As someone who has been doing this for the past 4 years, this is absolutely the definitive guide to navigating TIFF. Thank you for creating this resource.
The video I needed. I've been the last few years but really want to make the most out of TIFF this year. I have two pages of movies I want to see so I'm glad I have an expert to give me all the tips and tricks!
Love how comprehensive this TIFF primer video is... although, I will admit, the haphazard cuts with different outfits/wardrobes had me doing double-takes more often than not. Otherwise, great work... I have no doubt it'll help fledgling TIFF goers get a leg up on their festival experience 3 weeks from now.
Dude, THANK YOU for making this! I'm attending for the first time this year and couldn't be more stoked, but this is the best Tiff explained video I've seen by a mile and you just made me so much more confident in being able to catch as much stuff as I can 👌 Just subscribed, keep up the great work!
love this video - I especially appreciated your breakdown of the different categories of showings, it made me intrigued to try watching a Wavelengths film just to see
To recommend a few - -Grand Tour was a fascinating film that uses cinematic language to decolonialize the form. I didn't love the movie at Cannes, but I haven't been able to stop thinking about it for months. Excited to rewatch it. -Heard great things about The Damned, although this feels like a little bit less of an experimental film than I typically expect from the lineup. -Youth (Hard Times) and Youth (Homecoming) should both be excellent, but I'd recommend watching the first film in the series first, Youth (Spring), to see if you're into it. -I hated Pepe, but if you want the MOST wavelengths film, that's the one. Experimental to the max.
@@fantasyfilmball wow I didn't see this reply, thank you for these recs! I was already interested in Grand Tour, and besides that the ones I was most interested in were Viet and Nam, and Perfumed with Mint, but I will look into these as well :>
thank you soooo much for this video, I'm a Torontonian who has been going to the festival for a couple years now but mostly for the street vibe and celebs, I really want to heighten my experience and go to some good movies and engage more with the environment and yeah this video is a work of art🙏
Rushing everything seems stressful but best of luck! Also appreciate the Q&A note you made, I had some ppl last year telling directors that they should've done things differently about their own films and it was so cringe. Excited for this year, the lineup is very exciting!
For some, it would be stressful. For me, it's the way to go. Last year I bought no tickets and only got turned away from Perfect Days, Quiz Lady, and Daddio (as well as the Press & Industry Anatomy of a Fall, which they inexplicably put in the smallest theatre at Scotiabank) In previous years I've had a friend with a Patron's Circle membership help me buy tickets in advance for the big titles, but he doesn't have the membership this year unfortunately. So back to the rush line I go!
Thank you for the video, it's very comprehensive and super helpful! I'm excited to be going to TIFF for the first time this year! I have one question. On the TIFF site schedule, time blocks for a film are always a half hour longer than the runtime of the movie. Is this because of a guaranteed Q&A, or just to help people schedule with 30 minutes in between screenings?
Transit-wise, don’t discount the Toronto Bike Share. I used it last year to commute from my stay to the venues and was easily the quickest and cheapest option I could’ve gone with!
This video is so helpful. This year is my first time going to tiff and i had tons of questions. Definitely gonna try the rush line. My question is: is there a rush line pass? i tried to buy one but could'nt find it anywhere
There is! When I made the video yesterday, they hadn't announced it yet, but this morning they put one out (and actually, it's better than last year! Last year was only for Under 25, this year Rush Pass is for everyone). $80 means you can rush anything you want for free! www.reddit.com/r/TIFF/comments/1etma2l/80_rush_pass_for_membersgeneral_public_over_the/ It's not on sale yet, but should be by the end of August.
Unfortunately I do not! My only advice would be to contact the film's producers, or to contact the Canadian distributor of the film (Elevation Pictures). Best of luck at the festival!!! - M
We went to TIFF today and tried to Rush Line a movie. But didn't realize we had to pay. But some others didnt. Am I missing something? Is there a membership I'm supposed to buy?
There is a rush pass you can purchase that will make rush lines free: am.ticketmaster.com/tiff2/shopping-cart?pubres=true&eventname=4SO25RSH Otherwise, press & industry passholders also get in for free. For the most part, everyone will be paying the $27 or $47 (premium) ticket for the rush line (which is far cheaper than the regular ticket prices)
Talking with people! Often also catching up on work that I've fallen behind on while in other movies. Not every rush line takes 4 hours. Many of them are much faster. You just have to decide how much time you're willing to give for each film.
Oh god... mistakes were made lol. They gave out FREE BURGERS to everyone in attendance at The Menu premiere, but you and I were watching The Son at the worst theater imaginable and didn't even get a Q&A.
This is SO HELPFUL!! First year to afford TIFF, cinephile for many years, understanding the festival is like a minefield 😢

Awesome Matt . So helpful! Thanks so much!
Thanks so much for posting! We are going for the first time and this is very helpful!
Fantastic video! Very helpful
Thank you. I've never been to TIFF before and this was overwhelming me.
Is the price showing at 32:02 the normal price for tickets?
Great video btw
Thank you, awesome video! Very helpful!
Do you know if there is a way to get in at Press and Industry screenings?
If you have a volunteer voucher you can use those to rush P&I. Otherwise the only way to get into P&I screenings is to have a P&I pass.
Thank you! 👍
This is so incredibly helpful!

It's some buffer room to account for the potential of a Q&A, as well as the movie possibly starting late (which often happens).

Hi Everyone, our film VILLAGE KEEPER will debut at TIFF in the Discoveries program! Please check it out!
I'm looking forward to this one! Sounds very interesting. Best of luck at the festival!

Not every rush line takes 4 hours. Many of them are much faster. You just have to decide how much time you're willing to give for each film.
Please di watch sunshine from philippines
...Not the mention of The Son. I gave up tickets to the premier of The Menu for The Son at RTH and I will never forgive myself.

Am I the only person who clicked on this video, expecting an explanation about the image file format?
how to make the most out of TIFF? go back in time, it's not worth it anymore
You can easily be negative about everything. It all depends on your personal attitude.
