I Tried My Grandmother's Homemade Kajal Recipe

- My grandmother makes her own Kajal. It's something she learned from her grandmother. Since it's a traditional family recipe, I decided to learn it from her during this lockdown.
Bindi Stamp/Bindi mould - amzn.to/3fTV6CL
Here's the list of ingredients you'll need for this:
1. Ponnankanni Keerai / Ponnaganti Koora / Gudari Saag/ Dwarf Copperleaf spinach
2. Castor oil
3. Bricks
4. Edible Camphor
5. Ghee
Preparation:
1. Blend the leaves. We use Ponnankanni because it's really good for your eye. Try not to use water while blending as it dilutes the extract. Just shake the jar a few times and blend repeatedly. Squeeze the juice out of it with your hand.
2. Set the bricks in such a way that you're able to place Castor oil lamps between them. We use bricks instead of a regular stove because we want to create a slow-burning stove that lets the soot from the Castor oil mix with the Ponnankanni extract.
3. Smear the extract from the leaves onto a brass plate, and place the plate upside down facing the flame from the lamps. Ash sticks to quality metal. So Copper and Brass are good options.
4. Leave it in a corner for 6-8 hours. The plate is going to get hot. Make sure it's out of reach so you don't hurt yourself by accident. Keep the lamps lit the whole time.
5. After 6-8 hours, turn the plate around and collect the ash in a cup. Mix a pinch of Camphor and some Ghee. Camphor acts as a disinfectant and also cools your eye. Ghee gives us the consistency we need for Kajal, and holds it together better than oil.
6. Put the Kajal you made into a tiny box. Remember those pretty little boxes they'd gift during weddings and religious holidays?
7. You can use this Kajal with a Pottu achchu or Bindi mould too. It looks great.
I stick to store-bought eyeliner because it's more practical for everyday use. It doesn't smudge like Kajal. But this was a family recipe passed down through generations. I felt like I should learn how to make it and share it with you :)
The whole process seemed very beautiful and intricate...somehow knowing that this came from your grandma, makes it even more personal and special...thanks for sharing this with us...👍
Glad you liked it ♥️

Can we use dried powder of the leaves. I don't get fresh ones here in my place.
Interesting question. I have to ask my grandma. I am not sure about it.
Would also love to know what can be used as a substitute. And could I use a drop of camphor essential oil? I.cannot get edible camphor, just the one to use for an aarti.
🙏
If we don't find these leaves can we use any other leaves instead ?
What's the purpose of the leaves extract?
Really nice, but I can understand the plant used for leaves
yess
Thanks it’s a traditional recipe
In my family so I just followed the recipe 😊
@@iamhamsiit would also be good to know why you need each ingredient, that would continue your tradition and the wisdom both; to know the benefits of each, then you would also know what is essential and what can be substituted.
Honagone soppu in kannada

@@iamhamsi Its a childhood memory. My elder sister used to make kajal at home. I had used the same until my marriage. But now, after marriage, its not possible to make home-made kajal. So I use Lakme Iconic and Colorbar kajal.

Haha I love miniature things ❤️❤️
Mam I don’t have copper plate can I use diya to collect ash ?
You can use banana leaves too
Oh banana leaf also? I am learning so much from this comments section ❤️
@@iamhamsi yes, our ancestors in Assam, used to rub mustard oil on the waxy side of banana leaf and hold it above the flame of an earthen diya. It's a simpler method and works well for lesser amount of kajal.
Will this Kajal be beneficial for cataract?
no it's just used for Cosmetic purposes
Great one
Thank you ♥️
can we add this in bald spots?
No 😊
Wow
Thanks 🙏🏾 ❤️
