Thank you for this great post of my Dad! I love it! I have read many of the comments and I am grateful to all who remember him. Thank you all for the love. Blessings always! Mikey Gavilan
He used a Kukari Machete as a Sickle,to chop all the tall thick weeds and brush around his home. He enjoyed using that thing for hours on end everyday. That's why his punches mimic that type of movement. A Very Uniquely devised/developed punching movement style. Uniquely Fun to watch his bouts.
Kid Gavilan was an amazing fighter. Brought style and technique when a lot of these guys had none. His famous "bolo punch" till this day is imitated by many, well done by a few. But never like the original. He didnt have a lot of power but man o man could he dance around the best of them.
I agree with the style, but technique was abundant in the golden age of boxing guys like SRR, Basilio, Lausse and Bratton and saxton prove that statement otherwise
That’s probably one of the best observations I’ve come across in any of the boxing comments, he is exactly like Robinson in terms of his combinations and hand speed and certainly like Dempsey In his brilliant swarming attacks, great comment.
The old timers say that the only difference between Sugar Ray Robinson and Kid Gavilan was that Sugar Ray had one-punch knockout power, in either hand.
It’s a shame it’s taken so long for him to get his just due,White boxing shoes for some of his fights, bolo,he even did a shuffle with his feet!! Way ahead of his time!!
I said Favourite Figters not the best. He was one of the pound for pound greatest ever i just would have him in the top ten of that list its too stacked but yes one the greatet weltherweighs no doubht. He was champion in the golden age. One belt, no super this and super that bullshit and beat great names so ya he is one the pound for pound greatest ever..
It was through a channel that is named Reznick that I discovered who Kid Gavilan is. Man, am I shocked I haven‘t heard of him before. So underrated Besides that, great tribute and great video
I tried about 2 weeks ago mate, not enough footage out there of him in good quality unfortunately. Good fighter though, very tough! I love his fight with Freitas.
ray leonard is the closest thing to him. hard to say who was better in their prime.... ive always felt ray had best shot prime for prime vs robinson b/c it was gavilan who came closest to beating prime robinson.
Which boxers in general are copyright protected? I'm curious as to who exactly calls you out on violations when you've managed to cover such a wide range of boxers.
***** Well so far it's been Canelo, Sergio Martinez and Deontay Wilder. There's probably been a few more but I've made so many videos that I've forgot.
Robinson and gavilan would beat the current welterweights, no question about it. I don't know what you mean with "if he still fought in this era". Most of the boxers in that era were better than now.
@@ReesZzz Literally hasn't. Maybe if we go to 1920 and backwards. But in the 40s, 50s, 60s etc. They would beat the hell out modern guys. They fought more, trained more and had better teachers. Tell me how boxing has evolved or have you even watched any of the old school greats.
Hi Hanza! I was wondering if you would be okay with having your video posted Reddit Boxing automatically? Especially since your content isn't political in nature. I think it would be great to have you're content shared on another platform, a majority of the posters their are respectful and knowledgeable of the sweet science itself. I would have to get the okay with the moderators, but of course firstly, your permission?
Yea that would be great mate! As long as my name is mentioned in terms of credit then go for it, I really appreciate anyone who shares my content. Feel free to post any of my videos in this playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLfbjKz220EvuZNqLdNRYSBhSkDRi1Q9jW.html - If you could link me when they get uploaded then that would be awesome.
@@surveying482 your comment is amusing. The Kid went toe to toe with Robinson twice. At his best the Kid was the second best WW ever. I take into consideration the depth of talent in the division and the skill of that depth. Gil Turner chases Floyd out of the ring. So does Basilio and Hearns. The list goes on. I have nothing against Floyd. Granted he’s a self promoter and all time blowhard who had good skills in a weak generation.
@@surveying482 and let’s remember the fighters, in the era when boxing was an important sport, at WW and MW wore 6 ounce gloves and fought 15 round championship fights and the weigh in was the morning of the fight. Bigger gloves ,12 round championship and the day before the fight weigh in has completely altered the sport.
Thank you for this great post of my Dad! I love it!

Your dad was a great great champion ! Orgullo del boxeo cubano y latinoamericano .R.I.P Kid Gavilán
He only had one son and his name is Gerardo Jr, its amazing how many people lie in these comment sections

At first I thought it was SRR, such a similar style . Amazing.

May I ask which fighters you are referring to who are using the bolo punch these days?
Jermall charlo got a knockout with a bolo punch.
Ray leonard also used to do it.
And larry holmes threw some against marvis frazier.
Ceferino garcia was doing the bolo punch long before gavilan’s career. Both great fighters
@@Cashyoso true.

Tough as nails and great defense. Never got finished and fought everyone.
One of my favorite fighters of all times. And one of the greatest crowders I've ever seen.
His style is like a cross between Robinson and Dempsey
That’s probably one of the best observations I’ve come across in any of the boxing comments, he is exactly like Robinson in terms of his combinations and hand speed and certainly like Dempsey In his brilliant swarming attacks, great comment.
One of the best Latin fighters who ever lived. Great work.
? That was an African/black man who was born in a Latin country
Can't help myself, but it seems like I'm watching Robinson. Very similar
Such a shame there's no fight film of Robinson vs Gavilan in existence. It would have been beautiful to watch.
+haNZAgod There's a documentary about their fight on youtube but I forgot what it's called.
Oh yeah, I wonder how those fights weren't recorded. I guess Robinson looked very sharp back in the day
It would be like Picasso vs Rembrandt

ALWAYS GOOD , TO SEE THE OLD LEGENDS LIKE KID.
Awesome welterweight. That left was so pinpoint and natural.
The master of the bolo punch ...nuff said .
In one of the Baddest era in boxing 143 fight's never lost by a knockout Amazing only Carmem Basilio put him down and he got right up
