  • Hey! This homemade gel eyeliner is really pigmented, cheap and simple to make! It is also surprisingly long-lasting! The main ingredient activated charcoal has been used for many years for medicinal treatments, particularly in removing toxins and it has been deemed safe to use all over the body, so used with aloe vera and vitamin e oil this eyeliner recipe should be a lot safer than a lot of bought versions, as well as being free of suspicious chemicals and free of animal testing!
    So i hope you enjoy this DIY eyeliner tutorial, and try it out!

I like that you used pure & sensible ingredients for your recipe rather than other videos where people just throw together a bunch of pre-existing cosmetics & pretend like they've invented something new. Also like that you did your research as there are too many people on YT giving bad & dangerous advice.

    Hi Ela, another fun video! I love your tips and tricks and making my own experiments with them. So I tried this and different recipes with it, I found your version was the most black for eyeliner. The issue was that it was a bit "grainy" even with more liquid and when it was not long lasting on my eyes, it basically dissapeared after a couple hours. I thought I would share! Best!

    I love the recipe. Cost effective and mostly good ingredients. The Aloe Vera gell you linked has 3. Tetrasodium EDTA is a preservative that’s made from the known carcinogen, formaldehyde and sodium cyanide. (see how) It is also a penetration enhancer, meaning it breaks down the skin's protective barrier, going right into your bloodstream. Many companies trying to be "natural" will use Tetrasodium EDTA instead of parabens to preserve their products. In my opinion, Tetrasodium EDTA is just as bad. So I'll have to find a replacement for that ingredient. Thanks for making the video!

      @MollyMockingjay 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Nikkie Yoland there's actually something called "artificial tears" that you use when your eyes are dried out or irritated and it contains glycerin but there are two types of glycerin which can either be derived from animals or vegetables (I use vegetable glycerin because I'm vegetarian) but I'm not sure which one is used in the eye drops.

    About the activated charcoal for those who don't have much cash to spend on buying that stuff: get a small bag of almonds. You can roast one almond until it turns to powder. Indians use ghee, which is clarified butter, mixed with that roasted almond to make eyeliner. Experiment for the consistency you think is best. And that eyeliner will be black like the heart of Sauron. Will take days to completely wash off.

You can also get larger-sized containers from there, if you want to make your own foundation or face cream, and then they make glass bottles you can use for homemade cleaning supplies, if you're trying to get away from plastic and chemicals. Its all SUPER cheap, too.

    Ela maybe you know how to troubleshoot this? I so wanted to love this recipe…but it is not working out for me :-( Maybe in New Zealand they grind their activated charcoal to more smooth and powdery texture? My charcoal, although appearing powdery, I can still feel grittiness between my fingers when I rub it.I thought when I added the gel wetting it might smooth it out, but I can still feel grit. I even remade it grinding it in advance with a mortar and pestle for quite a while. I still feel it is gritty to use near the eye, what if some flaked into the eye - ouch! I even added some melted beeswax for smoothness after. Still feel it. Maybe you too feel that grittiness, but it doesn't flake. Or maybe yours is smooth as baby powder IDK! Any ideas how to to fix this?

    • @sevyrancesilver2772
      @sevyrancesilver2772 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the same issue, but I do just grind mine down with a mortar and pestle and it works fine, though honestly I grind it for about three hours. It will never be as smooth as you want it to be, but it can get pretty close. It's just one of those things you have to deal with when using charcoal as a cosmetic ingredient. There is a cute Indian girl who shows essentially how to make old fashioned 'lamp black' which she then uses to make her eyeliner. It's one of the first several videos that pop up when you search 'make your own natural eyeliner' on TH-cam. Her method is going to give you the smoothest natural charcoal black you can get, but it is a little more time and effort consuming.

      @@sevyrancesilver2772 Thank you so much for your reply, that was so sweet. My comment was so many years ago I forgot about it...I'm surprised I got no responses all this time. I was a lifelong vegetarian then, but I would not use beeswax now as I am Vegan. I have used powdered Kohl / Kajal as I grew up, because my Dad's wife was Morrocan and she gave me my first batch! I wanted a different method, because some kohl you purchase can contain lead. I do know how to make it from the lamp but when my kids were younger I was afraid to leave it burning so long! Thank you for your comment I think years later I can now revisit the lamp method!

    Hi there Ela🌷 I have a question for you.. I have followed your recipe to the exact science, yet the activated charcoal stays a bit separated after mixing well. When I mean well, I mean mixing for s good half hour. When applying it’s gritty, and dries up with charcoal falling into my eyes and burning me like crazy. Any suggestions as to why my formula isn’t mixing correctly?

      Adelita DeLune Charcoal is pretty coarse and likes to clump up when wet, so I think that you could try blending the charcoal in a coffee grounder or a spice grounder to try to make it more finely milled.
      You could also try iron oxide pigment because those powders are much more finely milled and are much less likely to clump together when wet

    I followed the direction with the right ingredients, but the liner was so liquid y so I added another one of the charcoal and still wasn't dark enough so I have added another one which makes 3 charcoals now and I kept putting on one coat to another until it finally got black. I had to apply on it several times until it finally looked like eyeliner.
