
That's true. I got an Icelander friend and she told me tha tshe doesn't likes reading Old Norse because she finds it weird and the sentences confusing. Bless frá Mexio!
Wow ! You sing really well ! Wonderful ! I love it ! You have a beautiful voice ! You could speak a beautiful languge ! That makes me jealous ! I really want to know what is this song talking about !
Can a icelandic person help me with this question, i seemed to hear a part in the when song " she stared over the fjord"? did i hear right. some words i can hear becuase its close to swedish
@taxi911 Faeroese is allmost like icelandic - alltho the closer to thorshavn you go the more danish there is spoken, Danish is similar but it's changing so fast, not the same danish there was even 200 years ago - its changing very fast. Icelandic has been kept similar since the start. I can kinda understand Faeroese but the closer they live to Thorshavn the more danish they speak, I'm Icelandic and they can understand me aswell.
Thats the girl that stares at the sea, works her powerful eyes She stands all night, and stares at the sea Big innocent silence These staring eyes, autumn green as the sea, watched on to the deep one night. They mirrored something that once was understood. Up on the cliffs she stood and stared into the fjord, sometimes creeped the woman inside. It's a type of wind, and wild eyes crindge, with hope that she'd dissapear within.
Icelandic is a beautiful language, as a Swede (and part Dane) I can make out a few words as Hera sings but I did look up the lyrics as well (in Icelandic) and could understand a lot more by just reading through it. Best regards from a mongrel ;-).
They next day I left with the next car south, I never looked back, I cursed under my breath. But in my chest was something that hurt Of the boat that was lost, and vision came to my thoughts why she stands, and stares to the sea. Stares to a brighter ?? Thats the girl that stares at the sea, works her powerful eyes She stands all night, and stares at the sea Big innocent silence
@lolcat23 I sooo do agree with you on that. I just wish my boyfriend could see it that way. He's danish and don't like the icelandic language or Iceland it self.. but still he's toghether with an icelandic girl, doesn't make any sence to me ;)
Here is the translation I arrived in the village, on a summer evening, Twellve-o-clock in the midnight sun. I got a deal on a room, that must be OK, with a sink, table and chairs. In the morning I walked, to the streets, an saw an old machine laying out on the ground, saw some houses for sale, some that were dying, and something in the window that glowed.
heeey veit eikkver hvað lagið heitir og hverng eg get fundið það það hljomar eikkvernvegin svona --- átti sér ljóð og leindarmál hún leindi því vel vð vissum ekkert þá, borðaði blóm og stríddi stelpunum en sagði ekki neitt nema stundum dararamm dararamm darararararamm --- hera singur það :D plz ekkver
@MedusasKimono Im from nz and have met her! its not a native maori design i think she just does it because it looks cool, which it definatly does!! and she seems to wear it everyday!! I think she spreads her time living between New zealand and iceland but not sure shes really cool person though and smiles upside down lol
people that is from Iceland can still read icelandic that is over 1000 yers old.. and we still younder stand most peopel from most people from sweden denmark feyrijar sweden denmark norwgen and same for them it is called Scandinavian
@taxi911 What about them? Danish has lost many words(computer!!) but other then that its pretty "clean", ofc the pronounciation is pretty fucked up, but that we knew :P. Faeroese i dont know a lot about, except that it seems to be 50/50 icelandic/danish, but like i said, thats just a guess cause i know almost nothing about faeroese.
I love it when people are insulting and negative, and then when they tick people off, they say, "I'm entitled to my opinion!" Guess what? So is EVERYONE ELSE, and their opinion is that you suck. That's how freedom of speech works. You have the freedom to be an ass, but everyone else has the freedom to tell you that you're an ass.
My guess he norwegian. :) Sidan normenn voru undir svium en eru nu eiginlega danar sem hafa "eidilagt" norskuna but oh well. (sorry eg er hrædileg i ad skrufa islendsku)
swedish is close to icelandic. not the other way around :) Icelandic = basicly the language spoken in norway at 1200(since then, the norwegians have ruined it) and that goes back to around 700, then swedes and norwegians spoke the same language. So icelandic is as pure a nordic language as you can get. Ergo : its Icelandic which is the model. and swedish the mongrel :P
Thats the girl that stares at the sea, works her powerful eyes She stands all night, and stares at the sea Big innocent silence I saw her dancing, with dark green eyes, danced as if I wasnt here She wanted to be, seemed to lock off the world, locked from you and me. who was she, I didnt know. and everyone I asked who was around, the reason was one black winters storm, the ocean took her man away

I heard it on the Polish radio last week, I'm so happy to find it here and listen to this beautiful song!
The girl who stares at the ocean.
I came to the village one night in the sommer
twelve o'clock in midnight-sun .
I got a room in a fiskcamp, it seemed okay
with sink, table and chair.
In the morning I went out on the street to see
The old machine ling on the ground .
I saw a house that had a history and some were dying

There is a girl staring at the ocean
Paralyzed with eyes cloudy.
.She stands all night staring at the ocean
wide eyes, a bit swayback.
I saw her dancing with sad green eyes
dance like she was not here.
She seemed to drift around, in her closed world
locked to me and you.
Who she was, I did not know but everyone I asked
who walked past.
Until I was told that one black winter

Paralyzed with eyes cloudy.
.She stands all night staring at the ocean
wide eyes, a bit swayback.

Ignore me just posting lyrics for myself:

This is absolutely amazing. I've never heard of her before. Icelandic is such a beautiful language. It's sad how us Swedes has "ruined" our language.

Ich versteh kein einziges Wort.
Aber es hört sich SUPER an.
Geht mir genauso :)

Up on a cliff she stood and stared over the bay
sometimes she kneeled among the Angelica,
There she gulped the wind and lost eyes in tears,
while her hopes disappeared again
This summer was beautiful, I took enough from work,
The fishing and weather was good.
But I stood thinking and staring out the window
at the woman who was believe to be mad
Eina nótt hrökk ég upp í skelfingu og skildi
hvað skreið um í hjarta mér.
Það sem virtist í fyrstu bara forvitni hjartans
hafði fundið ástina hér.
One night I jumped up in terror and understood
what crawled about in my heart.
That which seemed at first just a curious heart
had found true love here,
(Refrain)
Daginn eftir fór ég með fyrsta bílnum
sem flutti mig suður á leið.
Ég leit aldrei til baka, ég bölvaði í hljóði
og í brjóstinu var eitthvað sem sveið.
The day after I went with the first car
which carried me south on the road
I never went back, I cursed in silence
and smiling was something which burned
Er ég les það í blaði að bátur hafi farist
þá birtist mynd í huga mér.
Þar sem hún stendur og starir á hafið
starir þar til birtu þver.
I am reading it in the paper that a boat has gone
Then an picture came to mind,
Where she stood and stared at the sea
Staring till break of dawn
this song is so beautiful although i donot know what that song is about. i am from latvia and i love icelandic music.
its about a man who falls in love with a woman who went mad with grief about her husband who died at sea, she stands all evenings staring at the sea and when the man realisis his live for her He goes away.
love icelandic music.
That summer was beautiful, I got enough work,
the fishing and weather was good,
and I stood and thought, and watched out the window,
at the girl that they talked about.
One night I awoke, with shivers and clearity
of what crawed into my heart.
what brightened first, was a curious heart,
I found love here
with the girl that stares at the sea,
works her powerful eyes
She stands all night, and stares at the sea
Big innocent silence
love icelandic music.
WOW go hera!

It is Icelandic, I come from there and I love this song!
I think she does it better than Bubbi who did this song first.

Can a icelandic person help me with this question, i seemed to hear a part in the when song " she stared over the fjord"? did i hear right. some words i can hear becuase its close to swedish
De toute évidence
@gfxdsigner thank you! so much better when its synched
Ég fer allt af tár í auga þegar ég heyrir þetta lag
Ah, someone with a sense of humor
What happen to her ? Icelandic here , Warrior in the U.S Military.
Thats the girl that stares at the sea,
works her powerful eyes
She stands all night, and stares at the sea
Big innocent silence
These staring eyes, autumn green as the sea,
watched on to the deep one night.
They mirrored something that once was understood.
Up on the cliffs she stood and stared into the fjord,
sometimes creeped the woman inside.
It's a type of wind, and wild eyes crindge,
with hope that she'd dissapear within.
Icelandic is a beautiful language, as a Swede (and part Dane) I can make out a few words as Hera sings but I did look up the lyrics as well (in Icelandic) and could understand a lot more by just reading through it.
Best regards from a mongrel ;-).
This is so beautiful, it stirs my soul. Can anyone tell me where to find an english translation, or at least what the song is about please?
haha im related to her she was at my summerhouse last weekend after playing in london
They next day I left with the next car south,
I never looked back, I cursed under my breath.
But in my chest was something that hurt
Of the boat that was lost, and vision came to my thoughts
why she stands, and stares to the sea. Stares to a brighter ??
Thats the girl that stares at the sea,
works her powerful eyes
She stands all night, and stares at the sea
Big innocent silence
Besta lag í hemi
@lolcat23
I sooo do agree with you on that. I just wish my boyfriend could see it that way. He's danish and don't like the icelandic language or Iceland it self.. but still he's toghether with an icelandic girl, doesn't make any sence to me ;)
Hej, what you meant by hyvönninni would be correctly HVÖNN (in the lyrics hvönnini) a flower species (Angelica archangelica).
@lolcat23
what about Faeroese & Danish?
Super!
yeah you heard it right
Here is the translation
I arrived in the village, on a summer evening,
Twellve-o-clock in the midnight sun.
I got a deal on a room, that must be OK,
with a sink, table and chairs.
In the morning I walked, to the streets,
an saw an old machine laying out on the ground,
saw some houses for sale, some that were dying,
and something in the window that glowed.
❤heida Ros ❤
þis is kühl
Yup, a dying breed but as long as there is humour there is hope. :-)

@MedusasKimono Im from nz and have met her! its not a native maori design i think she just does it because it looks cool, which it definatly does!! and she seems to wear it everyday!! I think she spreads her time living between New zealand and iceland but not sure shes really cool person though and smiles upside down lol
Notes for this song??? I will look.
people that is from Iceland can still read icelandic that is over 1000 yers old..
and we still younder stand most peopel from most people from sweden denmark feyrijar sweden denmark norwgen and same for them it is called Scandinavian
@IcelandicGirl1273 I bet whole Island is... if you know what I mean :P
esto no tiene traducción al español? :(
english lyric?
@taxi911 What about them? Danish has lost many words(computer!!) but other then that its pretty "clean", ofc the pronounciation is pretty fucked up, but that we knew :P. Faeroese i dont know a lot about, except that it seems to be 50/50 icelandic/danish, but like i said, thats just a guess cause i know almost nothing about faeroese.
try out guitarparty and type the name
and it will icom ;P
@lolcat23 Swedish and icelandic is not the same...
Geðveikt lag
it's not a tattoo people!
Are you not Icelandic? There are many errors...
lol. you got that right.
afhverju eru meiri ensk fólk að commenta frekar enn íslendingar...?
rosa flott :D
ótrúlega fallegt lag.
það er fallegur ljoð
afsakaðu...eg er að læra islensku...
gangi þér vel :)
@TheSalamandra95 Dararamm
frabært
It's actually a tattoo... O.o
Please fix the timing!!!!!!!
My guess he norwegian. :) Sidan normenn voru undir svium en eru nu eiginlega danar sem hafa "eidilagt" norskuna but oh well. (sorry eg er hrædileg i ad skrufa islendsku)
swedish is close to icelandic. not the other way around :)
Icelandic = basicly the language spoken in norway at 1200(since then, the norwegians have ruined it) and that goes back to around 700, then swedes and norwegians spoke the same language.
So icelandic is as pure a nordic language as you can get.
Ergo : its Icelandic which is the model. and swedish the mongrel :P
Thats the girl that stares at the sea,
works her powerful eyes
She stands all night, and stares at the sea
Big innocent silence
I saw her dancing, with dark green eyes,
danced as if I wasnt here
She wanted to be, seemed to lock off the world,
locked from you and me.
who was she, I didnt know. and everyone I asked
who was around,
the reason was one black winters storm,
the ocean took her man away
