    Hey James, I just wanna say, you're awesome and because of you, I was determined to make my school project in electronics class 3D printed with the brand new 3D printer we got, and I'm now the first person in my high school to ever 3D print my box

    You could use the sensors in the body and head to detect if it runs into something and automatically play an "annoyed" sound.

    James...thank you again. Coming from someone who simply isn't smart enough to create something like this it is an honor to watch you work. Once again you have outdone yourself. I can't wait for the rest of Ultron and you're new project. A 10 foot At-At would be great :) No matter what thank you and appreciate what you do.

    I suggest for weathering, wipe it off while its still wet with a rag, instead of waiting for it to dry and sand it off.

  • @JSPartre
    @JSPartre 8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    I would definitely leave the dents and scratches on, that's the best weathering you could think of ! Also maybe try a bit more liquid for the dark paint, it would go in the rifts and cracks better and get wiped off more easily. (Also, amazing job. The head looks awesome !)

    I'm really excited to see what you'll do next James. BB-8 has been great (Vs 1, 2, & 3), HulkBuster is on its way there, and Ultron couldn't be cooler. I think you'd probably do yourself good in making the next project a robot, it's what you're best at and after all it's called xrobots for a reason.

    I think using a wash would work better. it's. basically very thinned paint that seeps into cracks and you can wipe away the excess before it can set up.Have you thought about applying a couple gloss coats to seal and protect the paint after you are finished?

    Adding a little more liquid to your paint will allow you to rub it in and off (wax on, wax off) and give it a little more realistic look. It's also a much quicker process.

    I wonder if JJ Abrams appreciates how impractical BB8's gross design hampers its mobility over various terrains. BB8 itself is adorable but seemingly suffers serious feasibility issues for real world performance - no matter how advanced the technology. But AWESOME build nonetheless! It certainly rivals the model rolled out for movie enthusiasts on the red carpet! Were I wealthy, I'd be calling you asking, Messr. Bruton, please make me my own BB8 😉

    Thank you for doing this! It really helps dispel the voodoo magic that usually surrounds the general public perception of this stuff, hell its made me want to get in and build one myself, although I have nowhere near enough experience and am basically so slow that these videos would have to be step by step hours long explanations for some duffer like me to get it lol. Though having the CAD and source code available for it is definitely a plus!
    Thanks again and keep being awesome!

    weathering is best done using oil paint, which stay wet for much longer and is easy to wipe and push in crevices and joints. it also stays glossy, unless you coat it matte when dry, mimicking oil and grease. Cassel earth is particularly indicated for dark tones.

    @James Bruton - Beautiful work! I would highly recommend spending the money and upgrading your speaker. The sounds are much of the charm of BB-8 and the speaker you are using sounds blown out. It does not even sounds like BB-8 when you tested it on the bench. Look at used BOSE PC speakers. You can pick them up for cheap and they are amazing. With the noise of conventions and the blasting sounds of all the other R2s no one will hear that... even with an open door.

    Doing the weathering always looks so strange...
    ... just brushing paint at some places
    Only in the end when you're almost finished the weathering suddenly works and reveals a really awesome droid!
    How about using thinned paint on a towel and rubbing the complete droid with it and then clean off the large areas?
    As if it has run through dirt and someone tried to clean it again?
    Looking forward to the bonus episode and the other projects!

  • @sbushido5547

    Have you considered using some sort of spray sealer to keep the paint from getting chipped off so much? There's bound to be something available that can help it from wearing down too terribly fast.

    Hi James,
    Thanks for this upload, it looks a lot different now.
    On the weathering,. to make it seem more dirty in the seams AND on the flat areas, they should be linked, with marks going across not only in the cracks.

  • @harrisongrant1066
    @harrisongrant1066 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    James, you should use a clear coat on the ball to prevent it from scuffing the paint any more

  • @suicidalbanananana
    @suicidalbanananana 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice build yet again! one small piece of advice, but it should be noted i dont build these kind of things so decide on your own if u wanna take this advice: [1] there should prolly be some weathering on the middle of the panels, yes dirt would collect around the seams, but also on the surface as a whole so its a bit strange how it seems like all panels have had a quick clean, but only in the middle [2] maybe you could go over some of the bigger dents/damages in the ball with a tiny bit of chrome paint, to give the idea of a metal ball with paint chipping off here and there. Either way, yet another awesome BB8 man, love your channel and cant wait to see your ultron progress a bit further.
    Oh and one last thought; if u ever go and make another BB8, your gonna need some fancy magnets for this, but concider a floating head, you can see that the head is sorta jumpy now, and i dare bet its because of the head 'driving on' the damage of the ball, if it would levitate above it slightly it would prolly be alot smoother (but yea, again, this will take some serious magnets and thinking out how the magnet fields should form for the best 'levetating coupling'

  • @JasmineSurrealVideos
    @JasmineSurrealVideos 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    BB8 in SW looks weathered anyway with being in the desert, so dirtying him up is more authentic. I'm an artist, and would advise not to use cheaper acrylic in those large tubes, but a decent lightfast brand like Winsor and Newton, which has better staying power. I'd advise using a spray acrylic varnish with a matt finish to further protect the paint work.
    It's a wonderful project, I love BB8, and robots generally, and the work you've put into him is tremendous, the electronics and build is fantastic. I think the paint job, as a professional artist, is great, it's not too ultra perfect, as he should be a little roughed up.

  • @i.am.adrian
    @i.am.adrian 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great videos as always...you really should try the airbrush when weathering BB. You used an airbrush on Hulkbuster, why not try it on BB8? If you mixed up a rust, mud, or sand colored acryllic, you could get that more subtle weathering effect all over. You can also let the airbrush spatter a little to give you some variation in the pattern, and then move in close to get the contour lines between the panels.
    Love this little droid!

  • @jesuizanmich
    @jesuizanmich 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Have you tried pin washing as with model planes and tanks to make highlights?
    The idea is that heavily diluted black paint will just flow into the seams, and the excess can be easily wiped off, leaving the outside clean and the seams highlighted.

    Have you tried to use a kitchen sponge with a little bit of paint and then hit the droid lightly with it for the weathering effect? It may work better than applying paint with a brush then smudging with a towel.
    (never did this in my life, but it seems like it would achieve the desired effect.)
    Seeing one on top of you work table makes me think you did try, but I can't really tell.
