What you used zip ties to do hold the fence to post. We use to use bailing wire. We saved all our bailing wire that came off the hay and straw bales. we found 100s of uses for it. If grandpa needed a hook to hang something small up in the barn he'd cut a piece baling wire and make a hook out of it. I remember wiring up the exhaust pipe and muffler back up under the truck when it fell down using baling wire... LOL... We always kept some in the trucks, cars, and tractors. You never new when you would need a piece of it... LOL...
We thought that life was over when the guy we got hay from started using baling twine. Grandpa was unhappy at the start. So he talked to the hay farmer and he bartered something for all the unused baling wire he had left over and the grandpa had us save all the baling twine and we found all kinds of uses for it. We even used it to lace up our boots when we had a boot tie brake and didn't have any more on hand... LOL...
I learned how to save things that others would just throw away. You save it for at least one year then if you didn't find a use for whatever it was then two months later you'd throw it out.
Then once a year we'd clear out the junk barn and haul all the junk to the dump. We seemed to do it every September just before school started... BUT YOU NEVER threw out baling wire or twine... LOL..

Sheep are so pretty and sound more pleasant than goats IMO. I bet Rebecca will tame them fairly quickly.

Get you a bucket and an hand full of grain. Then just go sit on the bucket in the middle of the pasture. When they get close, out the grain. A few days of that and you will have 3 new best friends.

We had sheep for awhile on our farm when I was growing up. They are dumb that's for sure. Our biggest issue became finding someone to shear them and then the price we could get for the wool became so low it wasn't worth keeping them. Nice looking flock. I hope they work out for you.

If you band the boys at about two months old and butcher before they are a year old, otherwise they start getting a mutton taste to them. We butcher ours between ten and eleven months old for the best weight and really good flavor. It helps fill the freezers.

We have had a herd of nine Nigerian dwarf goats for years and I’ve always had to mow their pasture every now and then. Now we have seven sheep that are maybe 6 months old, in with our goats and I have to move them almost daily. It’s crazy how much grass the sheep eat and they don’t really eat the hay at all. We graze them all winter.
To me it looks like that area you have there would last our sheep maybe a week before they grazed it down about as much as we would want. I would definitely get them trained to a single Hotwire and start rotating them around the farm. Once they are trained to a single hot wire it’s a game changer for moving them.

I very much agree with some other comments about getting a livestock guardian dog. As your flock grows you may even need two. There are several different breeds to consider and you'll hear pros and cons. Watch videos and talk to others who have them, if you decide to go that way, so you get the best one to fit your needs.
Wishing you every success with this new venture!! 🥰

If you’re going to keep both sheep and goats long term, look into the logistics of keeping them together. Goats with horns can hurt sheep even just trying to play. But more important is that goats need a copper supplement, but it’s fatal to sheep. You’ll have to feed sheep safe minerals, but give the goats copper in a bolus if they will be together.

What a pretty picture that is....lush green grass, beautiful sheep with their babies. I think the babies are born with springs on their feet. LOL. I hope when they get settled in they will be friendly enough where you can pet them. I have seen homesteaders who put two cattle panels on each side of -metal posts to form a square and then they are mounted on heavy duty wheels. This makes a rolling cage and they are moved around the pasture each day. Thus giving the grass time to regenerate by the time they get around to the first spot. they also put a large triangle of cloth across the corner so they have a shady spot as well and they have water pails and minerals that hang on the fence. So happy you were able to get the sheep this year and from a farm close by as well. Looking forward to seeing the pigs and steers as well. You have such a beautiful property for your animals to live on. Thanks for sharing, have a Blessed day.

I grew up helping my Grandfather raise Katahdin sheep on his farm. He had about 100 ewes and we would round them up a few times a year to give them shots and wean them at Labor Day. A lot of people who’ve mostly had cows seem to hate sheep, but I personally think they are much better suited to a smaller farm. We live in northern PA where there are a lot of predators, and the combination of a hot fence and a livestock guard dog kept the predators away. I hope your sheep adventure goes well!

My neighbor has a Great Pyrenees and he just leaves the dog out in the pasture with the sheep dog is very content just watching the sheep all day and night. I live in north western Wisconsin and there is plenty of Coyotes Wolves and Bear around here and neighbor reports he has never lost a sheep to a predator he also says a donkey works good but they make a ton of noise lol.

    Morning guys
    Your sheep look very healthy
The adult females are called Ewes, the adult males that are not going to be rams and are castrated are called Whethers, and of course the adult males are Rams
The young baby sheep are lambs and you need to watch out for predators early in their life, we have problems with crows and eagles pecking their eyes.
And foxes killing the young lambs
The wool is a fire retardant and when spun makes beautiful warm clothes.
On my brother's property he has about 25 thousand sheep and usually has a high lambing rate so can have as many as 20 to 25 thousand lambs a year
That's lots of wool during shearing time.
Takes 10 to 12 Shearer's about 3 weeks to shear them.
Shearing is cutting off the wool from the sheep's back.

Oh my... that brings me back... sheep are like lemmings... they'll follow one another through a hole in the fence. You'll regret using electric fence wire to corral the sheep... the best thing that'll do is thwart the coyotes (though it didn't deter the ones that decimated the flock I used to work with)... better to just swing em between your pastures. You're going to love how they manicure your pastures down to a golf course look. Good Luck!! Can't wait to see y'all at shearing season. (Should get a donkey to act as a guartdian)

We had to get 2 LGDs to protect our goats from the coyotes here in FL. The coyotes easily jumped a 7ft fence w hot wire on the top. Now that we have Great Pyrenees we havent had anymore issues.

  • @This1LifeWeLive
    @This1LifeWeLive ปีที่แล้ว +7

They are beautiful out there! I wouldn't honestly mind dome sheep! You might consider adding a mini donkey for defense as bobcats and coyotes are diurnal, so they are up day and night equally. My neighbor does about 75 sheep, but made the mistake of mixing hair sheep with non hair sheep, resulting in an awful mix of odd wool that never fully sheds...nor does he shear them... don't do what he does 😂

Full grown female sheep are Ewe's and Lambs are sheep that are 1 year of age and younger! Hopefully you have enough pasture to rotate thesheep and the Steer(if your are getting them this year( I think I remember saying you were?)) But the pasture re looking great and the live stock will love them! It will take about 4 - 6 days for the sheep to settle, but after that they get pretty friendly(usually)!! Sheep will graze an Area to stubble. You should keep a very close watch on that pasture(so you know when to rotate them) Good luck!

Sheep don’t do well on just gazing in the spring grass after a winter of hay feeding, for me, their stomachs couldn’t handle the fresh green grass after a winter of hay feeding. I lost two sheep and nursed the third one back to health. Again congratulations sheep are a great animal, rams can be difficult at times but still fun.
