c5 through c7. I really try to avoid lifting heavy things these days, but I work out and I work around the house. I try not tp push myself though. Dont be scared. If the doctor says you need to do it then just try to be smart and do your homework. Watch lots of youtube videos about it!!!!

Hey Greg! Thanks for sharing. I am 5 weeks post-op and while my pain/numbness is mostly gone I still have some lingering weakness particularly in my grip, wrist, bicep and shoulder. How is your strength now?

Hi Jordon, it is pretty good. I haven't really tested it. I don't know what caused the herniation to happen in the first place, but I typically didn't act my age when it came to lifting things and physical work, i.e., firewood, large appliances, etc. My resolution after this whole thing was to be much more careful with that kind of physical exertion going forward. Also, I have to say that my grip, and arm strength wasn't really noticeably bad before the surgery. I think that I am probably about the same as before surgery right now. When I play disc golf now, I can throw as far as I did before. One thing that the surgeon said to me was that some of the symptoms, like numbness, would get better over time. I would say that so far that has been true for me.

I am doing really well. I have had some tingling in my arm, but due to a little arthritis. I just started doing PT for that. But otherwise, I am doing very well.
Two months is not that far along. Take care of yourself and do lots and lots of walking and drink lots of water and take good holistic care of yourself.

Hi Greg! Did you have a lot of phlegm in your throat after the surgery? My husband had his surgery yesterday and is having major issues with phlegm even though he's only eaten scrambled eggs and water and taken his pills!

Hi Bren, the first few days are very difficult. I remember drinking a lot of ice water and clear protein drinks. Maybe the eggs are causing phlegm? Some people have very mild egg allergies. Maybe that. Maybe try something else. Maybe chicken or tuna salad? He definitely should try to eat extra protein as that should help healing. I hope this helps.

@@GregBikofsky Very helpful, Greg! Thank you! How are you doing now?

@@BrensBoutique Very well. I am about 2 1/2 years post op. I have over-did it a few times. Especially when it comes to lifting heavy things off the ground. I am more careful about over-doing it now. Better safe than sorry. Remind and re-remind your husband about that. The herniated disc in the neck can potentially be life threatening. Heal and stay healed is job #1.

@@GregBikofsky For sure! My husband is a powerlifter so this is going to be really hard on him and I'm soooo worried he's going to do too much, too soon!😩

@@BrensBoutique Yikes. I hear that professional wrestlers get this sort of thing a lot. They do a lot of lifting. I had my first symptoms after bringing a stove up a flight of stair. Now, I try very hard not to lift heavy things. I work out. I play disc golf every weekend. I play basketball with my kids, but I really really try to hold off on the lifting. For your hubby, he is going to have to discuss with his doctor, but I would really try not to push the envelope when it comes to your spinal cord.
