Didn't see any comments about it, but Necromunda has had a few references to Crystal Maze. Bald Bryen of Rust Town likes to put gangers through his "deadly dungeon extravaganza" and winners are awarded Chrono Crystals. It's mentioned a few times here and there in the books and there is even a white dwarf scenario to play (although it's a bit more killing each other than puzzles)
I dunno if it just because I'm drunk right now, but the fact that the TV show Fort Boyard, Rocky horror and GW has a tangential connection is absolutely mind blowing to me. It's like the Crystal maze is created solely for my weird interests😅
Fun fact: this wasn’t the first time Ed Tudor-Pole had followed in O’Brien’s footsteps, as prior to taking over TCM he also played Riff-Raff in a stage version of Rocky Horror 😂
As soon as I saw this title The Crystal Maze theme played in my head. Remember watching this as a youngster and loving it. As well as Knightmare....... "Oooohhhh Nasty". 😂
Did you ever get that thing, where you were excited to see what the next game was, and got really disappointed if it ended up baing a word puzzle insetad of a remote controlled moon-buggy? 'Cos I did.
Genuinely fascinating, the interweaving story of Crystal Maze and Fort Boyard was completely unknown to me - I always assume Fort Boyard was a ripoff of Crystal Maze. Great stuff Jordan
I’m a yank, but I spent a few years of my childhood in UK, and I agree; the Crystal Maze was such a formative and inspiring show. I definitely share your love, and enjoyed the video.
Awesome video, Jordan. It's always great to see others spread the word of The Crystal Maze. Many thanks for the shout out, too. I'm honoured. PS loved your "start the fans" bit at the end 😆😆😆 Edit:What a lovely cat you have too❤️❤️❤️
Thanks so much Phil, and thanks again for your wonderful contributions! I will let Martha know she has another fan (she is only in the YT game for the fame!)
Wow. Growing up in France in the 80-90s, I remember Fort Boyard, but I had totally forgotten about "la chasse au trésor" et "les mondes fantastiques" (which I have seen, early). It's so funny that a video about British television would bring reminiscences about French TV! Great as always
Nice history! I loved the original Crystal Maze but my childhood nostalgia is for the Adventure Game on BBC2 and the UK version of the Treasure Hunt on Ch4 in the early 80s. The latter generally seemed to involve rafts, made out of logs, blue barrels and rope, that fell apart halfway across some freezing lake in Scotland or the Lake District. The thing I remember most about the Adventure Game was the vortex puzzle at the end, which often ended the way of a Knightmare quest: “Go right! No left! aarrrrrgh….”
Marvellous work again! Fascinating how there are so many threads connecting these mighty titans of our childhoods - from Crystal Maze to Fighting Fantasy, 2000AD and Doctor Who. Your research is revealing some incredible gems!
The connections across the industry, especially back then, really are fascinating. There's a few more curios and oddities that I've got my eye on as well (alongside the 'bigger' stuff) so hopefully there'll be even more surprises down the line!
There was also a session with Andy, Jervis and me in an office in Enfield Chambers, one of my suggestions was the 'climbing up the spider's web without disturbing the spider' game due to my then acute arachnophobia...
There were always conflicting feelings when it was time for the Crystal dome - it was about to be the exciting finale, but it was also almost time for bed!
Fantastic work as always Jordan, you took me right back to my childhood. I loved the crystal maze, and you mentioned Red Dwarf, another show I loved and grew up watching. Keep up the good work 👍
Brilliant and fascinating. I loved CM, but only really watched it BECAUSE of Richard 'O'Brian, so when he left I did too. Did not know GW came up with the puzzles, but I do remember thinking, these seem very RPG like to me, so who knew?! Cheers for doing this. Love these deep dives in to the background of things I still cherish in my memories.
This is the true sorcery of your channel sir; the ability to engage me with something I have absolutely no connection to. Growing up in the US, I never heard of the Crystal Maze until I started catching random references to it from UK friends I'd met online or UK TH-camrs I'd watched who'd grown up with it. Even then I never really bothered to follow up. But as always you've thrown together an engaging and informative video and hooked me all the way through.
we only had fort boyard here on the tv at the time, but was one of my favorite shows, i loved the feeling of the D&D on that show. Now i know where that all come from, once again great video....oh and some of the puzzles included those famous vermins...well at least the litle ones...not the warp stone infuse ones...
Had similar feeling when learned Battletech and Mechwarrior are same thing essentially. Had zero clue about table top etc as a kid or any of that history but I watched a certain cartoon, and loved a certain tiger paint Axmen toy, not to mention the first games ever played were Mechwarrior as a wee little kid on DOS. Only few years ago did I find out that they’re same thing, still play Mechwarrior to this day, so was pretty neat to find out. Like always been with me or w/e lol
Hi Jordan… The French Treasure show was like the British TV show called Treasure Hunt… Annika Rice then someone else in later years had to travel round the UK looking for clues. Two members of the public had to solve clues and get Annika known as the Sky Runner had to go around in a Helicopter.. not sure if you knew of this show but I watched it in the 1980’s
I'm a bit surprised the daddy of all these didn't get a mention: The Adventure Game. But you might be a bit too young to have seen that. Again, it was like a bunch of escape rooms, with puzzles to solve and characters to interact with. There was also Now Get Out Of That from the same era, but nobody seems to remember that. I get the feeling that the main reason Games Workshop were involved, was that they are called Games Workshop. Maybe someone in the office was looking for outside assistance in designing games and it seemed like the name of a company who might (duh) design and make games. Never mind that they were a totally different sort of game!
I think you’re dead right - like when MB called GW about playing pieces I can imagine someone at Chatsworth just checking out the Yellow Pages for games designers! And you’re quite right, The Adventure Game preceded Crystal Maze AND me, but looking at it now there definitely seems to be influence from it!
It's weird about Games Workshop as you say - that they worked on something I enjoyed before even knowing who they were. It's kind of like when I found out that the writer behind Babylon 5 had previously worked on the cartoons He-man, Jace & the Wheeled Warriors and The Real Ghostbusters - basically all the cartoons I really got into as a kid in the 80's. Or Russell T Davies writing the Dr Who revival in 2005, but I'd first encountered his work all the way back when he was writing for Children's Ward. Or most recently, and quite a bit.later, that the guy behind Black Mirror co wrote Brass Eye. I guess up to a certain age I was just oblivious to writers and behind the scenes production news. I just watched thing's I enjoyed watching and didn't think about it. But it does make me wonder who was behind some other shows I enjoyed growing up, and whether it might be worth looking up what they've been up to the last 20-30 years since. Also raises questions about whether the writers just have a way of connecting to me, or if actually they've somehow imprinted themselves on me because I was exposed to their work at a young age, so I now associate the way they write with "good writing" (or is it just nostalgia - an echo in their style that reminds me subconsciously of my youth?). Gets quite existential - are my tastes really my own, or am I just a product that certain people have primed early on in order to fund their future careers? Like a sleeper agent.
I'm old enough to remember 'The Adventure Game' on BBC2. Before I watch, I'm willing to bet it gets a mention at the very least! EDIT: No mention, but The 'Adventure Game' and 'The Krypton Factor' always felt like progenitors to 'The Crystal Maze' to me.
The Adventure Game slipped past me, but now I think you are quite right about it and Krypton Factor being early influences! Even if the Crystal Maze creators didn’t make the connection
Cool video, Jordan. So, I'm playing the PC version of Warhammer Quest, and one of the most powerful spells that the enemy units can cast is, you guessed it, "Crystal Maze", which teleports one of your heroes off the map entirely for a whole turn. Not all that bad you'd say, right? Except that if you kill the dark magic user that cast it before your hero is zapped back into the dungeon, that hero will die, forever lost in the crystal maze. (Which is made more frustrating when your heroes have to surround said necromancer instead of killing him, so as not to lose Hero McHeroson to the maze, allowing the necro to resurrect minions and potentially keep up the Crystal Maze cycle on another hero if he has enough power points, prolonging his inevitable demise.) I seriously started your video here thinking there was a Warhammer fantasy origin myth to the crystal maze and the spell, but was pleasantly surprised to learn about the UK show of the same name instead. I assume the Crystal Maze spell card exists on the tabletop version of Warhammer Quest. I haven't played the tabletop much (I was more a HeroQuest player and then skipped over to WH40K and Mordheim.) Is there a crystal maze card anywhere in Talisman? Warhammer Fantasy Battles? A spell in WH Fantasy roleplay?

Looks like the modern version came to Aus at least. Great video regardless!!
Cheers Waffle! It's a shame the classic show didn't make it to Aus, it was such good fun! I don't know if they're region locked, but the Crystal Maze channel on YT actually has a load of original episodes for free online if you do fancy giving them a go
When Robin Hood Prince of Thieves appeared I said to myself 'even in a JS video not about GW it still comes back to Nottingham'... then BAM Games Workshop turns up like Stone Cold Steve Austin interrupting a match on WWE 😄 Does this mean that Richard O'Brian's persona in The Crystal Maze may well have been a hidden Tzeentch lord all along?

Agreed, almost makes you wonder if they only really had one mystery per zone!
Richard O'Brien is a bit of a legend. He lives here in NZ now after we cajoled the government to give him citizenship ❤ He also grew up here.
Pleased to hear it, such a legend deserves to love in such a beautiful country!
