I live in Easthampton . In fact watching your video on my t.v. screen ... I can look to the right and see MT.Tom out my window . Some people say Dr. Seuss (a Springfield native) drew inspiration from Mt. Tom and Easthampton for The Grinch . Specifically the way he sat up on that mountain looking down over the little town of Who-ville .
I was just up there a couple weeks ago. I love hiking the Metacomet trail. I usually start at the opposite end of the range though, by Reservation Road.
Jay, I have hiked in the Mount Tom Reservation on three occasions. Summiting Mount Tom from both directions and. Covering the North end from Route 5. I have videos of all three hikes in my New England Trail Playlists.
@jayducharme is just checked out your channel and started watching your Mountain Park Video. I have a copy of your book. I used to go there once a year on carload Wednesday’s.
While hiking in New England quite a few years ago I hiked up to a mountain top with a large communications towers setup. Well on the way back I was approached by some armed security guards who wanted to know what I was doing up near the communication compound, apparently some of those antennas were government security antennas. They knew I was there as soon as I was about 100 yards from it. They must have had sensors somewhere along the trail going up. They walked me back to the main trail and watched me wonder off. Makes you wonder who’s watching who.
Was this near Amherst by any chance? There was some military installation, perhaps Air Force, maybe somehow associated with Chicopee's Westover AFB, that had an access road from somewhere in "the Notch."
@@richway7977 No it was West Peak in Meriden, Ct This happened around 1974. That area you are talking about was a underground communications bunker and the entrance was on the north side of the mountain. I think they gave it to Amherst College or University of Mass.
Todd the marking is pretty good, except there was a reroute. If you look at my All trails link in the description, you'll see I went up the old route, which had a road walk and went back the new route close to the reservoir. Thanks for watching.
Holy-smoke, this is a wonderful video. 😊
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you! 😊

Interesting though regarding Dr. Seuss. I read all those book many time when I was young. Thanks for sharing.
We love to hike here. The view is well worth it.
Nicholas, I agree, the views from the Mt. Tom Reservation are spectacular. Thanks for watching!
It's been decades since I've done this hike. Now I live far away from Mass. Thanks for this.
My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it.

@@OutdoorsWithJohnUSA Great memories!
I should take a trip out this summer to hike this.
This is a great place to explore, you won’t be disappointed.
@@OutdoorsWithJohnUSA I haven’t hiked in years and I want to see some of the towers up there.
I recommend the paved road that follows the old incline
isnt that the road on 141 before the drop?@@OutdoorsWithJohnUSA
@@FN32DXer its the service road that goes to the summit and is only used by the telcom workers

Interesting, I have had a similar response when near a paper mill in Maine once. The towers at Mt. Tom are commercial and I’ve never had an issue.

@@richway7977 There was a tower on Mount Lincoln located on Pelham, MA, the next town over from Amherst. It was being used for communications.
How is it marked for the NET/MM at the summit going over the range for the full section 6 ending on Rt. 5?
