      +tomtronic Yep this right here, thumbs up. This channel is called x robots first of all, you are only giving us exactly what it says on the tin, complainers GTFO. Secondly it is your channel and to remain motivated, consistently putting out episodes around your real life on projects that run for 48 parts +, you must have to pick engineering challenges and projects that speak to you first and foremost, James. Anyone can see that the specifics of BB8 is what is bringing you back to revise and refine the design. Not only that it is topical still with the release of the film and has a shelf life of its own with many others rushing to complete their own design right now. This does feel like one of the leaders in the field of BB8 builds. Would that be the case if you left the project for a period of time as some people are saying?

    Who is complaining about this series? As best I can tell this is classic XRobots fare. Who cares if its a 3rd generation design. You still have interesting new problems to solve, and while I can't speak for everyone, 95% of the enjoyment I get from your videos is watching how you work thru and solve them.

    You know, I'm currently studying to be a mechanical engineer and when I saw the finished product of this I legitimately thought "I could never make something like this. I can never be an engineer." but seeing the logic behind everything play out, it's not nearly as far off as I thought it might be, and it's really cool to learn about all this stuff now before I have to cram for an exam. Thank you for documenting these so thoroughly, it is so, so helpful. :)

    I don't do robotics, electronics, or cosplay of any kind, but your tenacity and ingenuity has been rather inspiring. I've not only started hand making knives (I just got a commission for a kukri!), but I've started building recurve bows and such. Not nearly as much engineering as you're doing here, but seeing you work out all the kinks and teaching yourself as you go is exactly what I needed to see to know that I could, too. Thanks!

    been watching you since you use to cast parts from resins. When you got the 3d printers this is exactly the stuff I was waiting for not just downloading stuff from Thingiverse but actually making an engineering your own prototypes. Loving the different versions of BB 8 and I'm loving that it's showing different ways to do one.

    I love the new build looks so much more like a professional robot.
    I used the same Lazy Susan bearing in a smaller size for my robot, but for my application it has way to much play. Now I'm locking for a better replacement.

    Have you thought of adding sped up 3d printing clips to the videos? Watching the lead stirring really made me wonder what it would be like to watch a full BB-8 part pop out of the printer at high speed!

    One thing you may not have thought of yet. If you try tilting the spinning flywheel *gyroscopic procession* will cause the tilting effect to be applied 90 degrees later (fore/aft).

    A potentiometer between the battery and whatever motor/servo you are testing would make for a good motor/servo checker with control of the power. I use a servo tester for rc planes and stuff, figured it may be a nice tool for you as well. Im loving version 3!

    If you want to turn a bit tighter on the go you should be able to combine the leaning with the flywheel to tighten it up. Should be simple have max lean at maybe 75% or so turning input and start feeding in flywheel control in past that?

    for a tighter turning radius, maybe spinning the fly wheel in addition to tilting it at the same time could work. . . or it could be a mess. Spinning a tilted flywheel (similiar to a helicopter blade) should result in a 90° shift to where it is tilted. . . so it probably wouldn't work.
    hmmm, I'm confused.

    Have you thought of using two opposing flywheels? That way you can torque in either direction quite quickly while still keeping gyroscopic stability on the tilt axis. Not sure if the added complexity would be worth it but thought i would ask.

      +James Bruton (XRobots) I was thinking two flywheels in the same plane. That way torque would only be applied when there is a difference in speeds. Even if the speeds were both zero, speeding one up would generate torque. When you want to stop the torque you would speed up the stopped one and slow down the faster one until they hit the same speed. That would at least double your torque accuracy and reaction time. Then you could decelerate them both at the same rate without applying any torque to BB8. If you needed a very high torque, you could rapidly decel one and rapidly accel the other.
      The spinning wheels, regardless of the speed, would also gyro stabilize the trousers axis. In BB8 v2, I would assume starting or stopping the flywheel would give you adverse yaw in other axis (specifically 90 degrees out of plane from where it was applied). A spinning flywheel (counter-rotation or otherwise) would give the trousers something to push off of.

    Have you thought about using a flywheel spinning constantly inside the ball to act as a gyro? I understand this is how the ISS stablises and much like a ball, that has nothing to "push" against either. It would hold the mechanicals within the ball level and allow the ball to be driven in all directions, not just one track. something for version 4 maybe? :D Love your projects!

    I wonder if it was really worth including the flywheel feature... It did the job but wasn't a great effect IMO, 'cause to turn on the spot you had to spin up the flywheel and then stop it. My inclination after version 2 would have been to focus strictly on turning while in motion. It does limit things a bit (can only drive forward or backward from a stop) but it's good enough to get it moving around, and the effect is good as long as you don't get it stuck somewhere.

    Could you use the flywheel and trousers tilting in tandem with the droid moving forwards/backwards to decrease the turning circle. i.e. implement some mixing on the transmitter which engages the flywheel if the droid is in motion and the trousers have reached their maximum tilt rather than turn on the spot or drive in a large arc?

    if the brackets are set higher than you predicted you could always reprint them to make up for the height difference just shorten them to fit the new height rather than make another part to fill in the gaps

    With the flywheel, what would happen if you had one section with more lead in it than the other 2? Side to side balance would be about the same, I assume, but the on the spot rotation would be slightly different. Any idea as to how much different it would be?

    Im sure you've thought of it, but id love to see a version that has full 2 directional movement inside the ball. Like with 4 wheels as contact points that can drive together to turn, or with opposites to drive in any direction (and lean by driving the wheels perpendicular to the current velocity). Alternatively, If this is not mechanically viable id love to hear why :D

    Maybe I've missed something, but could you explain why you used that inside axis and the big washers to hold together the inside chassis instead of just putting screw holes in the outer axis and screw it fixed? If I remember correctly the outer axis is stationery and the 'trousers' move on bearings.

    James what spec laptop/desktop are you using?
    I'm using the latest version of 123d Design and it's suprisingly sluggish, and yet I am on a fairly powerful i7/ssd laptop (bought for work at this spec, runs other 3d programs well etc. )
    Has 123d always been smooth for you? Ever come across lagging with any versions etc?

      +James Bruton (XRobots) above a certain RPM it would push 90 degrees like any gyroscope .. placing a significant weight on a course screw and winding it from one side to the other would better induce a lean .. since he'll need ballast.. he could use that if he needed more lean than the head will give.. 6kilos.. err.. WONT need a ballast
      .. edit.. oops.. wrong person.. lol .. replace "he" with "you" .. and "you" probably have a suitable piece already designed from your ultron project.. but no space left in version 3 to use it

    Instead of lifting up the two bridge pieces (used to connect the lazy Susan) up and filling up the gap, why not print another set of bridge with a smaller height?

    Thankyou for this great episode again.
    for some very strange unknown reason this video does not show up on my computer. not on the playlist, not on the "all uploaded" videos etc etc. It is that I checked my youtube with my ipad that I noticed the new episode. I then again checked with my pc but nope, nothing there anywhere. I then copied the https link from my ipad to the pc and the I could watch this video from my pc. very strange. I did switch off adblocker to be sure that was not blocking somehow. same result so it seems.

    I always feel weird when you don't print in the same colour as it's displayed in 123D

      It is also much more impressive when you see it with all the different colors. I think it would be cool if he made different parts in different colors. You wouldn't be able to see them when they're covered up, but would make the inside prettier

      +vinno97 I know nothing of 3D printing, but I can imagine that colored plastics are more expensive than grey neutral colors. It likely boils down to saving money, especially since this is just a personal project of his

      +Kenshi Mardon They can be slightly more expensive. I think mostly it's a matter of not having to swap filament out everytime he prints. You have to flush the hot end out so that there is no contamination between colors, etc.
